The true hero of A Raisin in the Sun is Walter, because he is able to rise above his own pride and internal conflicts to put his family’s wants and needs above his own. Walter struggles with wanting to be the man of the family throughout the play, but in the end is able to step back and do what is best for his family. From the start of the play Walter speaks of wanting to start a liquor store. In Act I Scene One Walter tells Ruth about the liquor store and tries to convince her to tell Mama about how it could be a good investment of the insurance money (Hansberry 32). Walter thinks the liquor store will be a good investment and a way to earn money for his family. Throughout the play he is fixated on this idea. While the reader may look at this and see it as a bad idea, in Walter’s mind this is a good way to earn money and start a business that will earn money to help support his family. Walter struggles in this play with not being able to make a good living to support his family. He feels as if the job he has now is lowly and only to serve another man. His pride in himself makes him want something more. “I open and close doors all day long. I drive a man around and I say, ‘Yes, sir; no, sir; very good, sir; shall I take the Drive, sir?’ Mama, that ain’t no kind of job… that ain’t nothing at all,” Walter tells mama this to explain how he feels about his job (Hansberry 73). In Act I Scene Two he tells Mama, “I want so many things that they are driving me kind of crazy… Mama--look at me,” (Hansberry 73). He then goes on to explain how he can see a future for himself and his family, but right now it is a distant dream that he feels unable to accomplish unless he can start a business like the liquor store he has in mind. His hope in opening this store is to be able to get on his feet and make enough money to where his family isn’t struggling. In Act II Scene two Walter has decided he is going to take the insurance money that Mama told him to put in the bank and invest it in the liquor store. To the reader, this is obviously the wrong decision. To Walter, though, this is something he believes is finally going to benefit his family.
