At some point in life everyone copy's someone because they're either lost and don't know what tondo or because they feel that it's necessary to do so.
Henry fought along side with the other soldiers in the first battle because they all put up a fight and didn't look scared or even a little frightened by the opposing soldiers. Henry ran during the second battle because he saw all the other solider who were around him starting to run. If they weren't scared from the first battle than they shouldn't have been scared of the second one, unless they knew something bad was going to happen or they were going to loose. He didn't want to run because he didn't was to be labeled a coward and become a pariah in his regiment.
Henry fled from the second battle because he did not fully understand the responsibility of being at war. He was just a boy trying to do what’s right. Angst and inner conflict welled within his conscience from participating in the first battle, but the lieutenant of his regiment filled his and his comrades’ spirit full of false security and bravery, making the first battle easier to bear.
Henry fights along with the other soldiers in the first battle, yet he flees from the scene when the second battle ensues. Henry had a confusing opinion about the battles being fought. He believed that the first battle was a sure fire win and that the second battle was a complicated one to win. The battles were both very different.
But in the second battle Henry flees from his comrades while they held the line as the rebels tried to push them out. The regiment ended up being the victors of the second battle too. But Henry was worried about what the other soldiers would say to him since he ran away from the battle. I believe Henry was always afraid of battle even before it started and when the enemy came sprinting towards him he was shocked and started to flee.
He is still a boy, however, he is old enough to be in the military. He was chosen to be a doctor for the union. He scrambles across the field during the battle of Vicksburg. He is looking for the fallen soldiers who need a medic. He has already seen too much gore during this battle. Whenever he goes out looking for someone he never knows if he is going to be shot at. He knows that the Confederate army has a strategy where they shoot the doctors so the soldiers cannot go back into the battle. He had seen many horrors on the battlefield that he would never forget. One time during an amputation, he got so scared he froze up and could not help the other doctor. From that day forward, he no longer amputates the men in agony. Though he was always

He remembered what his mother said before he left and wanted to see her again. He might have thought that if he didn't flee he wouldn't have a wife or kids or a family later on in life.

When the second battle happens, Henry flees the battle with the other men. He flees with the other men because he knows that they wont win the battle, since they were not prepared for it. There were also other reasons why Henry fought in the first battle.

Paul is a hopeless, brave, caring soldier who is still trying to figure out who he is.
In the story All Quiet on the Western Front, the protagonist Paul Bämer experiences multiple characteristic changes while experiencing life from another point of view during his service at the front. While living with his comrades at the front, Paul experiences changes of his attitude towards death due to brutal warfare, dehumanization of himself and his comrade’s, and development of friendship with his comrades.
Humanity is the state of being humane, just, and beneficial to humans as a whole. Having a sense of humanity during trying times is crucial and can either make or break the situation. In the novels Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis De Bernières and All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, characters perform acts that allow them to progress through hard times. The characters demonstrate that they want not only a future for themselves but also a future for others, even if they are enemies. By having a sense of humanity they realize that in the end they are all human and where they live and who they fight for does not matter.
World War one was a war of severe tribulation. resulting in over 50 million deaths, it was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Known as the “Western Front”, the border of Germany and France was the site to some of the bloodiest battles of the war. There are very few novels that truly exemplify the events that took place along this front. Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Displays important themes, imagery, and symbolism, that help show how this great war affected the soldiers, the countries involved and the world.

Both books have been critically-acclaimed as great literature on the First World War.
‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ by Erich Maria Remarque follows the voyage of the protagonist and narrator, Paul Baumer, who is a nineteen year old man fighting for the German army in the front lines in World War I. Baumer joins the war voluntarily with a group of friends after repeatedly listening to the patriotic speeches from their teacher. When the men first join they are innocent and young, but as the novel progresses they become old men in a young man’s body. Throughout the novel each character dramatically changes and loses their identity in different ways

During the second battle, Henry ran. He didn't run just to run, he ran in fear. Henry saw soldiers running through smoke in the field so he also decided to run. Just think, if you were sitting there watching soldiers run, wouldn't you follow them? If Henry decided not to flee, he could've been there all alone and open to danger. The enemies could've easily been right there with him.
