Community is a word derived mainly from old French and Latin. Each of these languages and groups had different principles and ideas for what community mean. The word comunete comes from old French meaning thoughts about the wonder of communing with others. The word Communitas is derived from Latin meaning the spirit of being together. I still feel as though community is so much deeper then these two definitions. Community in my opinion means a group of people who unite together to be friendly, spirited and achieve the same goal. These people generally have characteristics in common. A Christian community is slightly different; it is a group of people who are willing to accept others and teach them more about Jesus and God. They act and a kind and pleasant manner obeying the ten commandments. Some communities that I belong to and are accepted in are: …show more content…
I am involved in this community because I am passionate about football and how it requires teamwork and cooperation to win. I contribute to the club by having an open mind and being positive, even when things may not be going our way on the field. A value that I have learnt through football is that persistence and teamwork overpower talent and laziness. This value helps me to strive to become the best person I can be by motivating myself to try my best at everything. I participate in the team by showing up to training and games every week and putting in my best effort. In my team last year, all 22 players belonged and felt accepted within the team which was the recipe for success as we finished 1st on the leaderboard. The club means a great deal to me, every time I walk out to play, I am walking out with 21 of my best mates. The people who really stand out to me as key members of the team are the coaching staff and the team physiotherapist. I chose these members because they do a lot off the field to ensure the team has fun when we are playing and
A community is a place where people around supposed to be able to live and thrive together. When one thinks of a community, the image that most likely is visualized is one of a place where each person lives harmoniously with all the other members of that community. While this may be the typical image of a community, it is not the realistic view. In reality communities can share both good and bad aspects. In Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-First Century Peter Dreier, John Mollenkopf, and Todd Swanstrom make the argument that the place a person lives ultimately matters over all else; the place which a person lives effects the choices that that he/she makes and determines his/her ability to obtain a
What is a Christian community? This is a question I didn't know the answer to until last summer. I was living a life of disobeying one of God's commands and had no idea. Even though I am a sinful person and I sin everyday and have struggles just like everyone else. I was very confused, but I am glad my eyes were open to what the community is and how important it is in daily life as a follower of Christ. My eyes were open when I went to a teen leadership conference at Summit University in Pennsylvania. My faith plays a big role in my life, but one thing specifically, I have been challenged in my faith is community. Learning about community opened my eye to something I haven't been doing, but know it has formed me into a stronger believer in
According to Stanhope and Lancaster (2008) defines a community as: “A social group determined by geographic boundaries and/or common values and interests. Its members know and interact with one another. It functions within a particular social structure and exhibits and creates norms, values, and social institutions” (World Health Organization [WHO], 1974, pg. 7).
The best way to define a community will never be clear. You have your own feelings on communities and our thoughts on it will always be different from everyone else's. Everyone has a different perspective on communities, it is endless. All of the definitions relate to what I think about a community. Community to me means “home”. A community is where I have grown up and learned important life lessons. The things that matter most to me in my community are my family, my
A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).
To me, community is a group of people working, living and being in the same local area or place. The idea of a community as virtual would mean to include a community of people sharing social and common interests, ideas and goals (perhaps) via a social network. What it means for our society is that communities are connected virtual throughout society.
What does Christian community really mean? Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community by Dietrich Bonhoeffer gives insight into what Christians relationships were designed to be like. The main theme Bonhoeffer explores is Christ in the Christian community under the Word of God. Bonhoeffer explains God’s gift of community by arguing the following: “It is grace, nothing but grace, that we are allowed to live in community with Christian brethren” (Bonhoeffer, 1978, p. 20). In addition the author adds, “Christian community is like the Christian’s sanctification. It is a gift of God, which we cannot claim. Only God knows the real state of our fellowship, of our sanctification” (p. 30). Overall Life Together is biblically
Living in community will expose selfishness, ambition, jealousy, dissension and impurity in ourselves, allowing us to experience loss, despair, and stress. Even so, all of this is important to our spiritual formation because we mature as Christians,
Community is when people come together as one for a common good or goal. I give back to the community because I think I my success are not all because of my ability. I have the people who helped me and taught me lesson in life that help me reach my success today. I have given back to the community by volunteering on Sundays to teach confirmation. Teaching on sunday gives me a chance to know my parish better and also teach the students more about their faith. I think it is very important to have bond with those who you go to church with. This summer I
A community is a group of people that share a common or similar characteristic with each other. Some communities can also consist of people living together or practice worship. My essay will include the communities that I am part of which are my dance, school and church communities.
The definition of community when I google it, is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would describe community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests.
The definition provided in The American College Dictionary from 1964 says “a group of men or women leading a common life according to a rule.” I never really viewed community in this manner. Many of us think of the word “community” as a group of people who live near each other. We forget that a community is actually just a group of people with common interests or characteristics who often happen to live near each other. Communities can be bound by race, religion, economic standings, political standings, and most commonly, location. Frequently, communities fall into more than one of these categories.
A community is established when more than two people share the same values and through time this personal connection evolves into a fellowship governed by rituals, traditions, and a particular form of communication that when taken together makes a group of individuals whether living in a specific geographical area or connected by ideals so distinct that their distinguishing marks allow them to stand out from among the crowd. They do not just believe in something like an organization but they need each other to survive and thrive. A good example is the Old Order Amish Mennonite community wherein the community serves as source of identity, strength and provides the reason why they should sustain the community’s way of life.
Throughout my life, I have been privileged to know a strong sense of community. My understanding of community has been carved out and shaped by each community that I have been a part of and the subsequent life experiences that I have had by being a part of these communities. To me, community means a sense of belonging with people who have some capacity of like-mindedness. When you belong to a community, you feel like a piece of a larger puzzle that comes together to create a whole. Each community you belong to both influences you, and is influenced by you. Moreover, your belonging to a community generates a sense of unity and shares a common goal, value, or outlook.
The term community is a more than geographic boundaries. It is a group of people
