A group of students of the class had to determine who the cheater was and it was between Charley and David. The author foreshadowed the outcome of this situation when David agreed that the students should decide who was the cheater even though he knew that this wasn’t at all in his favor. The students automatically blamed David because of his religion, again showing prejudice. For example, someone in the group of students said, “What’s the matter with you Reese, you know he [Green] cheated, we all know how Jews are like”. Them V.S Us: Similarities and differences between our society and John Wyndhams Waknuk society. The town of Waknuk has many flaws, as we can see, but our society isn't perfect, either. Just by reading John Wyndhams, " The Chrysalids" you can easily pick up on the similarities and differences that can compare to our society, but getting to read all about them without having to flip through your book one million times is so much easier. Now, lets talk about David's dream.

Another predominate lesson in the novel is, how change is possible, but quite difficult to become accustomed to. David proves this point in a conversation he shares with Uncle Axel. Since David was raised in a society where change was not an option, but instead it was mandatory for the people of Waknuk to move towards Gods true image and move away from all deviations. David and many others had a hard time going against their way of living. David admits that he is reluctant to change saying, “Moreover, I was reluctant to admit the flaw in the tidy, familiar orthodoxy I had been taught (pg 64). Similarly, Waknuk is against change and always resisted when change was an option. David reveals that change is quite difficult to become accustomed to when he states, “The place may have been called Waknuk then, anyways, Waknuk it had become; an orderly, law-abiding, God- respecting community of some hundred scattered holding, large and small” (pg 17). This shows that their town, Waknuk, had never become anything different through-out many years. Also Joseph Strorm was a very strict and rigid man who unfortunately was at a point where he and many others who lived in Waknuk were brain washed with the Bible, and Nicholson’s Repentances. Therefore change was a possible option but hard to go forward with it. In this novel it therefore teaches us how change is possible, but overall very hard to do.

When David was finally caught, he pleaded guilty, admitting that what he did was wrong. David was called to the killing of his neighbor's dog. Our client and other neighbors claimed the dog was possessed by a demon. David was told by the dog to go and kill the couple. There were some supernatural events taking place in our client's mind.

This eventually changed David so that he no longer felt that he “didn’t fit his ideal of what he should be.” David’s knowledge of his Uncle Frank’s crimes, especially the murder of Little Marie Soldier, also permanently changed his life, as after that he could no loner think about Frank in the same way. Originally, David expressed great admiration for his uncle, “the war hero,” saying that compared to his father, who was impressive, was everything that his father was “and more.” Conversely, after the revelation of Frank’s crimes, David could no longer “continue thinking” of Uncle Frank “the way he always had,” saying that the “charming, affable Uncle Frank was gone for good.” While this change was dramatic, the greatest change that irretrievably changed David’s life was the death of his once beloved Uncle Frank.

In the book The Chrysalids, it deals with vulnerability. What is vulnerability? It can arise when people are isolated, insecure and defenceless in the face of risk, shock or stress. Specifically, “The image of God” is essential in Waknuk, if you want to live well. What is “the image of God”? “The image of God” consists of one head, two eyes, one nose, one mouth, two ears, a neck, a body with proportional two arms that have five fingers, and proportional two legs that have five toes. If you’re not “the image of God” you’re very vulnerable you’ll be sent to the Badlands and suffer, there is a scarce amount of food and resources you will not live long. The characters that were defenseless were Sophie due to her six toes, David’s telepathy and Aunt Harriet desire to keep her deviate baby.

The society of Waknuk is taught to follow the laws of God and the ’Definition of Man’ for they fear the punishment that they will receive if they do not so. This fear has blinded the people of Waknuk, so much so that they cannot differentiate between right and wrong, devotion and discrimination.

He transforms from a Waknuk society member to a person who is leading an escape and battle against his former society. David has known about his telepathy for a long time, which is considered a deviation in Waknuk. He transforms into someone who is in full control of his powers and understands his telepathy for what it is. In the eyes of the Waknuk society, David is changed from normal to deviant. He then is not accepted for who he is and must run away to another land. He envisions this land as a magical place that he sees in his dreams. Instead he comes to dark, evil place called the Fringes. This is a form of transformation for David as he realizes that the world isn’t really a safe place. It is a place filled with deviations and mutants. As David journeys through his life, he becomes a trustworthy and protective person. An early example of this, is when he found out that Sophie has six toes. Instead of reporting the genetic mutation, David decided to protect Sophie's secret to keep her safe. The fact that he kept this secret reveals the change and transformation in David's overall character. He goes from being a young boy who does what he is told, to being a rebel leader for the deviant

The threat of never coming back from the war “bonded [the men] together”; however, David is further estranged from the men who are closest to him. David feels “a blind hatred of Toby” (390), he felt like “he was seeing - his life stolen before his eyes” (390). The aggressive imagery of David yet again watching someone else's life move beyond the mountainous landscape of Entremont signifies his entrapment and sense of alienation. The reader is left with an image of David stranded in the field, “immobile” (388), thinking about how “there had been a war [...] he hadn’t been in” (388) and the other events that happened “when he was alive and young” (388) which had “all been for the other men” (388). David's unmoving stance signifies his monotonous, unchanging life.

Police Brutality, the use of excessive force commonly physical, but also in forms such as: false arrest, racial profiling, surveillance abuse, sexual abuse, verbal attacks and psychological intimidation, by a police officer. This is a ruthless act and issue that continues to be a major problem for both people in law enforcement, but majorly to the public and is life threatening. It is a saddening act that jeopardizes the civil rights of citizens and the rights of people around the world. Police officers are supposed to protect citizens and have more powers than the average citizen: they have the power to arrest, seize property, and the use of deadly force if necessary. Many officers abuse those powers. In doing so you would think they would be prosecuted accordingly but “Thousands of incidents of brutality go unreported each year” (Young Communist League). Police officers have now gotten above the law it seems. Police corruption and perjury is common within the brutality. Also, police brutality a major issue and common in African Americans, people of the LBGT community, people with disabilities and other minority groups in the society.
