The Book Thief written by Markus Zusak is a novel about a young girl named Liesel living in Nazi Germany. Her whole world is turned upside down at the young age of nine when her brother dies and she is separated from her mother. This story is unique in the sense that it is not narrated by Liesel, but instead by death, giving us insight on all perspectives throughout the book. "The soldier was buried in the dirt, not far from Tommy Müller's place. It was scratched and trodden, which, to Liesel, was the whole point. Even with injury, it could still stand up." Moving back to Portsmouth has been hard. I love Hong Kong and if it were my choice I would have stayed there forever. Because I moved when I was only 9 years old, the greater part of my memories have been from Hong Kong. Although I was born in Portsmouth, Hong Kong has always felt more like my home. Having to leave the place that I associate myself with and having to leave all of my good friends has been devastating, and it still is. Despite that, I constantly remind myself that I am able to visit and see my friends throughout the year. Being able to see two of my friends from Hong Kong in New York this summer has given me the same hope that Liesel gave to Max, that everything is going to be okay. Although I fought to stay in Hong Kong during high school, I have come to accept that that isn't the case and I am thinking more positively about it. The quote about the toy soldier triggered thoughts of the pain that I am going through now. Like the soldier has been scratched and trodden, I feel as if my life, my friends, and the place that I love have been ripped away from me. But like the toy soldier, even with injury, I can still stand
