This book talked about the evolution of medicine over time. Covering many topics, the people and ideas in this book constantly changed. There were ten sections of this book, eight of them discussing different medical advances. These eight sections are titled Ice, Fire, Heart, Trauma, Intensive Care, Water, Orbit, and Mars. The sections, or chapters, titled “Ice” talks about hypothermia and how it changed from a deadly and hard to treat condition to something doctors induce to aid in other medical treatments. “Fire” talks about how treatment for extreme burns has drastically improved as has the survival rate from the burns. “Heart” as you can guess, is about the heart and how originally scientists and doctors alike believed that surgery on the heart was impossible and how now doctors have the ability to perform many types of cardiac surgery. The chapter “Trauma” refers to the low life expectancy of people with severe trauma and how technology has improved to help save more trauma patients. “Intensive Care” explains the spread of diseases and how, through time, doctors have realized how to prevent mass plagues through proper prevention and hygiene. The section chartered “Water” describes the changing adaptations of divers to reach lower depths for longer periods of time. This helps explain how the body functions without oxygen. “Orbit” details the effects of space travel on the human body and how we can be more prepared for it from prior aerospace experience. …show more content…

As technology improves, research and the knowledge we can have on different subjects does as well. Doctors become better at saving lives if they have more advanced tools just like astronauts and scientists will have a higher success rates in space if they have prior space experiences to work off of and learn from.
