Chile My essay is going to be about the country chile and how they celebrate the holiday.in their country. Their traditions are quite similar to the United states and Mexico. Chile celebrates Christmas like the U.S but roman catholics go to midnight mass and celebrate there. A popular DRink in Chile is called 'Cola de Mono’ or monkey tail which is made with coffee , liqueur , milk, cinnamon , and sugar . They also put up a christmas tree to represent the holiday season and get gifts for everyone in their family and community. People also prepare a cake or loaf called panettone some people like it sweet though. they say happy holidays in chile (felices vacaciones) so they're
It is primarily made up of children dressed in silver and gold robes carrying lit candles and pictures of Mary and Joseph riding a donkey. Sometimes they may become quite elaborate with live donkeys, parishioners dressed like Mary and Joseph, and a small group carrying a manger scene. Adults and musicians follow the procession, which visits selected homes. The homes have been chosen before the Posada, and the group goes up to the house and asks for lodging for Joseph and Mary. Traditionally, the families do not let the procession come in, but the hosts often provide refreshments. At each stop, passages of scripture are read and Christmas carols are sung. When they are finally allowed into a house, the La Posada dinner, provided by the host family of the night, includes Hispanic dishes as tamales, menudo and posoli. As the night draws to an end, small bags filled with treats and candies called aguinaldos are distributed as parting gifts to the
Religion played a big role in shaping the values, attitudes, and conduct of the Spanish during the Age of Discovery and Conquest (1492-1579). The colonial church provided control and a standard of conduct and living for the new world. In fact, the colonial church had even more power in Spanish America then it did in Spain. Why this is important though, is because it limited the possibility of rebellion and opposition. As long as the church was in place, there was Spanish order, and as long as there was Spanish order, the colonization process could continue to run smoothly and prosper.
Like Thanksgiving, Christmas also has their main dish and it’s a huge oven cooked ham that is complimented by very many side dishes but never the less followed up by the famous Christmas time eggnog. Both wonderful holidays put up magnificent feasts for family and loved ones to gather around and enjoy.
The central focus and purpose of teaching this learning segment is to educate students about other holidays and cultures, but specifically focusing on Christmas in Italy. While this unit is essentially literacy based, it is also linked to Social Studies when students use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of themes, traditions, and stories in different countries. This unit supports diversity within the classroom and it will expose students to the different ways of celebrating holidays among various cultures. The essential literacy strategy used throughout this unit is to analyze, explain, and describe the similarities and differences between Christmas in Italy and Christmas in their own home in the United States. The students are required to examine the way Christmas is celebrated in Italy in a variety of different ways, through both teacher directed guidance and student centered learning.]
Have you ever wondered how sexuality is viewed in the eyes of a different culture? Since America is a melting pot specifically with the Latino culture we have and is a very diverse country, it still carries culture identity. When you have a set cultural ideology for example the Latino Culture ideology, it sets the rules and norms for gender and sexual identity. In this essay we will be talking about how religious aspects of the Latino/a culture are affecting how people view sexual orientation. How religion in the Latino culture creates a discrimination against homosexuality and non-gender norms. This topic was chosen because I believe it is interesting how some cultures are used to believing that certain rituals and big events have to be within a man and a woman and cannot be both. I have personally witnessed how sexuality does affect the Latino culture; and has been involved in the rituals that make it so heteronormative. Through evidence of religious cultures, gendered identities and family structures we will see how religion in the Latino culture shapes and forms sexuality. I will be examining how Catholicism shapes cultural norms for sexual orientation and gender identity, how heteronormativity is reinforced as the main stream within the religious Latino culture and how it is insensitive towards homosexuality. How having family and social circles that are used to a culture around are perpetuating gender identity against sexuality.
Mexico and Latin America celebrate “El Día de la Raza.” They celebrate this day in remembrance of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas. This day and month celebrates many nationalities of people having a common beginning, tradition, or language in the history of Mexico, Central America, and South America. Besides this throughout the month hispanics and latinos celebrate Hispanic Heritage through festivities, music, dancing, and food their Independence of their countries. Unlike us, we Americans celebrate our Independence day a little differently, like having cook outs, fire works, socializing, meeting up with friends and family, listening to music, and having fun. But overall it's the same idea like music, socializing, and eating
To begin with holidays and celebrations play a big role in the Hispanic culture and for me as well. For example the Hispanic community has special types of food and drink to go along with a holiday. For instance during Christmas there is a traditional drink called ponche navideño which is a Christmas punch made
Hispanics are transforming the nation’s religious landscape, not only because of their increasing numbers but also because they are practicing a distinctive form of Christianity. Religious expressions associated with the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements are a key attribute of worship for Hispanics in many of the major religious traditions — far more so than among non-Latinos. Moreover, the growth of the Hispanic population is leading to the emergence of Latino-oriented churches across the country . Although the vast majority of religious Hispanics identify as Catholic (Pew, 2007), a significant minority practice various Pentecostal faiths. Many of those are recent converts. The desire for a more direct, personal experience with God emerges as by far the most potent motive for these conversions.
As a transfer student from Pasadena City College, I struggled to adapt to the fast paced quarter system in my first year at Cal Poly Pomona. Lacking of confidence in my communication skill, I did not try to get involved on campus because of my sense of insecurity and the fear of getting embarrassed. However, after spending two quarters and having a comprehensive knowledge of the available resources on campus, I decided that it was the time for me to push my boundaries and to challenge myself to get involved on campus as much as I could to train my soft skills.
Many non-Hispanic people tend to think that all Hispanics are Mexican. Mexicans make up almost two thirds of the Hispanic population in the United States, but that does not mean that there is any shortage in diversity among Hispanics. Being Hispanic makes it easy for me to identify the differences in Latin America culture. Hispanics are one of the most racially diverse ethnic groups in the world. Hispanics are light skinned, black with afro textured hair, Indigenous, Asian, Spanish, German, and Italian.
Throughout this semester we have focus on a variety of topics that relate to the Latino community. I found all the topics very interesting but, the one that got my attention the most is religion and sexual orientation within the Latino community. I found really interesting how religion shapes gay men or women in the Latino community. For my final paper for this class, I want to take a different approach, I want to talk about how religion and cultural beliefs affect the life of gay Latino men. In the book “The Rain God” by Arturo Islas, on his book he talks about how it was hard for Miguel Chico to come out the closet to his family because of these catholic church beliefs they have. In the other side there’s the film “La Mission” directed by Peter Bratt who did a great job on showing
Americans and Hispanics have different family traditions that dictate how each holiday is celebrated. On Christmas, which begins December 25th, Americans have a tradition to decorate a pine tree and stocking resting over a fireplace. A large meal is prepared and cookies are left by the fireplace with a glass of milk for santa claus. Families get together and open presents. In hispanic culture christmas is celebrated on December 24th (nochebuena) and is highly religiously with the three kings replacing santa clause. A meal and the decorations are still common among the two groups, however the celebration of cooking a meal with the family ensues one day prior to American Culture. Another difference is that children are raised to leave a box of hay for the camels to feed on while the three kings stop at each home. New Year's in American Culture is celebrates with a sip of an alcoholic beverage such as champagne or sparkling non-alcoholic drinks. Hispanics celebrate the night with an alcoholic drink named coquito. Coquito is made on Christmas and New years. Everyone in the family takes a sip of coquito when the ball dropped on New year's
White Americans receive favorable treatment due to racial disparity in the justice system due to a modern stereotype that, based on the color of your skin, you are considered a threat. There are many cases of wrongful convictions based on skin color – a man of color will often receive a longer sentence than a white man. Of course, there has always been racism in the world – it is inescapable. In a report by Samuel Gross, “Race and Wrongful Convictions”, he claims, “African Americans are more than seven times more likely to be imprisoned for murder than white Americans, and more than six times as likely to be killed in a homicide” (Gross). Considering this, it is clear there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Currently, the American justice system is biased in its treatment of black men and for society to progress, this issue
Some the holidays of the mexican culture include, new years eve, new years day, constitution day, good friday, easter, labor day, cinco de mayo, mothers day, fathers day, independence day, day of the races, day of the day, and christmas day.
One depiction of Mexican holidays shaping the city of Los Angeles into a Latino city can be seen in the Mexican holiday El Dia del Los Muertos. For instance, Mexicans believe in the concept of death not being the end of a person’s life as Paz
