Here in Michigan we have things like the Soaring Eagle casino in the lower peninsula to remind of us of the Native Americans, and the farther we go north the more refuges we can come across. In Michigan we even have towns and schools like Central Michigan University’s mascot is a the Chippewa named after tribes. I noticed most the Native American tribes are west of the Mississippi river while New York City is the most populated city with Native Americans according to Schaefer, Richard. T. (2015) Table. Largest of the tribes and reservations is the Navajo at the top of the list. Here in Michigan the Chippewa Indians are the largest Native American tribe. Chippewa Indians were one of the few tribes where the people were relocated rather than
The clothing of the Chippewa Indians was oftentimes made of animal skin. The tendons were taken from the animals and used as thread for the clothing that the Chippewa wore. The men wore a long piece of animal skin or cloth between their legs and belted it at the hips. The flaps then covered the front and behind of the men. Leggings were worn by both women and men and sometimes they were covered with fancy fringe. The leggings were created from animal skin and therefore were quite insulating during the cold winters. Women sometimes wore long skirts over the top of their leggings. Women wore a thin blouse, basically like a poncho, that included a cut out at the neck for the head to go through. Fancy aprons were worn on special occasions.

The Chippewa Tribe Tepees are spreaded throughout the grassy land, families are rolling up their homes to look for food. These people moved around searching for food and a good hunting place. These people are called the Chippewa or Ojibwa Indians which means “puckered up” because of their moccasins tops being sewn together (Ditchfield 8). They live around the Great Lakes in North America and some parts of Canada (9).

Hiawatha was an Iroquois Indian who wanted the Iroquois Tribes to unite together. He did not enjoy Iroquois battling each other, though he did agree with the Iroquois fighting with other tribes of different languages. Hiawatha persuaded the tribes of the Iroquois to create a Confederacy of Peace while being the Keeper of the Wampum, a chief position of leadership.
In the United States, there are over 500 federally recognized American and Native tribes. All which study and practice their own set of cultures and values. Religion, language, food and way of dress are what makes every tribe different in their own unique way. The “Indian Wars” of both the 18th and 19th century caused many of these tribes to relocate thus causing them to not only lose their homelands but also their cultural identity. Native Americans were prohibited from practicing religion and cultural ceremonies. This caused a recession in youth obtaining the knowledge to keep their cultural renaissance alive and pass on their tribal dialects to future generations. Today, however Native Americans are thriving at branding their youth with generation after generation of language, religion, ceremonial tradition etc. The Native American culture
The Ottawa tribe and culture of the tribe is eminently fascinating and beautiful. The Ottawa tribe has a great deal of history behind it. The name “Ottawa” is originally spelled “Odawa” in their native language. The language that they speak is mostly English, but their native language is Ojibwa, which is related to Anishinaabe language. The tribe’s original homeland, according to bigorrin.org, is mostly in southern Ontario in Canada, which is where the name of “Ottawa” or “Odawa” came from, and Michigan. There are multiple Ottawa tribes, but there is one here in Manistee, Michigan, they are the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. There is a legion amount of people that are in the Little River Band that are exceedingly close to me. The Little River Band is full and rich in culture. “The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, a Michigan tribe that has survived to the present day despite the expansionist and assimilationist policies that nearly robbed it of its identity in the late nineteenth century”, explained James McClurken who published the book “Our People, Our Journey”. He then explains that they Little River Band was forced onto a reservation on the Pere Marquette and Manistee Rivers in 1858. The tribe was getting pushed and shoved around for countless years and their culture was disintegrating. In fact, my boyfriend, Andrew, his grandmother, Margaret Chandler, was a strong and tough working representative that helped and pushed the people of their tribe for over
The Choctaw Indians of Alabama are a band of Indians that managed to remain behind in the outer regions of north Mobile and south Washington counties after their tribal lands were given up to the United States in 1830. Beginning in 1830, the most significant period of their removal from their homelands, the majority of the Choctaw tribe was forced along the Trail of Tears settling on reservation lands in Mississippi and Oklahoma. A small group of about 45 families avoided removal by settling and hiding out in the woods surrounding the small communities of Citronelle, Mt. Vernon, and McIntosh.
Though obvious to the name, the American Indian Tribes had much to do with the growth of what we now know of as the US. Long ago when the english settlers came over with Columbus, on the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, they had found that there were people living there, were very different from “the white man”. But the American Indians have been located throughout the states from the very beginning and are still thriving, in some cases. One of the more commonly known, American Indian Tribes is the Cherokee tribe.(WKU Meteorology; Dr. Greg Goodrich)
The Northeast had great forests and many rivers and lakes. The Iroquois is one of the tribe that lived along the St. Lawrance river which is located in what is now known as New York State, so that they had some natural resources such as woods and animals meat.
The people dwelt in "towns" located in scattered autonomous tribal areas related by kinship throughout the southern Appalachian region.
Pueblo Indians lived in New Mexico. They built their houses out of clay that was baked with other things to make it hard and like stone. Today in the west there are still many homes made out of material very similar. Pueblo women wore a knee length dress that covered the right shoulder but left the left shoulder bare. In the 1900s evangelist did not think this was modest so they began to wear shirts underneath. Today that style is still around. In the west the soil isn't as good. The Pueblos lived in the west and they had to survive. They came up with ways that they could plant all kinds of plants with the dry soil. Thanks to them, today we have ways to plant crops in the west. The Pueblo Indians Spanish just liked they inspired Americans.
The Lenape Indians are the natives of New Jersey and were around well before any of the explorers or our ancestors came to the area. They had a society rich of culture, traditions, beliefs and customs. They are one of the largest Indian tribes on the east coast, containing three primary divisions or clans. Frederick Hodge (1907) worked for the Bureau of American Ethnology and has done extensive research on the topic of Native Americans. Hodge compiled a detailed reference book called The Handbook of American Indians North of Mexico, which gives detailed histories on many of the American Indian tribes. According to Hodge, the Lenape or Delaware Indians were an Indian society based from the Delaware area all the way to southern New York in
Vanessa Atine is a Navajo Indian that was born in the United States. Her family resides mainly in Arizona and southern Utah on the Navajo reservation. She was born and raised as a Navajo, but did not participate in her culture until she moved back onto the reservation two years ago. The Atine family moved around frequently, they have lived all over Utah and Arizona. When Vanessa was in third grade they moved into the Kearns area and stayed until she was in tenth grade. The constant moving was mainly due to financial instability and job searching. Native Americans do not have all of the opportunities other Americans do when it comes to finding jobs. There is a lot of prejudice and discrimination towards Native Americans dating back to
