Among the most avant garde of Manhattan properties is the storied Hotel Chelsea, aka the Chelsea Hotel or simply the Chelsea. The 12 storied red brick ironwork 250 unit hotel located on 222 West 23 Street in Chelsea Manhattan has witnessed layers of New York's steamiest history and hosted some pretty notable residents from groundbreakers and rule-makers to the great, the good, the famous, and the infamous. Built between 1883 and 1885 and owned by a consortium of 10 wealthy families, the Chelsea was New York's first co-op apartment complex. The tallest buidling in New York during its' day, it became a hotel in 1905, a designated NYC landmark since March 15, 1966, on the National Register of Historic Places since December 27, 1977 and though the years has been a hip, nurturing environment, closely associated with the bohemian types and the counter-culture. The Chelsea, who defines creativity and a freedom of our culture, has been home to a myriad of residents...some of the 20th century's most brilliant rising stars, from starving musicians, writers, and actors, to artists. http://web.archive.org/web/20021019161352/http://www.granta.com/extracts/1691 Among those names of guests, dilettantes, wannabes, groupies, and transients passing through the Chelsea's sacred portals or residents who eked out a living at the Chelsea were Tennessee Williams, Dylan Thomas, whose plaque at the entrance reminds all those that he 'lived and laboured here and from here sailed out to die.", Mark Tawin, O. Burnham and his partner John Root were Chicago’s leading architects. Daniel Burnham had experience in designing buildings that had never been attempted. Despite the soil conditions, Burnham and Root built the very first skyscraper, The Montauk. Burnham had extraordinary managerial and organizational skills. Burnham and Root together were able to build their firm to be one of the best in Chicago. They continued to do many challenging projects such as the Rookery and the Monadnock. Daniel Burnham handled many difficult times before he made a positive name for himself. Burnham was also very good to all his employees, “He installed a gym. During lunch hour employees played handball. Burnham gave fencing lessons. Root played impromptu recitals on a rented piano,” (Larson 2003, 27). In 1885, a fire had destroyed the Grannis Block that was Burnham and Root’s flagship structure. In 1888, “a hotel they had designed in Kansas City collapsed during construction, injuring several men and killing one” (Larson 2003, 29). With all the verbal attacks on Burnham’s career over both of the incidences, he remained very calm, but he was still very heartbroken.
It was a massive undertaking with over four million square feet but was impressively all constructed in 17 months and opened one year from conception in 1919. Cass Gilbert was the architect for this complex, which was essentially composed of two rectangular block long buildings interconnected by three bridges on the third floor of each and separated by a street way. These larger of the two buildings is further separated in two by a train track that would have brought trains right into the building for easy loading and unloading. Above the tracks is a series of trusses that support a long triangular glass sunroof and allow light to flood the center enclosed atrium of the more massive complex. The smaller building also connects to the atrium with three covered piers. Cass Gilbert was a student of the Beaux Arts, however, in the Brooklyn Army Terminal we see Gilbert fabricate a more utilitarian design, which was probably because of the space being more about function rather than form and subsequently allowed the easy adaptive reuse of the space decades later. “The complex was constructed of girder-less, steel reinforced concrete slabs and included 96 centrally controlled push-button elevators, the largest elevator installation of its time. ” The scale and speed with which the complex was built was very typical of its time, in the early turn of the century factories were still a common and necessary typology in the city as they were a source of economy and jobs. But after the Second World War the world had changed, New York City had also changed and factories began moving out of cities and into the Midwest or overseas. There was no need for factory warehouse of such massive size and the complex closed down in 1964 until 1981 when a rehabilitation effort by was jumpstarted by the city. Today, the Brooklyn Army
Washington DC is known for patriotic monuments and grand office buildings. The city’s architecture has become a cornerstone of the Capital’s identity and depicts the area’s unique and rich history. An overlooked part of Washington DC’s architecture is found in the city’s hotels. These buildings represent distinct architecture, tell aspects of the area’s most historic moments and have housed the prominent and elite who have come through the Capital within the past two centuries. The Omni Shoreham Hotel and the Willard InterContinental Hotel have many similarities, yet also many differences. All in all though, they both contribute to Washington DC’s identity. This paper will describe the hotels, analyze their architecture, explain their significance to American and DC history and culture and draw similarities and differences between the two buildings.
If you have ever been to Philly, you have probably passed it at one time—an old abandoned building, which at one time was the center of Philadelphia attention. I have travelled through Philadelphia many times and have passed this impressive Victorian style building. Despite its abandoned and rundown appearance, I have always said that this building had so much beauty and potential. The outside of the building has intricate arching and architecture, and has eye-catching brick and stone detailing. Driving down Broad Street, going from North Philly towards the center of downtown, my eyes always drifted to the left to stare at this building—a structure somewhat resembling the “Tower of Terror” from Disney World. After passing this building various times, my mind began to question if this building was at one time a well-kept and prosperous place. As I passed this building once more, I took note of the rickety sign that sits on top of the building that reads “Divine Lorraine Hotel”. I began research on the hotel and had never envisioned the history which stands behind that old desolate building. At one time, the Divine Lorraine Hotel was the place to live in Philadelphia. Broad Street was a populated and flourishing area in the city. So what is the history behind this building and what ever happened to the Divine Lorraine Hotel? The hotel of striking architecture, through years of history, fell to shambles after being one of the most successful hotels in Philadelphia.
Attending this meeting were Joshua David, a freelance writer who lived near the midsection of the High Line and Robert Hammond an artist who lived a few blocks from the High Line’s southern section. The two young men did not know each other before this meeting, happen to be sitting next to each other that both share the same interest in saving the High Line from being demolished. Other in attending wanted the High Line demolished including Mayor Giuliani. His administration, were aware that Manhattan west side neighbourhood Chelsea was gentrifying into a neighbourhood of art galleries, restaurants, and loft living, which all believed the last surviving portion of the former New York Central Railroad was an eyesore. From this meeting, David and Hammond were motivated to save the High Line and several months later, the two founded the non-profit organization ‘Friends of the High Line’. For ten years the non-profit group led the fight to save the High Line, arguing against those who considered it an eyesore and thought the High Line was an obstruction to real estate development. The Friends of the High Line raised money, gained support from celebrities and politicians, and became expert in navigating the complexities of New York City Politics (Goldberger, 2011; La Farge,

This pride came with a theme of domination, this challenge to be the best, the biggest and the most extravagant building on the skyline very obviously indicates the ambition and motivations of the architects and commissioners of these buildings. The Carbide and Carbon building, for example, comprehensively embodies the 1920s and 30s architecture. The 1929 addition to the Chicago skyline was an extravagant statement that “epitomizes the lavish excitement of Art Deco,”. This building, the brainchild of the Burnham brothers, was ornamented with genuine “24 karat gold…[,] luxurious polished
This is my first time that I come to New York, so I am curious about many things in this new place, such as the famous resorts, and the people here. As we know, the Times Square is very famous in New York. When I was in China, I hope I can visit Times Square, because I saw Times Square was very great in some of the opening of American series. Now, I am in New York, and I have enough chances to visit Times Square whenever I want. In there, it gives me a new horizon to understand the culture that is different from China.
How many times has there been a wreck. Did it take the sheriff's a long time to get there? More than enough, right. Chelsa was founded on March 1, 1996 and this city has never had police or a police station. People shoot in neighborhoods and wrecks happen, but with police those things could change and your children would be safer. With 10,183 people living in Chelsea there should be police so by raising taxes Chelsea will get police, a police station, and a safer city.
Wall Street and other big businesses bring in thousands of aspiring businessmen and women. Business has been booming in New York for years, making it another reason that New York is so well-known around the world. While the business itself is iconic, the architecture that lines Wall Street stands out from the normal picture of the city. There are no flashing signs and less street vendors, the buildings themselves look as professional as the business that takes place within them. This may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of New York, but it has definitely shaped what New York is

In 2014, during my vacations, I came with my family to visit this building. At that time, I saw the Empire State as a great place where you can see all New York and take amazing pictures of it. However, this year, during my visit, once I know all the history of New York City and its evolution, I realized the importance it has. When I was on the 80th floor, I saw part of the city from there,
