Germany betrayed Paul Baumer and his comrades. All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of Paul Baumer, an enlistee in the German army during World War One. He enlisted as a teenager after a push from his schoolteacher to fight for his country. Paul and his fellow comrades experience the horrors of war as they are told to kill and lay down their lives for their country. Paul goes through battles, injuries, the loss of friends and comrades, and he inevitably loses his life.

Their prewar lives have ceased to mean anything since they can no longer imagine a peacetime existence. Paul’s comparison of the war to disease reflects an attack on the romantic ideals of warfare. Until now, he and his friends have avoided allowing the disease of war to infect them. At this point, however, the sickness is creeping into their minds and souls because it is becoming their only existence. Instead of being concerned, Paul and the others worry about who will get Kemmerich’s boots, “But as it is the boots are quite inappropriate to Kemmerich’s circumstances, whereas Muller can make good use of them” (Remarque 21). Furthermore the death of a fellow soldier doesn’t affect Paul and the others since they show no sympathy instead they are egoistic and obsessed with who will get the boots. Paul’s tone demonstrates that he no longer cares for his buddies but rather focus on his own selfish desires. Paul’s emotions have vanished and he believes that the boots are “inappropriate to Kemmerich’s circumstances”.
