Prior to the interactive orals, I had little information on Colombian culture and was unaware of the role it serves throughout Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Although I was aware of the ill treatment of women in Colombian communities, I was unaware of significant cultural values. The interactive oral I participated in spoke to important cultural context, defining the Colombian village in the novel as one that is not distinctly patriarchal yet has strong male dominance.
The novel largely surrounds the idea of machismo gender roles, which defines men as excessively masculine and controlling. Consider Prudencia Cortes, who states, “I never would have married him if he hadn’t done what a man should do” (62). This emphasizes how valued gender roles

Knowledge is the information in which we perceive to be the truth of the world around us. However, all knowledge is susceptible to change depending of the bias of the character. Gabriel García Márquez demonstrates this issue in the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by exploiting the understanding of knowledge through fabula and syuzhet.
Chronicle of a Death Foretold Reflective Statement In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s journalistic narrative, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, he takes on a unique style of writing to outline the social norm in the Columbium society. The discussions in class allowed me to see the roles of gender and magical realism in the story. The women in the novel are usually trained to be a perfect wife, and are expected to remain a virgin until marriage. They are the inferior gender in the Colombian society, while the men on the other hand are supposed to have a lot of “machismo.”
Throughout the course of the novel Chronicles of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia discusses the conflicting feelings of traditions and human nature amongst a small community when a man is murdered in the name of honor. The differing experiences each person had with the death of Santiago Nasar as well as their opinions on whether he deserved to die by the hands of the Vicario brothers, not only shows their contrasting emotions towards honor and human decency but also the effects of staying silent. The novel chose to incorporate not only the conflict amongst their community also shows the effects that this traditional society had on their values, beliefs and gender roles, that is constantly expressed by the people vocally and their actions as well.

In Chronicle of a Death Foretold Gabriel García Márquez depicts the gender roles within Colombian society as deeply rooted in the mentality of Machismo culture to shed light on social inequalities. The depiction female characters Marquez’s novella offers a deeper comprehension of the diverse methods by which patriarchy is established within the Latin American culture. Marquez reveals not only the degree to which women’s internalization of this system or their mistreatment and abuse within this imbalanced male hierarchy, but also the assortment and multiplicity of resentment and opposition to female exploitation.

Set in a small Colombian coastal town, 1950's, “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” is a fictional novel organized into five chapters, 120 pages in all. Written in first person with an unnamed narrator, it tells the story of Santiago Nasar and Angela Vicario, and the events leading up to Santiago's unfortunate death. Gabriel García Márquez, the author, includes a healthy amount of mystery and satire to get the reader intrigued.
(52). A man’s given gender role at this time was to provide and protect his family using any means necessary. The Vicario brothers did not want to kill Santiago Nasar, they pranced around declaring it to everyone hoping they’d get stopped. However, it was what was expected of them, what they were supposed to do, and so they did just that and their lives were made a living hell because of it. Overall, gender roles don’t have a very positive effect on either men or women as, usually, it forces people to do and become things the really have intention of even
In the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, multiple themes are brought to the table to shed some light on the tragedy that occurred in this small town in the novel. These themes, like social class, construct these personas that become the cultural norms that the citizens of this town seem to follow. The citizens’ ideas of social class have constructed the pyramid of power. People like Santiago Nasar and Bayardo San Román are on the top of the pyramid while the Vicario family and others are on the bottom. When these classes’ lives intertwine with each other, the higher up class usually finishes on top. Certain preconceptions and expectations are given to each class, and they are unchanging. The differences in
In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the way women have been represented and characterized gives us an idea of how the female gender are treated differently from the male gender as well as children in Latin America during the 1950s. The husbands were given all the authority, also known as machismo, whereas women weren’t allowed to take charge of anything, and were portrayed as weak and impotent.
Furthermore Colombian culture in a Chronicle of a Death Foretold focuses mainly on the strength of family relationships, gender roles, and honor. Gender roles
As a woman, Angela Vicario is the epitome of a traditional Colombian woman. A traditional Colombian woman is expected to be virgins when they get married; but Vicario defys this social custom causing Vicario to get “softly pushed his wife into [her house] without speaking,” (46). These details emphasize the idea that women are given different standards than men. The details help highlight Marquez’s criticism of how the traditional Colombian woman is treated as and thought of as. From a very young age Vicario and her sisters were taught “how to do screen embroidery, sew by machine, weave bone lace, wash and iron, make artificial flowers and fancy candy, and write engagement announcements,” (31). These skills were taught to better prepare the girls for marriage; displaying the difference in gender roles. Marquez uses parallel structure to emphasize the amount of skills one has to learn before they can be considered as good and pure. Many years after Bayardo San Román returns Vicario she still does “machine embroidery with her friends just as before she had made cloth tulips and paper birds, but when her mother went to bed she would stay in her room until dawn writing letters with no future,” (93). The diction of the words “no future” and “still” suggest that Vicario’s life is stuck in
