Table 1 above, explains the daily workout routine for NFL Cheerleaders across the nation. Exercise plans are not just for highschool cheerleaders or college cheerleaders but for professional athletes as well. Table 2 above, gives a 30 day everyday workout schedule and types of workouts for competitive cheerleaders throughout the season.
Everyone’s body is different, but what we all have in common is the body wants to obtain the correct equilibrium linked from being squeezed through a tough obstacle without becoming injured or being thrusted past what the body is gifted of. The sport cheerleading engages in cardiovascular strengthening and can help to increase the abilities of your heart and lungs. Correct conditioning to perform above excellence, training on the perfect way to throw stunts and tumbling passes, stretching for intense and flawless jumps, and safety prerequisites help avoid damages to the body. Exercise let alone during this activity has proved to help in weight loss, the building of strong muscles, flexibility, and being able to have the right mentality, hypothetically speaking engaged in using communication skills and being able to build a team support system. I have found plenty of evidence to claim as an argument of why cheerleading is a great source of exercise and how this sport can advance your body as well as to keep you healthy and in shape. The takeaway message from this research would be to take any type of activity sport to the maximum level of seriousness, because you can get hurt in anything you do, whether it be workouts, physical activity or even a slight jog. Great athletes frame the activity/sport of cheerleading seem simple, but performing the sport correctly demands physical power that constructs muscles not just in one part of the body, but the whole body. Definite locations on the cheerleading team including backspot and bases, must be adequate to raise and brace the lower part of the stunt or leveled stunts. Conducting these intense stunts requires unbelievable power, focus, and stability to undergo the mass of the other partners to guarantee their protection. Right before a game, football players huddle up as a team and they get “hyped-up” to win. The coach of the team gives them a game plan and they follow it. This same thing applies for the cheerleaders right before they take the mat. Their “game plan” is the routine that a choreographer made for them. Coaches change the routine to make them win. Many have seen her. Many know her. But who is the American cheerleader? Is she a blond haired, blue eyed sex symbol? Is she a drug-addicted girl with no brains and even fewer moral values? Maybe she is just your average, pretty, girl-next-door with a loud voice and lots of spirit. What is clearly true is that cheerleading and cheerleaders have evolved greatly over a century-long history. What started as one bold college student has turned into an activity with over 3 million participants (Brady 1); one that is backed by a $150 million industry (Williams 2). Modern cheerleading has come a long way from its historic roots, but large differences still exist between the iconic cheerleader, the stereotypical cheerleader, and the truth.
Cheer practices can sometimes only be two hours, but they can also be up to a long and hard seven hours. This requires athletes to sacrifice an extraordinary amount of time, often on weekends for them to succeed at a high level. In an interview recently conducted with a local cheerleader Rebecca Ruddock, who competes with a traveling cheer gym called Terre Haute Cheer University, (THCU) she said that she practices an average of nine hours a week with her different teams and an additional four hours a week on her own.
The univention of anything in today’s world, whether it be something that affects the whole world or a small village would cause an impact that would be felt by the population. A widespread concept around the world is that cheerleaders are simply there to lead the crowd and cheer for a football or basketball team. However, what most people don’t know is sideline cheerleading is not the only type of cheerleading. There is also competitive cheerleading. Competitive cheerleading is a high energy routine that includes stunting, tumbling, jumps, a pyramid, and a dance crammed into two minutes and 30 seconds. I have first-hand experience of both sideline and competitive cheerleading due to the fact I was a cheerleader for five years.
One component cheerleaders also must have is flexibility. “Flexibility is the range of motion in a joint or group of joints or the ability to move joints effectively through a complete range of motion. Flexibility training includes stretching exercises to lengthen the muscles” (VeryWell). Flexibility must be present in order for flyers (the girls that are lifted into the air) to pull positions in midair, for the whole team to perform various jumps, and also helps in tumbling, which is a very important skill to have when participating in competitive cheerleading. “Tumbling is a form of gymnastics that requires athletes to use their bodies to flip, twist, roll and jump” (OmniCheer). Tumbling can take years to develop and isn’t an easy skill at all. Some girls work their whole life to just master simpler areas of tumbling and only the best of the best can do some of the hardest tumbling, which incorporates twists while flipping in midair. The last skill that cheerleaders must have is coordination. There is a lot of dancing whenever it comes to cheerleading. Dancing can be considered easy but not when it must be sharp and synchronized with all of the other teammates, along with adding in facial expressions, which appeal to the judges. These aspects take loads of time to perfect and some of these skills take years to even begin learning how to do.

If you took a survey at your local high school, most would say that cheerleading isn’t a sport. As a cheerleader,i know, that many others will strongly disagree that cheerleading is a sport based on the difficulty in stunting we do on a daily basis. Everyday cheerleaders, as much as people think just stand in one place and say a catchy cheer for the football players, do a lot more than that. Cheerleaders need to hit a new stunt in their 2 ½ hour practice on a daily basis, whether it’s flipping in just three people's hands or flipping on the mats, it needs to be done. Unlike almost every other sport, you don’t have multiple quarters to do better and fight your way to victory. You only have 2 minutes and 30 seconds to do your absolute best.
Cheerleading is simply entertainment for viewers and is a social club for its participants. “Sports Beat - The Sport of Cheerleading: It’s a lot More than Just Pompoms and Smiles,” points out that a main benefit of cheerleading is the ability to “easily transition into the entertainment industry” (Hatton C-04). This statement supports our belief that cheerleading should not be considered a sport. Cheer-leading, the leading of cheers at sporting events is not a sport. Entertainment, versus athleticism, is more of what cheerleading is. Team supporters are present at games/events to raise school spirit and encourage cheering. Cheerleading generally requires a competition to be in progress, so the cheerleading itself can occur. This is not an activity which can take place alone.
