This song by Christina Perri really connects to Speak because it talks about internal depression and that how everyone has their limits and breaking points. It talks about being someone else inorder to please another person. Melinda states that she is a good actor, because she has a "whole range of smiles." She says "I use the shy, look-up-through-the-bangs smile for staff members, and the crinkly-eye smile with a quick shake of my head if a teacher asks me for an answer. If my parents want to know how school went, I flash my eye-brows upward and shrug my shoulders" (30). This relates to the song this quote shows that Melinda has faked emotions, and pretends to be someone shes not, so that she can be normal. Another quote is when, when Andy
Again, throughout the whole book, Melinda has this odd feeling, she thinks that nobody likes her and is always down on herself. An example from the book that shows this behavior is at the beginning of the book, her first day of high school. "I have entered high school with the wrong hair, the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude. And I don't have anyone to sit with. I am outcast." (Anderson 4) As soon as she enters high school she doubts herself. It's almost as that she believes that since she has entered with the wrong clothes, the wrong hair, and nobody to sit with, that she will never fit in. This shows a sign of hopelessness, she is doubting herself to much. Another example of when Melinda shows sadness and hopelessness is when she hears about Rachelles Halloween party she is throwing. She says, "I knew I wouldn't get an invitation. I would be lucky to get an invitation to my own funeral." (Anderson 41) This shows Melinda again, being
Melinda’s encounter with Andy Evans has let her to question herself and not trust her own
Towards the end of the year, there is a clear change in Melinda and she is confident of herself. When Andy tries to attack her again she says “NNNOOO!!!"(188) This shows how much she has grown because she decides not to be a silent victim anymore. Now she is a “definitely breathing”(197) tree. She came up struggling and feeling alone by herself, but she knew that she made a lot of progress from the start.
(Anderson 84) Melinda is blocking out her true feelings with her “humor” and sarcasm by judging her english teacher. She is also putting others down to make herself feel better about what’s going on in her life. Lastly, you most commonly find Melinda using sarcasm to mask her insecurities with herself. Melinda lost all of her friends within one year, so entering high school alone has caused her to have a lot of insecurities.
Melinda starts this story as a girl who would never speak in class, hide her face in the crowd, and never wanted to be noticed. However she transforms into a person who is not afraid to speak her mind, and doesn’t think of what people will think of what she
Her attitude is pessimistic and she focuses on her negative attributes. I think many adolescents can relate to Melinda’s internal conflict. This is because students are afraid of how their peers will judge them. Unfortunately, this paranoia can result to one becoming antagonistic towards high school and feel like an, “Outcast” just like Melinda.
This quote near the beginning of the book is in the context of Melinda describing her room. She says this because of how it is decorated very strangely. The way she words her sentence implies that she doesn’t know who she was when she was younger, that she is “alien”. Because of this and the fact she has no friends, she can’t relate to anyone, not even her past self. This causes her to be pushed deeper into her depression.
Andy stripped her of any emotional power, and without power she really couldn’t control anything, she didn’t care about anything else and let the fear of her attacker consume her. Towards the end of the novel Melinda starts to regain some of that power, in the novel she states, “I want to insert the glass all the way through his throat, I want to hear him scream. I look up. I see the stubble on his chin, a fleck of white in the corner of his mouth. His lips are paralyzed.
This quote shows us how Melinda is now liberated and free from the shackles of silence that were holding her back. Melinda is now fully able to tell others about her traumatic experience and this signifies that she has fully moved on. Melinda used to not even be able to tell her parents or best friends what happened and this moment signifies that she has accepted what happened and that she is now ready to talk about it after speaking up. All of this shows how much Melinda has grown after speaking up about her
My playlist is reflecting an odd relationship that I have with my step-dad that really made a 180 degree turn after a specific event happened that I do not wish to go into detail about. I first chose the song “Dollhouse” by Melanie Martinez because that song talks about a family looking perfect on the outside but then when you look within it’s rather dysfunctional and that is exactly how my family is. Only a small handful of people know what my family is really like and that’s because when we’re out in public we act as if we are all happy together and everything is fine, but that just isn’t the case. I think this song is a perfect opening to my playlist for the reason that it begins to tell you that not everything about my family is what it seems to be. I then chose “Open Wounds” by Skillet and to be honest, I have never heard of this song before but I thought the lyrics were relevant to my story. In the song they say, “tell me why you broke me down and betrayed my trust in you” and this lyric stuck out to me the most. When you’re growing up your parents are supposed to be supportive and they’re supposed to build you up, whereas with my step-dad, it was pretty much the opposite of that. I felt like I couldn’t trust him with anything, let alone talk to him about something. It had gotten to the point where I would just do my best to avoid talking to him completely and because of that, I would turn to my mom for everything and this made it hard for me, both then and now, to
These lyrics mean that he was hiding his true self and that he kept denying that it was his fault that everything happened to him. Melinda undergoes a transformative journey, strengthening and empowering her as she finds her voice. Melinda has built character and the courage to fight back and say no to things she doesn’t want. Andy Evans has made her a better version of herself. When Andy is about to rape Melinda for the second time, she stands up for herself, “No.
Melinda had a “Coming of Age” but it wasn’t a good change. It’s something that will always haunt her. Melinda usually kept to herself and let people continuously hurt her. But finally she stuck up for herself in Mr. Neck’s classroom with the paper report (Even if it got her in trouble). Melinda also stuck up for herself when Heather tried taking they're friendship for granted and basically told Heather to leave her alone because she didn’t care about anyone or anything besides herself.

Bipolar disorder (BD), or manic depression, is one of the oldest mental illnesses, first being documented in 1st Century Greece by Aretaeus of Cappadocia. He first noted the link between mania and depression that is so characteristic of the disease. As the years progressed the disease changed names from “mania” and “melancholia” during Ancient Greece and Rome, to “manico-melancolicus” in the 17th century, “lafolie circulaire” in 1851, and now, finally, “bipolar” as defined by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1980. Bipolar disorder affects 2.3 million Americans, or 1.2% of the population (Gambaccini, 2012). It is equally represented in men and women and among all races,
The song "U.N.I.T.Y." by Queen Latifah, released in 1994, is a hip-hop song with a theme about the harassment, domestic violence and sexist slurs against women, black woman to be specific. Should “U.N.I.T.Y” be considered literature, specifically is it a poem? I think that every song, no matter what the genre is free verse poetry. However, this artist and song are important in the hip-hop as literature genre movement because of both the artist’s credibility and the message that she is delivering.
