Introduction Within the last 30 years, there has been an increase in childhood obesity that is alarming for parents, health care professionals, and children advocates. This epidemic is a result of children not participating in regular exercise and eating high caloric, fast food. We can combat this epidemic by increasing the education to the family and encourage more physical activity and nutritious foods. The Problem Delaware conducted a research in 2006 and then again in 2008 and noticed an increasing alarming rate of children who are becoming overweight. The statistics which were published in the March 2010 Health Affairs Journals showed an increase of 4% in 2008 from already an alarming rate of 37% in 2006. In a study conducted by Patricia M. Anderson and Kristen F Butcher who have written “Childhood Obesity: Trend and Potential Causes “has stated “based on Nielsen data, overall daily minutes of television watching has climbed over the decades. The statistics show that it has increase by 15% from 1990’s to 2000’. Children may be also substitute other forms of media, including videos, videos games and the internet, for television watching. According to a 1999 study, children spent 19.3 hours a week watching television, another 2.3 hours playing video games, and a 2.5 hours in front of the computer internet just over one day of “screen time” a week”. A policy statement from “The American Heart Association written by Deborah R. Young, PHD” stated that “regular physical activity is an important behavior for general health and to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, obesity and some forms of cancer”. She suggest that children should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. The National Football League has also joined the forces by promoting “Play 60” which is a campaign to encourage kids to be active for 60 minutes a day in order to help reverse the trend of childhood …show more content…

If we know better, we do better. Schools throughout the nation are making an overall effort to inform children and parents the proper way to eat and exercise to eliminate this epidemic. Some government agencies have stepped in to ensure childhood obesity is not getting out of control. Proposal In order to combat childhood obesity, parents need to take action now. One way parents can get involved is to encourage their children to be physically active. Turning off the televisions, video games and internet is the first step. Getting involved with your children’s activity level will promote good relationships and provide motivation. Making physical activity fun, by having competitive games or introducing your children into organized sports and recreations, will promote the physical activity needed to assist in fighting childhood obesity. Making correct food choices and encourage health eating habits will also help in this epidemic. Providing plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products. Introduce low fat milk rather than whole milk. Choose lean meats, poultry, and fish. Serve reasonable sized potions. Encourage your family to drink more water and cut out sugary sweetened beverages. Stay away from the high calorie meals within the fast food
