A hero to me is an individual who selflessly sacrifices, frequently endangering their own life, for the benefit of others. Chris McCandless's actions and the resulting societal impact do not merit the designation of heroism. Some would agree that he had lots of courage and was brave, therefore making him a hero, but despite his braveness and courage, his emotional state led him to abandon everything and die. In the novel Into the Wild, Chris McCandless expressed how quickly he disappeared, Chris mailed his parents a copy of his final grade report...it was the last anyone in Chris s family would have ever heard of him ( Krakauer) This reveals that he had a plan to send his parents his grades so they would no worry about him, hence making him selfish. It isn't appropriate to label Chris McCandless as a hero, as his actions resulted in more negative implications than positive ones. An article, talks about how Chris’s parents were affected, “his parents fell into a pit of sorrow and regret. Their son was dead and they would never be able to speak to or see him again”( Spareberry, 2007). This expresses that Chris …show more content…

The day is unlike any other. The mail has come and lying at the bottom of the stack is the favored Outside magazine. The headline reads, “Exclusive Report: Lost in the Wild.” The cover speaks of a twenty four year old boy who “walked off into America’s Last Frontier hoping to make sense of his life.” The monotony of the ordinary day has now vanished from thought as Jon Krakauer’s captivating article runs through the mind like gasoline to an engine. The article is not soon forgotten, and the book Into the Wild is happened upon three years later. The book relates the full story of Christopher Johnson McCandless and how he left his family and friends after graduating college in order to find himself. Krakauer based the book off of his article

“Into the Wild”, a novel written by Jon Krakauer, focuses on the adventures of Chris McCandless, a young man who set out on a journey to be far as possible away from civilization. Many individuals have multiple contemplations on McCandless’s lifestyle and behavioral actions. Although numerous of people criticized McCandless as a “nutcase,” a “sociopath,” or an “outcast,” Krakauer saw something more in McCandless. Krakauer identified McCandless as an adventurous soul who, in my opinion, should be admired for his passion for nature and pursuit to find the truth.

Jon Krakauer’s odyssey Into the Wild follows Christopher McCandless through his last year of his life traversing the North American frontier. As a biography based on McCandless’ journals and interviews, much of the details of Chris’ journeys are speculated. Yet, Krakauer succeeds in developing the enigma of Christopher McCandless, or as he would be immortalized in the bus on the Stampede Trail, Alexander Supertramp, in a way that tugs at the buried wanderer inside of everyone.
Into the wild is a thought provoking book, that later adapted to film, written by Jon Krakauer in 1996; The book is based on the story of Christopher McCandless, a strong willed young man that leaves his life in the suburb after college to go to a trip to Alaska in a search for himself.
Christopher McCandless was an adventurer no doubt. He spent the last few years of his life living purely off the land and exploring, doing what he felt called to do. However, to venture off on such an intense, dangerous, and wild journey, a person most likely has some deeply thought out reason as to why he or she is embarking on the mission. Chris himself seems to have had some reasons, besides his curiosity, as to why he explored. However, he made a decision to leave without truly thinking about just how dangerous his journey was going to be. Due to his rash actions, Chris eventually died in an abandoned bus out in the wild. Now, some folks today think that Chris was a hero for doing what interested him and for doing his own thing without worrying about the trivial things in life. However, I have reason to believe that Chris was indeed not a hero. Instead, I believe that Chris McCandless’s journey into the wild was rash, ludicrous and foolish.
“Rather than love, than money, than frame, give me truth” (Krakauer 117). The book, Into the Wild, by John Krakauer was a nonfiction, biography about a young man named Christopher Johnson McCandless’s journey through the wild he worked with, while John Krakauer is telling his life and unraveling the details to larger mystery. Chris McCandless wanted to be free from his life to live in the wild which guided his adventure, his life, throughout his time through his actions/personal experiences, while the essential to Chris McCandless was found through his thoughts/feelings.
Into the Wild happens to be my favorite book, and also one of my favorite movies. Most people like one or the other, but I think the two complement each other because of the varied stances taken on the main character himself. In case you’re not familiar, Into the Wild is based on the true story of Chris McCandless who, after graduating with honors from Emory University in 1990, gave his entire savings of twenty-four thousand dollars to charity and set off following his dream of living off the land in the Alaskan wilderness. McCandless made it to Alaska, but died shortly after taking residence in an abandoned bus; he probably passed from eating the wrong deadly plant or possibly from starvation. The book was
Into the Wild points out the significance of self-exploration and authenticity. McCandless’s journey shows the value of following your true interests and beliefs. McCandless finds peace in the Alaskan wilderness by ignoring material things and social rules. He finds meaning in surviving off the land. Using this lesson in my life means accepting my personality and chasing my passions, rather than trying to “fit in” with
Throughout the non-fictional novel Into the Wild, the author Jon Krakauer catches the reader’s interest early on in the book. Krakauer takes us on a journey, telling the story of young Chris McCandless’ adventures after abandoning everything he owned. Krakauer fully emerged himself into the study of McCandless’ life’s adventures and soon developed a deep understanding of who he was and how he impacted to world. Krakauer connected with McCandless in an unexplainable way. Because of Krakauer’s past endeavors, he was able to capture the mentality of McCandless’ choices and write about them in a speaker and subject dynamic. As the novel progresses, the reader gets the sense of a unique brotherhood between the two, although they had never actually encountered one another. As Krakauer and McCandless’ “friendship” progresses, the reader will gain affection towards McCandless.
Into the Wild is the story of Chris McCandless’ journey across America and eventually his death in Fairbanks, Alaska. Krakauer weaves the story of McCandless with accounts of other survivalists that are similar to McCandless along with his own experiences.
Heroes cannot be simply defined in a few words; being a hero is not being perfect, it is holding some specific, heroic qualities that people can look up to. Especially in the case of Chris McCandless, one must understand that he was a real person, a person that possessed certain negative aspects of human nature; he is not a figure in a fictional piece of work that can be sculpted to the idea of a hero. Using this definition of a hero, Chris McCandless does in fact, embody the idea of a hero as someone to be admired to a certain extent; he is a figure that has shown noble qualities and strength through adversity.
Sean Penn’s film ‘Into the Wild’ tracks the journey of Christopher McCandlees as he escapes the oppressing entrapments of the modern world and the grief of his parent’s abusive and apathetic relationship to ultimately find his true being: “The climactic battle to kill the false being within…No longer to be poisoned by civilisation he flees.” The slow motion tracking shots and wind angle vistas of Chris in the wilderness creates a sense of liberation and enlightenment from his entrapments. Ironically, as Chris’ supplies become scarce he discovers that he has become trapped by the wilds harsh and uncaring nature, like the modern world: “Day 100! Made it, but in weakest condition of life…literally become trapped in the wild.” Moments before Chris’
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell Quotes). Heroes impact other people’s lives by contributing to a cause that makes a positive change in the world. To me, a hero is somebody who believes in a significant cause, dedicates his entire life to improving the cause, and changes the world for the better. Heroism today can be found all over the world and in all different forms. It could be as small as standing up for a victim of bullying, voicing your opinions for an important cause, or helping someone in a dangerous situation. However, it could also be as big as finding the cure for a disease, saving people from a burning building, or inventing a life-saving device. The unifying
