Presents the truth of the Christian worldview Boxers & Saints is a piece of good Christian art because it presents truth through a Christian worldview. Throughout the graphic novels are examples of both inclusive and exclusive Christian truth. With inclusively Christian truth, displays themes such as in the novels are love of family and compassion is better than hate and war. The panels of red stained dirt, lifeless bodies, and staring vacant eyes portray the reality and devastation of war (Yang “Boxers” 230). Even at the end of Boxers there is no result that justifies the countless lives that were taken. Threaded quietly throughout the novels, compassion appears as a peace keeper and friend in the panels. Mei-wen shows compassion for injured secondary devils and tries to heal them as they bleed from the wounds inflicted by the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists (Yang “Boxers” 301). In Saints, Vibiana is given compassion by Father Bey after she comes to him, face beaten and bruised fro being a Christian, and he takes her with him during his travels so she does not have to return to her family (Yang “Saints” 70,77). This compassion that Vibiana is given, she later gives to Bao right before he kills her, she teaches him to pray which saves his life in the end (Yang “Saints”
Within literature, Compassion has been described in many ways though very few descriptions have agreed on how it is best identified (Volpintesta 2011). Crowther et al (2013) describe compassion as a deep emotion that is felt by the individual practitioner allowing them to understand what the patient may be experiencing. Nussbaum (2003) argues that compassion goes beyond just understanding and identifying that emotion, it requires the practitioner to produce a response to the feeling or emotion in order to improve the situation. Dewar (2011) points out that compassion is not only about the recognition of the patients suffering but includes small
Compassion has little to no boundries. In almost every great story there is a specific character or a group of characters that help the protagonist because they feel bad for them. Compassion is the most important aspect of a functioning society; therefore, Elie Wiesel’s Night, 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose, and the generosity of spirit shown by the average citizen after the recent shooting in Las Vegas are all perfect examples.
Boxing, an official sanctioned sport in the early 20th century, is a sport that is known as one of the most violent and physically demanding sports on the earth. Professional boxers that get paid to fight must be in top shape in order to preform at the highest level. Being a professional boxer is a tough life. Boxers train hard for many months leading up to one fight and either win, lose, knock out the opponent or even get knocked out. The sport has been around for centuries, but has most recently taken off over the last 100 years. It is a multibillion dollar industry with fighters taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars if not even millions of dollars for big matches. In his novel Papa Jack, Roberts tells the story of the famous African American boxer Jack Johnson. He details the boxers rise to fame and fortune and his downward spiral that would soon follow. In Papa Jack, Roberts displays life of a professional boxer through firsthand accounts with events that happened during Johnson’s life and shows how boxing not only influenced his life but also how he influenced the African American community.
Ultimately, as the story progresses, Bao is negatively influenced by his inner conscious, Ch’in Shih-huan; hence, by the end of the book, his personality drastically changes and he begins to lack compassion and is no longer worthy of justice. This is evident when he burns down a Christian mission and ruthlessly annihilates everyone inside, even though he is aware that “they’re all women and children” (Boxers 249). Bao sets fire to the mission in response to Ch’in’s heavy influence; however, his decision is unjust as he is greatly deprived of compassion and completely abandons his edicts. Bao subsequently sets a library ablaze in order to defeat the Christians, and with it he destroys all that he has fought for. He defends himself in saying, “I did it for China” (Boxers 312), but it is too late as Mei-Wen has already run into the burning building “to try to save some of those books” (Boxers 312). Under the complete control of Ch’in, Bao ignites his country’s historic stories, betrays his promise to Mei-Wen, and causes her death in the process. His unjustified behavior is displayed through his insensitivity in this instance; however, one of the most significant acts of injustice befalls when Bao kills Vibiana. Unmistakably, he does not wish
In novels and stories, it is an especially important emotion. Compassion shown by and to characters improves the general opinion of the characters and of the story from the reader because it allows the reader to connect with the novel. In Year of wonders, The Secret Life of Bees and The Hunger Games, this is especially evident as they show compassion on extremely difficult situations. Anna changes the life of a young orphan during an outbreak of the Plague. August Boatwright allows Lily and Rosaleen, two runaways, into her home, where they heal and find happiness.
Scouts Lessons in Compassion Compassion is a distinguishing quality. Associated with maturity and kindness, compassion is an emotional understanding or empathy for others that governs kind actions and citizenship. Throughout literacy, compassion resonates as a valuable lesson and skill for characters to learn because of its importance in a kind, functional society. Harper Lee uses compassion as a topic in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The childhood experience recounted in the novel help the protagonist, Jean Louise Finch, to grow compassionate through the teaching of important life lessons about injustice, empathy, and prejudice.
Brueggemann writes that Jesus’ compassion is not a simple emotional reaction, but it is a public criticism of society. Jesus challenged the imperial consciousness and demanded more from society through his teachings and parables. Compassion knows that hurt and injustice are not acceptable for a society and should not be viewed as social norms. However, ancient empires weren't built by compassionate rulers, they were set up and built on inequality and the maltreatment of certain people. As a contrast, Jesus and the alternative consciousness embodied grace and empathy as a basis for society, which Brueggemann believes to be a strength that allowed him to bring radical transformation during and after his time. The power to grieve the death of
“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal”. This quote by Steve Maraboli may be hard to understand, but the Holocaust texts: Night by Elie Wiesel, “A Three Year Old Saves His Mother” by Peter Gorog and “Jakob's Story” by Jakob Blankitny are great examples of where compassion is necessary to fight the despair in heartbreaking situations. In each work, compassion shows up from unexpected sources, helps motivate people to survive, and creates greater unification.
The author gives humanistic reasons on why people are compassionate. For example, a poor man was in the way of a mother and her baby so the mother scrambled around her purse to find change to give him. After the money was given to him, he stood there not knowing that taking the money and saying thank you was the end of that situation so he just stares at the baby, until the mother gets impatient and scrolls away. “Was it fear or compassion that motivated the gift?” In the passage she explains to the audience of a fresh bread shop and an old man. In the first chapter of “Christianity Rediscovered” by Vincent J. Donovan he is introducing us to the idea that missionaries now have a poor reputation due to their history. He says “History has offered the opportunity to deflect and distort the meaning of missionary work in every age”. For a long time a missionary was a person spreading the word of God and after years of doing so we have diminished many different beliefs, practices, cultures and history. At the time it was thought to be the right thing, to spread out and share the gospel to help people find meaning and acceptance. In today’s age a missionary is a lot of different things, in many cases it is more focused on the health and physical wellbeing of the people. Many people still share the gospel through missionary work, but in other cases it is more of a material aid. Donovan introduces the book as a voyage of discovery he wants us to put our normal beliefs aside to see his perspective of living a missionaries life and struggling with the fact of if you are helping or hurting.
Although people who know me might picture me being in Ravenclaw, but Hufflepuff is actually the right house for me. I was sorted into the house Hufflepuff because the house characteristics suits my personality in many ways. I am kind, patient, hardworking and clever. I agree with the Sorting Hat that Hufflepuff is the right house for me.

Compassion is a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune. Ascher appeals to pathos in her essay in order to compel the readers to feel compassion towards the victims. She contributes to pathos in her quote, “The man’s grin is less the result of circumstance than dreams or madness” (46). The audience feels for this young man and the tough “circumstances” he is going through. The man is dressed so poorly that he is being mistaken as a mad man by the spectators. The readers instantly feel empathy for this man in the form of compassion. Ascher appeals to logos in order to define compassion in her quote, “For the ancient Greeks, drama taught and reinforced compassion within a society” (48). Ascher includes the real facts about the Greeks in her essay. When she includes these facts, it enables the readers to validate that compassion is something that is taught, whether it is through plays or having to see someone in a worse condition than they are, compassion is still attained.
Christianity is one of the most influential religions on both ancient and modern Western society, with the religion based on the teachings of the prophet Jesus Christ who lived approximately between the years of 5 BC and 33 AD. It is claimed that Christ was the son of God whose spirit was embodied and sent to Earth as a human being to bring peace and prosperity to the less fortunate, and absolve the world of its sin. Jesus preached a doctrine of a supreme monotheistic god who ruled over the universe, as well as ethics and morals especially centred on the concept of faith and forgiveness. If one was to live their life in accordance to the Will of God and the teachings of Christ found in the written word of the Holy Bible, one would be absolved of their sin and ascend to the spiritual realm of God, known as Heaven, after their physical death.
