Research and Critique of an Article
“How Childcare Providers Interpret ‘Reasonable Suspicion’ of Child Abuse” by Benjamin H. Levi, Kathryn Crowell, Kerryann Walsh and Cheryl Dellasega is an article published in 2015, and is based on whether there is a consensual definition to what is considered to be reasonable suspicion by all childcare providers in regards to reporting abuse. The study revealed that is not a consensual definition and that childcare providers should be similarly trained to ensure an overall unity to what is grounds for the reporting of abuse.
General Considerations
Of the four researchers involved in this study, two obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) and the remaining two a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD). Qualifications were met by each researcher for this study. The title, “How Childcare Providers Interpret ‘Reasonable Suspicion’ of Child Abuse”, is appropriate for the described study. The title implies a research on the interpretation of child abuse by medical professionals and what they constitute as reasonable suspicion to report as abuse; the article follows this idea. The abstract gives a comprehensive, yet precise, idea of the study and allows a new

The interpretation of what is considered to “reasonable suspicion” by each childcare provider will be a key factor in the decision of when to report abuse based upon observed warning signs. The researchers in this study are able to adequately define and provide explanations to ensure the meaning of their research study is appropriately conveyed to readers. The study portrays information that could be found useful in today’s practice. It gives and overview look at what occurs and gives rise to the idea of an introduction of a more thorough and updated training for professionals to provide a standard for what should be grounds for reasonable suspicion when reporting abuse (Levi, Crowell, Walsh & Dellasega,

I work as a Social Worker in a local authority child protection unit. The following report will look into effectiveness of a new assessment tool which is currently in the process of being ruled out in the Local Authority I work. The Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP2) is designed as an evidenced-based assessment tool for evaluating levels of parental care and to identify aspects of neglectful care. Neglect is a type of maltreatment all practitioners of the Child Protection Team team are frequently confronted with. The following assignment is based on current findings from the NSPCC and supported by 3 questionnaire completed by two Social Worker working in the same child protection unit and one Health Visitor working in the same local authority.
In a case of suspected abuse your priority should be making sure that if you have any suspicions you should report them and follow them through, you should do this because even if you are unsure whether they are ex piercing a use, you should not just let it slide as you may be covering up abuse if you do. if you look on the accidental and non accidental bruising chart and you think you see bruises where it states on the non accidental chart but the parents have not mentioned it, you should report it, don't just brush it off because you are embarrassed that you may be wrong, you should do this because even if you are wrong, you have done your job in the well being of the child within you're care. If you are suspicious of a child's behaviour, if they are awkward when it comes to a certain sex, show sexual advances I.e. Pull their underwear down continuously even after being told it's wrong
Guidelines: Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010, What to do if you’re worried that a child is being abused 2006,
When a child is suspected of being abused, neglected or placed at imminent risk of serious harm by a member of the staff of a private or public school or an institution that cares for the child, the person in charge of the school or facility must notify the child’s parent or other person responsible for the child’s care that a report has been made. The state’s department of child abuse responsibility is to notify the head of a facility, school or establishment that a report has been made.
When dealing with suspected or actual abuse it is important that we don’t make premature judgments and try to deal with the situation without having all information and evidence required. Just because (for example) a child comes into school regularly with cuts and bruises, this does not mean that they are being abuse. Observations can play a key role into getting actual evidence. By making premature judgments and proceeding to accuse parents/carers of abusing a child can cause a lot of unnecessary upset to both parent and child and make your workplace look inadequate.

The controversial issue of whether or not Child Protective Services are doing their jobs properly, has grabbed nationwide attention. Child Protective Services is the name of a government agency in many states of the United States whose mission is to respond to reports of child abuse and neglect. Some of these cases may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and mental abuse (Wikipedia). The child welfare system is corrupted. The parents and guardians who are accused of abuse are automatically labeled as guilty and will have to prove their innocence; instead of being innocent until proven guilty.
“The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act” states’ that “child abuse is the leading cause of death in children under the age of eighteen.” Child abuse occurs when adults inflict violence and cruelty upon children. For 30 years, advocates, program administrators, and politicians have joined to encourage even more reports of suspected child abuse and neglect. Their efforts have been successful, with about three million cases of suspected child abuse having been reported in 1993. Large numbers of endangered children still go unreported, but a serious problem had developed: Upon investigation, as many as 65 percent or the reports now being made are determined to be "unsubstantiated", raising serious civil liberties concerns and placing a huge burden on investigative staffs.
Child maltreatment is a widespread issue that affects thousands of children every year. There are four common types of child maltreatment; sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. All of these types of abuse are very serious and can have many consequences for the children and families. The most common consequence of severe child maltreatment is the removal of that child from their home (Benbenishty, Segev, Surkis, and Elias, 2002). Most social workers trying to determine the likelihood of removal evaluate the type and severity of abuse, as well as the child’s relationship with their parents (Benbenishty et al., 2002). When children are removed from their homes there are many options of alternative housing. The
INTRODUCTION: “Child Abuse occurs when a parent or a care taker physically, emotionally, or sexually mistreats or neglects a child resulting in the physical, emotional, or sexual harm or imminent risk of harm or exploitation, or in extreme cases the death of a child,” child abuse is a big deal because in today’s society many children face abuse, there are many effects and reasons as to why a child may be abuse.
Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.
