Charlie Evan was born in New Orleans on July 1, 1985 to Lawrence and Isabella Dalca. His father was the owner of a successful boxing gym located in the Quarter and his mother worked as a part-time waitress at a small diner. At the time of Charlie's birth, the Dalca parents were having marital issues and Isabella was quite firm in her want to leave NOLA and return to New York where she herself had been raised and where her family still remained. It seemed as though she planned to take her newborn son and make the move, with or without her husband. Knowing it was a losing battle and not wanting his family to be torn apart, Lawrence reluctantly agreed to leave his own hometown and make the move for his wife and son. He sold his gym to a close relative and used the money to fund their move.

He felt very lonely. As well as affecting his social life, the operation also affected Charlie emotionally. A few months after the operation, Charlie’s emotions changed negatively. In “Flowers for Algernon,” Charlie started out very happy, ordinary person with a good sense of humor, people enjoyed being around him. After he had an operation to help him belong, he became very serious and didn't do many fun things, he was not this type of person before the operation. The operation made him smart, but dull. As a result, he turned into someone he wasn’t; his co-workers and friends did not enjoy being with him anymore, in fact, the story says, they made it seem like they hated him. By changing himself, Charlie ended up losing most of the important people in his life and making him less happy as a result.

In context of the early twentieth century, the most prominent group to represent African-American’s in the United States was that of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The NAACP, as it is more commonly called, was founded on February 12, 1909 by a mixed group of individuals including but not limited to Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. DuBois and Archibald Grimké with the goal of creating a civil rights organization that would help assist in organizing for civil rights for blacks. One of its most prominent members, Charles Hamilton Houston, who became a part of the organization around the mid-twentieth century, changed the trajectory of the organization for years to come. “Expectation” was the word I endured throughout my high school life. The AVID organization expected a young man named Louries Attieh Gordon, Jr was to be achieved greatness with his academic advantage; the head coach of the Northwood High School Chargers- expected 110% from the new six-foot freshman; however, I expected myself to grow more social than my past being. How can dissimilar people, young and old, male and female, have diverse backgrounds, unlike goals, and still in some means can find the need to depend on one another? It is bizarre how the human being can need someone, even if it is an outsider, people can learn from one another, in all aspects. Some people have the trait to learn from other people, but, it is known that some people will not accept any type of support from anyone. Hence, don’t always be so hasty to think that someone is trying to tell you what to do, because, that bit of assistance that you disregard might be the one that helps you.

After the operation, in only a couple of months, Charlie starts showing signs of new intelligence. His grammar, improved, and he is able to reflect on what his does in the past something he wasn’t able to do before. He had finally gotten something use had always desired. Then, everything and everyone turned on him. In “PROGRESS REPORT 12” April 30th (pg. 60) Charlie writes: “now, they hate me for my knowledge and understanding. What in the name of god do they want of me? They’ve driven me out of the factory. Now I more alone than ever before…” Charlie got what he always wanted, and now he lost everything he had. It was a sacrifice it sounded like he didn’t want to make. I can tell just be the tone of his writing. This shows that we should embrace everything that we have. Charlie didn’t embrace everything, although he appreciated most of the thing he never became happy not being able to just enjoy life as it is.
