The hierarchy seems inconsistent in this family. It seems that the therapist is on top of the hierarchy with the mother and children underneath her. Working for Child Protective Services the therapist holds the most power and authority. The mother doesn’t have clear and consistent authority in the family. In terms of functioning there are no clearly defined roles in the subsystems. There is a diffuse boundary between the executive subsystem and the sibling subsystem this result in a confusion of roles. The mother is acting more like a peer in the sibling subsystem fighting for power and influence with her children. Within the sibling subsystem it seems that Anthony is on top of the hierarchy and Vanessa seems to be the least powerful member. She seems to be isolated and excluded. This is evidenced by the fact that she had her own room before Anthony moved back in. With Anthony moving in she had to move out her room and move in with mom. In this context Anthony has more power than mom and this places him above his mother in the hierarchy.

Practitioners and professionals working with children on a daily basis are in a good position to notice changes in a child's or young person’s behaviour which may be a possible sign of abuse. Children or young people may also confide in practitioners or allege that abuse has taken place.

Every individual in this world has their own unique identity that they belong to, but between the two sisters of April and Cheryl, and what they both endured throughout their early upbringings with being placed in foster care, and not being with their biological parents due to them being alcoholics, they lost their identity along the way. While they were both in foster homes, each sister had their own differences with their heritage, upbringings, and surroundings that affected both of their state of minds. I supervise and support a member of staff who keyworks a young person who suffers low self-esteem after growing up in a family dynamic of abuse. This young person suffers from attachment issues and has been known to be sexually exploited by older males. The young person also find it difficult to maintain positive relationship and after a short time will break down the relationship. The keyworker was advised to ask the social worker to do a referral to CAHMS to help support the young person in terms of their emotional needs. Myself and the keyworker had a consultation with a psychologist to discuss the case and what strategies we could use to help build the self-esteem and confidence of young the young person that was clearly showing signs that they needed support in this area. I also sent the keyworker on training on supporting young people manage their emotional needs. For this end of module assessment I will be looking at the case study of Safia Nazir, her husband Nazir Rashid and their 3 children Taqi, Asif and Amina who live in Scotland and have been bought to the attention of social services for various reasons. I will be demonstrating my understanding of what the social workers role would be in relation to this family, including the skills and knowledge needed to meet the family’s individual needs. The social worker in this case study is called Shona and what I have read of her and her initial steps to work with the family come across as appropriate and professional. I will go into more detail about Shona’s work and my understanding of her role later in the assignment and make potential comparisons or reflect on what I may or may not do differently. I will consider issues in relation to my personal and professional values and will also refer to policy and practice from English legislation; as this is my country of practice.
