The reality of the phrase “learn from your mistakes” is one that is not often recognized. When looking at the ancient history of the world, it is remarkable to notice the advancements of specific societies, such as the Mayans and the Incans, have created. Not all advancements were progressive, however. Some set the world back and made it difficult to recover from. Yet without these failures, it’d be harder to appreciate the successes that have been accomplished. Ancient history gives the new generation the privilege to take the current problems of today, and solve them efficiently while providing concrete evidence as to how similar problems were solved. The study of ancient societies, such as the Mayas and the Incans, proves to be significant …show more content…
Scientific studies have proven that the earth’s climate is increasing and claim that humans are the blame as their activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels affect the earth. Nearly two weeks ago, the United States had one of its most important days of the year: Election day. The vote came down to Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and now, President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump. Before Trump won the election, one of the most controversial issues he and Clinton argued upon was on climate change. Rebecca Harrington of Business Insider writes that Clinton said, “Some country is going to be the clean- energy superpower of the 21st century. Donald thinks that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. I think it's real.” Harrington then adds that Trump responded by saying, “I did not. I did not. I do not say that.” The article continues and explains that Trump “does not accept the overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is real.” Hillary on the contrary, according to writers Steven Mufson and Brady Dennis, “had been adamant that she would follow through on the promises Obama made under the Paris climate accord, and vowed to defend and implement the Clean Power Plan and reduce the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions by nearly a third by 2025, relative to 2005 levels.” This issue is very relevant in today’s …show more content…
Many environmental activists felt that Trump’s win was a loss for all that they’ve been fighting for. Steven Mufson and Brady Dennis write the response of Bill McKibben, founder of the climate action group 350.org, when asked how the environmental movement would deal with President Trump. “-I think it’s clear that he wants no part of environmental progress, and I imagine the damage from this election will be measured in geologic time. We will do what we can, but truthfully the path forward is not all that clear to me.” By studying the history of ancient civilizations, students can compare this particular issue to ones similar and try to predict what’s to come of Trump’s
Climate change is now being seen as the top global threat and the scariest and biggest additional problem that comes with this truth is that our future President, Donald Trump, doesn’t believe it is real and denies that it is happening. Our President-elect, who will be inaugurated on January 20th, 2017, has made remarks that he does not accept the scientific evidence that climate change is real. This is a surprising comment considering that it is a well-known fact that “97 percent of scientific experts agree that human-caused climate change is real”. It was also revealed that on his campaign website he has nothing about the environment, this means, as of now, he has no plan to improve or combat the global warming/climate change issue. In reply to a question about his position on climate change on ScienceDebate, Trump implied that the U.S
Climate change is one of today’s most hotly debated topic. Scientists for many decades have made supposed claims that current energy creation and reliance on fossil fuels will lead to inevitable changes to the planet. Today, climate change denial is still a popular to most of the world despite the mounds of evidence to support that it exists. The climate change issue suffers from being mismanaged by various parties through focusing on the wrong issues and the lack of true commitment from the general public, according to Sandra Steingraber.
The most straightforward: take environmental problems seriously. They destroyed societies in the past , and they are even more likely to do so now. In 6,000 Polynesians with stone tools were able to destroy Mangareva Islands, consider what six billion people with metal tools and bulldozers are doing today. Moreover, while the Maya collapse affected just a few neighboring societies in Central America, globalization now means that any society’s problems have the potential to affect anyone else. Just think how crises in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq have shaped the United States today.
Many ancient civilizations have changed the way we live today. Sumerians invented the first language, Hammurabi invented the first set of laws, Egyptians created pyramids, and so many other ways that ancient people made the building blocks of the way our society lives today. It amazes me how God gave us brains to figure out ways to make life so much easier!
The election of 2000 took place during a time that was mostly peaceful, unemployment rates were historically low, but however, there were a record number of terrorist threats (Muhlhausen). Despite all of these headlining topics presidential candidate Al Gore and Vice President Joe Lieberman were far more concerned about global climate change (“Al”). Gore was, and still, is very passionate about this topic (“Al”, 9). He has challenged the two biggest polluters in the world, China and The United States to, “Make the boldest move in climate change.” Figure 5
On November 8th, American citizens will go to the polls and vote for the next president of the United States. During the presidential campaign, both candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, have their own different points of view on environmental issues. Hillary Clinton affirms her commitment to the fight against climate change. She supports the Paris Agreement, which is an agreement among many nations to respond to the threat of global warming and to reverse the worst effects of climate change. Donald Trump, by contrast, does not believe that the shift in the climate is a manmade disaster. He claims that global warming just is a hoax and current global warming is just a part of a natural cycle that is naturally occurring. Donald Trump, then, promises to dismantle the agreement if he becomes the U.S. President. It is important to note that many people and scientists share this same belief with Trump, protesting that global warming is a natural phenomenon. The debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump raises an important issue. Are people primary responsible for global warming? Global warming is due to many reasons; specifically, human activities are the major factors causing the planet to get gradually warmer over time.
These last two election cycles have demonstrated the importance of climate change in relation to politics and the american people. What is unfortunate is that what seems to be a very crucial and real problem in our human survival, according to scientists, is being debated by people who do not have the scientific credentials to even discuss the science behind the reality of climate change. Those behind the skeptics, have funded a successful campaign against the reality of the facts and have introduce doubt into the sciences.
There are 7.3 billion people on Earth (United States Census Bureau, 2016). More specifically, there are 7.3 billion people who depend on Earth for food, water, and shelter. If there is one thing that every living organism has in common, it’s our dependence on the planet to survive. Unfortunately, since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been systematically degrading the Earth and its resources. President Obama’s final State of the Union address was structured around four main points, one of which was centered around innovation (2016). His points focused on the impending reality of climate change and America’s potential to lead the world down a path of sustainability and green innovation. His hour long speech devoted a mere five minutes to climate issues, further suggesting that climate change remains a less pressing issue than the economy, for example, and I felt that he oversimplified an incredibly complex issue. President Obama’s economic appeals paint a hopeful picture without acknowledging the potential pitfalls associated with climate capitalism. However, President Obama’s strong stance claiming that climate change is in fact happening is an incredibly positive step in the fight against climate change.
Climate change, a global scale challenge that is most important due to its present and long-term dangers, deserves not only much discussion, but attention as well. In particular, one former president who wanted to fight this challenge head on was Al Gore. When speaking to this challenge, former President Al Gore stated, “It is wrong to use the sky as an open sewer, it is wrong to condemn future generations to a lifetime haunted by continual declines in their standard of living, and give them a world of political disruption and all the chaos that scientists have warned us about” (Carrington 2017). To put it differently, Al Gore is simply implying that climate change is the leading force of great destruction to come. For this reason, Al Gore
The world around us is constantly evolving; decisions are made, technology is produced, and nature takes its toll. Human evolution has influenced the development of the earth we inhabit. Quite literally, the human race has coincided and coexisted with the shaping of the world. The human impact has been both helpful and detrimental to the well being of the earth, and in recent times we have been faced with helping preserve the world’s natural resources. Valuing climate change and global warming has become quite highlighted in the media, as it has become politically debated and blungeoned in light of the recent presidential election of Donald Trump. According to the media, President Donald Trump and many of his selected cabinet members do not
Because of the most recent election season, there has been a renewed interest in the topic of climate change. In the 2016 Presidential election, the green party received over 1.2 million popular votes nationwide, when they usually receive only 100 thousand or so. With an increased interest in the topic of climate change, I feel it is necessary to provide factual data and projections on the path climate change will take to decrease misinformation. I proclaim the correct course of action to solve the problem of climate change is to do nothing.
Global Warming has been highly accepted as an inconvenient truth that if not resolved, will have serious consequences for the future of the human race. Recently, however, America’s newest president, Donald Trump, has openly coined Global Warming as a “hoax”. Therefore, Trump has pulled the United States out of an agreement made between numerous countries to make actions to lower carbon emissions. This agreement is called the Paris Accord. President Trump’s decision to pull the United States of America out of the Paris Accord Agreement has sparked many discussions on how just his actions were and how valid the agreement really is. A surplus of news organizations have provided their opinions on the matter as well as all the facts associated with it.
Michael Greshko, a freelance science writer, wrote the global danger of trump’s climate denial. A part from his master degree in science writing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he also has a bachelor degree in biology from Vanderbilt University. According to Greshko, Donald Trump’s surprising victory in the U.S presidential election will ignite a dramatic change to U.S. environmental policy. The article states that climate change is real, the majority of scientists believe that, but the elected president Donald Trump does not buy the idea. The most important elements in climate descriptions are temperature and precipitation because they have the greatest influence on people and their activities, and they also have
Even though there is evidence proving that the increasing danger of climate change and global warming is a threat to all life, anti-believers argue that although 2014 was deemed the hottest year on record, the year saw record snow and cold in all four hemispheres. Additionally, oceans are rising much less than predicted. In 2005, Al Gore predicted that oceans would rise 20 feet by 2100. However, 80% of the tide gauges show less rise than the official “global average”. In fact, many tide gauges show no rise in sea level, and almost none show any acceleration over the past 20 years (Top Ten Reasons). These statistics accurately represent how torn many are on the subject of climate change. Although there are great points to be made on each side, it is always better to be safe than sorry, and the fight against climate change, believe or not, should be in the back of one’s mind at all
Period of time in which complex civilizations expanded to establish large land empires and were more interconnected through trade than earlier civilizations. These civilizations made great contributions to our collective learning as a result of golden ages marked by prosperity. Most of the major belief systems that still impact our world were established during this time.
