This paper will cover the conflict and compromise of the life and conquest of Charlemagne. It will cover the rise of Charlemagne and how his great conquest led to conflict and how it was compromised, by whom where when and why. Charles the Great has affected history forever and this paper will show how Charlemagne spread architectural ideas around the world and the events leading up to it. The dark ages occured after the fall of the Roman empire and is described as “prevailing ignorance and barbarism and was forced to a change in culture and enlightenment.” Charlemagne is said to be born around the year 740. His primary language was Latin and he understood many others. The Frank kingdom, which is known modern day France, Belgium and Western Germany was given to Charlemagne around 751. Most of his wars and battles were fought to gain land, armies, and to convert people to practice the faith of his religion, Christianity. Although Charlemagne was known for his control over Europe, he also took care of his own people, especially his own religion. If he heard of Christians suffering he would send them money. He ruled from 786 to 814 A.D. He was crowned Roman Emperor in 800, which angered the Emperor of the East because he was said to rule both the east and west. Roman Emperors did not like his take over as emperor but it did not lead to any physical conflict. He did not get very far in this empire because the laws of the Romans did not apply to the Franks (his most well known empire). He was known as king of the Franks and his territory expanded from Spain to southern Italy and the coast of Germany, this empire was known as the Carolingian Empire. His rein was not just pure dominance; the attacks he set forth were almost always carefully planned. Charlemagne ruled by having large numbers of soldiers ready at his command. He strategized everything he did, by doing things like gathering months of clothes, resources, and food ahead time to keep his armies prepared. His army conquered anyone in their path and gathered money and wealth along the way, making them even more dominant. Charles the great also used landscape to his advantage by using bridges to allow easy pass ways and making it easier to defend territory. In keeping with the tradition of his predecessors, Charlemagne’s reign was characterized by three decades of military campaigns. During his reign, Charlemagne led campaigns against the Saxons, the Lombards, Spain and Bavaria. His empire extended from Saxony in the North to the Spanish March in the South and Italy in the West. Einhard’s The Life of Charlemagne is one of several prominent texts from Mediaeval Europe. The main focus of the text is on the life of Charlemagne, the Frankish king from the Carolingian dynasty. Under his rule, the Frankish kingdom experiences an extensive period of prosperity and growth, especially in intellectually related areas since Charlemagne himself is a well-known patron of the arts (#). Hence, Charlemagne is the ruler often credited for the “Roman revival” across Mediaeval Europe. In order to ensure that Charlemagne’s glorious reign will leave its mark in history, all of Charlemagne’s works and accomplishments are accounted for Einhard’s book. As expressed in the preface of the book, Einhard’s intention is to document the life of the greatest king that is often overlooked in other texts (*). The last five weeks of my clinical rotation I was able to spend my time at the Marjorie R. Oakley Home for women. This is one of two recovery homes that is administered by The Recovery Group of Southern West Virginia, the other home ran by this organization is the New Beginnings Home for Men. While I spent much of my time with the ladies that stay at the women’s home I was also able to meet a few of the males that was staying at the men home. The recovery home was a type of “group” home created to help provide opportunities for both adult men and women trying to free themselves from the nasty cycle of addiction. The main goal of the homes is to help these individuals to get clean, and avoid relapsing due to addictive environments. The
