In preschool children get lots of opportunities to play and interact with one another, and who they play with and where they like to play matters. A study was done to observe preschoolers in their social contexts such as where they like to play who they like to play with and playgroup size. The purpose for the study was to observe whether behavior in the fall was related to spring bullying and to see if bullying is different for boys and girls. Participants were preschool children gathered from eighteen head start classrooms and they were observed in three groups over three continous years. The study had a total of 255 children with 131 boys and 124 girls. “Children were observed in their classrooms and on their outdoor playgrounds. Trained observers coded childrens social and interpersonal behaviors over the fall semester of preschool.” (Andrews, Hanish, Fabes and Martin, 2014) Children were observed throughout the school day and obserevers noted if children played one on one or in groups and the gender of childrens peers was noted (Same gender, other gender, and mixed gender play groups) Lastly childrens location was noted. Observers also noted any peer bullying that was observed. The results of the study were that children spent more time playing one on one then in groups for both boys and girls.
For my middle childhood observation I chose a 10 year old female by the name of Mycah Landry. Just to give you a bit of a background, Mycah attends a magnet school and makes straight A’s. She is a very smart young girl. We will start off by comparing Mycah’s physical development to that of Berger’s in the text. During my observation at the preschool here at Harper, I looked around and realized a lot of similarities and differences it has; compared to other daycare and preschool centers. The age of children in the room I observed was ages 3-5 with one lead teacher, and depending on the ratio of how many kids showed up on that day, about three or four helping teachers. The program was set up to a very open, happy and overwhelming setting. Every furniture and object in the room had a sign saying what it was, and then underneath the typed out word was the children’s way of writing what the object was. For this assignment, I observed my six year old niece, Faustine Bui who was born on August 16, 2007, at the park where I was babysitting her with her mom for approximately thirty minutes. The park I observed her at is packed with children and dogs are allowed. There is a large play area with jungle-jims and slide and it includes a sandy area which has a variety of playing equipment as well.
The child I observed was a seven-year-old girl in Year 2 who sat on the second highest ability table in a mixed class. While not in school, she lived a substantial distance away meaning she travelled to and from school by car and was often the first child to arrive in the morning and the last to leave in the afternoon. I will focus on the social and emotional development of this child who, from now onwards, will be referred to as C.
This was my third field assignment. I elected to sit in the third grade, gifted class of Mrs. Alexis Martin at Hynes Elementary School. I chose to observe a public school for this assignment since my first two schools were parochial schools. Although these were all different grades and age levels, I thought I would have a richer experience by diversifying my subjects. I have not been disappointed in my decision.

I observed a classroom of four-year-old students who are enrolled at the Child Development Center on the George Mason University campus. This observation lasted about fifteen minutes with a total of twelve students in the classroom. At the time of my observation the students were engaging in free playtime where they are allowed to play games, make crafts, and interact with their fellow classmates. The school I went to visit was Public School 69. It was my little brothers elementary school. The reason I chose the school, was because I remember seeing him happy every time he came home from kindergarten. Every day he would come home and have a different project he did in class to show off. The outside of the school looked like a regular public school, but inside Miss Suzy’s* (not her real name) classroom was bright, warm, and inviting.
