Child abuse was common among the workhouse to scare the children into working hard or to discipline them. Now parents abuse their children because they were abused as kids or to release anger, and discipline the child. Child abuse is the neglecting or beating of a minor (-18), abuse of a child is also can be verbal abuse, in which you put them down and make them pity themselves.
In the Victorian Era Britain, many children were sent to workhouses, or were in orphanages in which they were abused or neglected by an adult. Some orphanages did not feed their orphans enough food, and beat them when they ask for more food (Dickens, 1961). “Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.”-J.K Rowling. Being forgotten is a fear that children that are neglected have to go through, being forgotten is more damaging than someone disliking you because it’s like you are invisible and no one cares about/for you (fearof.net, 2015). The children were in harsh working conditions, they worked really hard, made to lift heavy objects, given one portion of food, not much sleep, and NO SHOWERS. These are harsh conditions many Victorian Era children had to suffer through. From 1841 through 1845 61% of the population died under the age of 5 (Child Mortality, 2000). In the Victorian Era children were pretty much slaves to any adult, the children could do nothing about their situation, no one to contact, nowhere to go and nowhere to hide.
