My own position on the issue of whether or not childeren should be restricted from spending time in front of media screens. What i really think is that childeren should be restricted for spending to much time in front or on media screens. The reason being is becasue (paragragh 4") it say in this text that in many of the studies report that television viewing by preschoolers lowers thier executive functionssuch as the ability to complete a given task. It also leads to lower test scores later in school an it aslo says that for the first time its seein a decrease in the kids creativity. Also, to me i think that these kids don't have to be completly but they shouldn't spend almost all there time on it. this is why i do agree with the fact of keeping
I agree with the passage ''Screen Time Limits Are Vital For Children''. The reason I agree with it is Because, I can understand and relate to the circumstances. In the passage it states ''Children in the United States have an average of 7.5 hours of screen time per day''. For example, My younger brother is only 7 years old and he's on his ipad from when he gets out of school at 3 pm and doesn't turn it off till 8 pm. My main point is that the younger they start off with a screen infront of them it's hard to get them to let go of the screen because, they are so use to having it infront of them.
Statistics show that screen time negatively affects children’s learning abilities and development. “The effects of so much screen time can include speech delays, aggressive behavior and obesity.” (Lavey) Since parents play a role in how much television their kids can watch, they can minimize the chances of their brains not developing correctly. “The first 2 years of life are considered a critical time for brain development. TV and other electronic media can get in the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and others, which encourages learning and healthy physical and social development.” (Kids Health) Children do
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends parents place consistent limits on media exposure, and using media in positive ways such as educational games or shows. You can do this
My stance on the screen debate is children should have the least amount of non-educational screen time as possible. I say non-educational because there are games, shows, and computer programs that do benefit children and teach them new information. Before the age of 2 there should really be no screen time what so ever because this is the time if the most brain development. I wouldn’t want the prime time of my child’s development to be spent watching TV or playing video games. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development are a good example of why children shouldn't be having screen time before 2.
I disagree with the othe passage because its claim children should be able to look at t.v for alleast 7 hours a day. Thats why most kids be sleepy or dont want to go to school or there grades fall behind its weaking them making them dont want them to do nothing.and also play is also
The startling truth is that when the American Academy of Pediatrics made their fateful recommendation in 1999 that children under the age of two should have no screen time at all, it was not based on any research. There was plenty of research to show that babies really need attentive and loving care from a parent or caregiver, but no research showing they actually benefitted from time in front of a television (Guernsey 4). The American Academy of Pediatrics decided to take a position that would raise the alarm about media use in very young children, hoping it would prompt parents to think carefully about what their young kids were watching. According to Donald Shifrin, a physician on the American Academy of Pediatrics Media Committee who was interviewed by Lisa Guernsey “We figured, we don’t have any research to show this, but who is going to argue with this recommendation?” (Guernsey 4).
Children should not be restricted from the media center of the tv screen or smart phones etc. However there should be a limit. If there is a limit on watching tv then the kids wouldnt be couch potatos like i use to be. In my defense it was amazing sitting around lounging watching tv with friends playing video games etc. But there comes the bad things about sittin inside all day watching tv. You can gain alot of weight watching tv,There for you can become obese and many other health issues can come from it.
With the advancement in technology it has become common for infants, toddlers, and young children to be exposed to electronics such as televisions, computers, and videogames for hours at a time. Environmental factors affect children in significant ways. The effects the media and screen time children are revealed to influence their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Television and media can both hinder and encouraging their growth. It is important for guardians, caregivers, teachers, whomever has a child they look after or care for, to make accommodations to construct the best possible environment for children to flourish in. At such a young age, these young humans are like sponges, they absorb much of what surrounds them. Because of this, the importance of trying to make it possible that they are mainly witnessing things helpful to the development of the child and thereby, benefiting them later in life.
This view is supported by Webster-Stratton who described television as “rendering children passive” and referred to research indicating that excessive exposure to television and computers “place children at risk for harmful effects on their physical, social and psychological development”. As a way of mitigating this, she suggests watching television or computer games with the child in order to address any issues that might arise or to identify inappropriate content (2006, p234-236).
After i had read the passges on limiting children from screen watching, and the other passage about not limiting the children from screenplay. I have dedicide that i am choosing to go with the limiting children from screenplay for the simple fact, children who eyes are stuck to the television are less active in alot of areas. Like spending time in front of the screen also fractuers children attention and saps their mental and physical energy.
"Children of all ages are constantly learning new things. The first 2 years of life are especially important in the growth and development of your child's brain. During this time, children need good, positive interaction with other children and adults. Too much television can negatively affect early brain development. This is especially true at younger ages, when learning to talk and play with others is so important."
I agree with Annie Murphy Paul, a writer for the magazine, Good House Keeping point that parents are responsible for children’s usage of technology. In Paul’s article she cited a study that was reported by the American Journal of Epidemiology which reported that “while half of parents surveyed in a 2010 study said they always or often set limits on screen time, 18 percent of their kids really disagreed” (Paul). This highlights a key discrepancy between parents and children. In the eyes of children parents do not restrict children enough. This is exactly what Alessondra Villegas, a researcher at Fordham University, states in her journal. She claims that parents must be able to develop clear rules and that parents must also be firm with the boundaries that are set forth (Villegas 2-3). In Villegas’s research she found that parents use technology to watch their children. Villegas concluded that, “on average, mothers claim to use the television as a babysitter for at least one hour a day,” (6). Her work , which was published in the New York State Communication Association later goes on to say that television
Television has become such an essential part of our daily lives, that it is very hard to imagine life without television. In the past, people obtain knowledge and news by reading books and newspaper. Nowadays we obtain news and different kind of knowledge and can be entertained through watching television. Television is an invention that makes our lives more convenient. People of all ages love watching television, especially children and teenagers. They are glued to their televisions. In the USA, children aging from 6-16 spend 5.5 hours on average per day on television. We can see that television affect the children a lot as they spend so much time on television every day. There is one question that every parent will ask: are the
Television is a big part of today’s society. Everybody watches television, including the children. There is a potential problem with letting children watch television. Ask this question, would someone let their own child watch some of the programming that they watch, too? Some of these programs are intended for the adult generation, not young children. Violence has a major role in television these days. Letting children watch this violence could corrupt their minds and eventually lead to bad behavior. There needs to be a limitation on the types of television programming that parents let their children watch, because violence in television can negatively affect children.
For the past 15 years, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has put their concerns about a number of time children spend viewing the television (AAP, 2001). Referring to the AAP guidelines, children older than two years old should watch no longer than 1 to 2 hours of quality programming, and children under two years old should not have any television viewing, as the first two years of life is a critical period for brain development. Also, no media should be in the child’s room, especially young children. However today, it is an epidemic scenario for children to ask for their personal television in their bedroom. In a study by Roberts, Folour, Rideout, & Brodie (1999), it reported that 32% of the children between 2 to 7 years old and 65% of 8 to 18 years olds have television sets in their bedrooms (AAP, 2001). These percentage leads to an estimation of 3 hours per day of television and an
