Tangerine The Essay Character:Erik Paul Fisher is a boy whose eyes are covered by goggles for Paul's supposedly bad eye sight by the solar eclipse. Paul’s brother, Erik, is part of this story and Paul knows it. I believe there is a bigger secret about Paul’s eyesight and how he lost it. Erik has a lot to do about Paul’s confidence, and his choices affect Paul because Erik and his “friends” were a bad influence to Paul and his friends. Erik makes his choice of “friends”. In the book Tangerine, Erik always has a “friend” wherever they moved to and that “friend” would always be rotten and terrible to Paul because one of Erik’s “friends” was the cause of Paul losing his eyesight. In this story there was a flashback that Paul had, “I turned around and saw Vincent Castor. He was holding a can of spray paint. Then I felt Erik grab me from behind....... Erik’s finger prying my eyelids open …show more content…
On how Paulhe acts, who his friends are, and his confidence. Erik personality and behavior takes down Paul’s confidence and that shown in the book Tangerine very well. So well, that we have to talk about Paul’s confidence. Paul’s confidence was terrible in the beginning of the book. He was a coward, troubled, and anxious little boy. He wouldn’t tell his parents that Erik was a bully. After a while in the book Paul’s confidence had grown to enrage, determined, and a little bit Fearless. He had new friends at school and his confidence grows when he stands up for Theresa when Joey gives attitude about Theresa walking him around. At the end of the book Paul’s confidence changes dramatically. Paul went from a wimpy, Troubled and Anxious little boy to a Brilliant, Cool, and Fearless boy. Paul changed seriously that he finally told the police what happened to Luis and that Arthur and Erik were the cause of it. Paul’s went from scared and afraid of Erik to standing up to Erik, his “Goons”, and His terrible and Violent
In the beginning of Tangerine Paul, doesn’t understand why he has always hated and been scared of his brother, Erik. “Why didn’t I answer the question? I used to have an answer ready for that question.(39). Paul started questioning himself even though he had a story. He didn’t understand why he started to question his story. However later in the story, he starts to remember his story. “I remembered Castor. Vincent Castor… I remembered spray paint on that wall. Erik and Vincent Castor had found a can of white spray paint, and they had painted something… ‘You’re gonna pay for telling on Castor.’”(263). As soon as Paul starts remembering he, finally, starts to understand, see, why. Why he has always been scared, hated and not wanted to confront Erik. He is finally able to uncover truth about himself, and he feels different, happy and brave, now that he
They hate each other so much! Paul is an innocent soccer player whose brother hates him so much that he would do anything to see his little brother get hurt. Between Erik, his football body guards, and Paul and his soccer cronies; things can get very bad very quickly! In part 1 on page 42 of Tangerine, it states,” I’ve always been afraid of Erik. Now I get to be afraid to Erik and Arthur.”
Have you ever made a choice before? Chances are you have, and the people in the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor are no exception. The novel is about Paul Fisher, a kid with thick glasses, and the adventures he has in his new home in Tangerine florida. Even though Paul himself makes many choices, today were focusing on the choices made by his mother(Mrs.Fisher) and how they affect Paul. Mrs.Fisher often makes major choices that will affect Paul immensely, without Pauls consent or opinion.
He said to his parents, “let me ask you one thing, mom. When you got home from the hospital that day did you see the white paint on Eric’s hands?” Then she said yes, and he got told that they did know the reason of being blind was from the paint that Eric had sprayed into his eyes. Paul was furious and he will now forever pay for what Eric has done to him. Paul then developed and had the courage to tell everyone that Eric was the one to kill Luis and steal all of the things from the houses.
and Mrs. Fisher. Case in point, Paul finds his voice and stands-up to his brother, Erik, and Erik’s friend, Arthur. “ I stepped forward…. Erik. Come on”(261). Furthermore, a second altercation happens when Paul confronts his parents about his eyesight. “I exploded… Am I that idiot”(264). This evidence reveals the beginning of the resolution because throughout the whole novel, the main character, Paul Fisher, has been quiet and shy about his internal ideas, or thoughts. Paul finally gets enough courage to stand- up to his brother and
As a result of this Paul feels secondary to Eric because Eric gets more attention from Mom and Dad. In page 289 it said,”When we moved to Houston, when Erik was eleven, he realized football was the star attraction.” From this evidence, we see that Paul feels less important to his family. Additionally, we can see that Paul is being ignored, almost to the point where he is abandoned. This helps Paul build his character because he tumbles down, losing more than his
One of the cruelest things Erik did in the book was damage Paul’s eyesight. Because of what Erik did, it ruined Paul’s child/teen hood. He couldn’t play on the Lake Windsor soccer team, he got called mean names, and he was seen as “handicapped” by people including his mom. This just shows how much of a sick person Erik is. Erik may be cruel, but Paul is very compassionate. He enjoys helping people. In the story, Paul helped Luis Cruz with his tangerine business. Even though Paul didn’t have to, he chose to fight the freeze and try to save the tangerines with Luis and his family. Paul may have gotten sick and had problems during the freeze, but he fought through it to be with his friends. Based on that, you know that Paul is a true
As he experiences different events, Paul begins revealing more of himself in his eyes. At first, because of his eyesight, he sees himself in a very negative light, “I could stop trying to be what everyone else and and accept being a freak.”(76) Paul’s view in the beginning, like everyone else’s in this story, is clouded. His view of himself affects his confidence and how timid he acts. As the story continues, he sees everything in a new light, “I feel like Luis is part of me now. I feel like a different person.”(252) Seeing this brave and new self, Paul sees the the world as a much brighter, clearer place. His development gives him new courage to stand up to his biggest fears. All of these experiences gives Paul new light to what's around
This evidence shows that Paul no longer has to be scared of Erik if he could find the courage that Luis had to stand up against Erik and that he also has people who will stand with him. Next, when Paul first moved to Tangerine that is all bad and gloomy with many problems, after a year it seems to be clean and fresh with all the problems resolved and all of the truth figured out. “The air was clear and cold. And the car and immediately filled up with that scent, the scent of Golden Dawn”(303). This example shows that ever since Paul moved to Tangerine County there's been problems with his family, school, neighborhood, and Friends.
After confronting Erik, Paul finally bursts. All of the police are at Paul’s house, and he tells the police about Luis Cruz, saying “I saw- I heard Erik Fisher tell him to do it.” (284) Paul let go of all of his fear right then. His fear to let others, mostly Erik, gain power because of him.For once in his life, Erik is going to get what he
The choice affected Paul because Tino was good friend and Paul didn’t want to lose his friendship with Tino. Then soon enough Tino told his older brother, Luis and then Luis confronted Erik about it and Erik hit Luis with the blackjack he had. “Which one is Erik Fisher? He looked at Erik. Is that you?”
Erik’s choices have taught me and others that Erik doesn’t think about the choices he makes and how they affect people. He only cares about himself and his dreams. If Erik doesn’t have his way he forces his way. This is a good thing to remember because you may have a friend or a person you know like this. Instead of running away from them if your scared, you could teach that person the effects of your choices about yourself or somebody else. This is important because this happens in everyday life and you need to not just focus on yourself, but on others and to watch what your choices can do in the
With this choice having been made, Paul’s friendships are damaged. The instance in which Erik hits Tino is on page 205, “Immediately, faster than I thought he could, faster than Tino thought he could, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino’s face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass.” The effect of this act of violence is that Paul’s friends begin to associate Paul with Erik together being on similar terms. Presumably on the premise that they are brothers and Paul did nothing to stop Erik. In order to mend his relationship with his friends (Particularly Tino), Paul learns how to improve his friendships by helping each other and gaining one another’s
In the end paul remembers that erik put paint on paul's eyes that why paul is blind.Paul went to new middle school st anthony. Luis Cruz died because arthur killer luis. Mr.fisher take him to his new school.
Afterward, Paul reveals to the police that Erik and Arthur were involved in the death of Luis Cruz. On page 211 of Tangerine it states, “Arthur reached Luis, turned, and whipped the blackjack around with a loud whack against the side of Luis’s head.” Paul’s close friend Luis was smacked across the head with a blackjack by Erik and this caused Luis to have an aneurysm. Luis was smacked on the head because Erik had hit Tino, Luis’ brother in the face with a blackjack, so Luis got involved, and confronted Erik and Arthur. Paul is devastated because the aneurysm sadly caused Luis’ death. Luis was very helpful to Paul and seeing him dead made Paul despondent. Also pages 244-245 states, “Luis Cruz is dead...I raised my hand and got Ms. Polland’s attention. I said, “I gotta go. I’m sick again.” Luis’ death made Paul sick to his stomach because first, they were close friends because he was kind of like an older brother to Paul. Also, Paul knows that Arthur and Erik are involved in the
