Changes During Early Childhood Development

In this writing it will be discussing childhood development, as well as some vital issues that might come along during those stages of development. Child development consist of the stage where the child is developing physically, cognitively, socially and spiritually. During these stages of development a child is maturing from infancy to becoming a young adult. For many years theorist such as Sigmund Freud, Erik Erikson, and Lev Vygotsky’s have researched how children mature from infants to adulthood. Each of the theorist have profound facts to how children develop, but which of the three men are correct on their findings?

The infants physical development starts with the head and then moves to other parts of the body. From the very beginning babies are very curious and are ready to start exploring. Infants necks are unable to support the weight of the head when the baby is sat up straight. They are able to turn their heads left to right when laying down. Infants are able to close their fist.

Children are complex, and the way a child develops differs from individual to individual. The study of children is a field that researchers, scientists, theorists and educators have been exploring for decades. CHYS 1F90 studies the foundations of childhood development and allows the students to look at the way children develop through multiple lenses. Throughout the course of the human lifespan, the period of most rapid development extends through infancy and early childhood. The early stages of development that occur during this time set the stage upon which further and more specific aspects of development will occur. There are many different external and internal components which influence and guide development during this time. These components include the individual’s family, including more specific parenting styles, as well as early education and the individual’s social environment. Each of these various aspects of development plays a critical and widespread role in these initial stages of development.

Nowadays, more and more children have obesity compare to the children in thirty years ago. The research showed that children who have obesity in their early age may cause either short-term or long-term consequence. The short-term consequence for the obesity children include low self-esteem and the long-term consequence includes asthma and heart disease. (CDC) The best way to prevent these is to encourage children do at least one hour physical exercise a day within the trained instructor guided. ( Epstein 2014) My paper is mainly focused on how my curriculum promote physical development in a child care center.

Chapter 5 “Early Childhood: Body and Mind” section “Thinking during Early Childhood” teaches about the cognitive development of children during early childhood at around ages 2-6 years old, in which, children targeted at this age do not use logical operations (reasoning process). Such a term is called the “Preoperational Intelligence” conducted by Piaget. Furthermore, Piaget’s preoperational thought establishes that children have language but use symbolic thought where “words can refer to things not seen and that an item, like a flag, can symbolize something else (in this case, a country).” Symbolic thought proves Animism; the belief that young children have thinking that “natural objects are alive and nonhuman animals have the same characteristics of a child” (Berger, 173).

The early childhood field have impact many different roles in History. During world war 2 many women were called to the war. This is when the need for child care increase, during 1976 and 1998 many parents were working, so that make the need for child care. Day care became a site of patriotism for many American. Many centers provided working parents with the security that their children would be safe while they at worked.

Another important factor of an infant’s development is their cognitive development. Cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses. The infant’s cognitive development can be assessed through measuring the five senses (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). The baby’s senses start to develop in the womb and get better as they develop.

There are many ways a parents can affect an early childhood child psychosocial. During this time is crucial for the child not to receive a lot of stress from the parents because their brain is still developing. Extreme stress from the parents may cause cortisol to flood the brain. When there is too much cortisol in the brain parts of the hippocampus get destroyed. The hippocampus is in charge of memory, so the child will for sure suffer memory loss in the future. The hypothalamus will also be affected. The hypothalamus is in charge of emotion. Any child who experiences high levels of stress and lack a nurturing parent are at a high risk of having regulated emotions. The hormone production is caused by parental responses. Too much of the hormone early in life and the child will have major depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder.

Throughout life, we as humans are continually developing and our cognitive, physical and behavioural conditions may change as we go through different stages of our life. As future Oral Health Therapists, this is especially important to recognize as our career serves people of all ages and it is important to be able to understand the characteristics and stages of human development in order to practice effectively. This report aims to aid in the management of early childhood and adolescent patients through the explanation of their cognitive, behavioural/social and physical development through the use of (INSERT THEORISTS HERE) theories. This will be done in two main parts, which will both include the cognitive, behavioural and physical changes of both a five year old patient and a fifteen-year-old patient. It will also give rise to some important milestones for these age groups and why this can have an impact on patients opinions…. And behaviours exhibited in a clinical condition and their general oral health.
