Over the past couple of months, we discussed several traits, skills, and behaviors that have contributed to the success of both past and present leaders. Intelligence, integrity, charisma, and confidence are some of the traits that characterize many of these leaders. Interpersonal skills, oratory skills, and conceptual skills are some of the more important skills that helped to shape their leadership style. Some of these skills go hand in hand with the traits that are essential for strong leadership. Meanwhile, the behaviors that drive these leaders include inspiring and motivating others, collaboration, having a strategic perspective and trust. Combined, these traits, skills and behaviors make for effective leadership.

To be a leader means you have to to be dependable because you have a lot of responsibilities, so people have to count on you to take care of those responsibilities. Having integrity is probably the most important trait in being a good leader because you will make the most responsible decisions and you will lead fairly. The values that I stand by is Robert Nozick ideas. I totally agree that we should do anything with our things if we worked hard to get it. Believe in whatever and what makes us happy. We shouldn’t live in a government system that takes away thing that hard working people put time and sweat to own just to make the poor happy. The biases that I have in life is that people stereotype other cultures from one experience they have occurred. Everyone is a different person, not everyone is alike. I don’t prefer only one cultural communities, I’m a people person. Leaders are human, and every human is different. Individual attributes play a large role in leadership, and can support or hurt a person’s efforts to apply their competencies to their position. The skills model identifies four individual attributes as having an influence on leadership. General cognitive ability refers to a person’s aptitude or intelligence. It is an attribute that is not thought to develop through experience, but rather as ability that grows and expands into adulthood, and then declines with age (citation needed text pg 52 p 4). Crystallized cognitive ability refers to the information and expertise that is learned over time. It helps increase our leadership potential with increasing experience. This theory is based on the premise that there are certain personality characteristics that are essential for a person to possess in order to be a leader. The main emphasis is on what the person is in terms of a constellation of personality traits. This theory searches for that set of universal leadership traits that will assure success. Numerous traits have been suggested: courage, integrity, loyalty, charisma, ambition, intelligence, honesty, clairvoyance, persistence, arrogance, health, political skill, confidence and vision.
The Trait Approach was the 1st systematic attempt to study leadership. In the 20th century it was known as the “great man” theory.
