This talk brought so many thoughts to mind, memory flashbacks, and also got my wheels turning about how much this applies to children at different developmental levels, and those who are delayed due to a disability of some sort. The thought that "Kids do well if they can" and not following it up with "They are not doing well because they are lazy" is very important and is something that should be applied every day with every student, especially those who seem to be struggling with something constantly. Taking the time to address the issue, be empathetic, let them know that you understand, share with them your concern, and then allow them to find a solution to their problem. This is an important collaboration to have with students who are struggling with problem solving, flexibility, and controlling frustration. This is something that I have had a lot of experiences with, personally, as a mother, and in many observations and professional interactions, but more so with my children when it comes to challenging behaviors. Rewards systems do not always work, and this is important to remember as a teacher. For a child who is struggling with a challenging behavior, we have to remember that "If a child can they will" and "If a child cannot, what is happening". Look at the patterns, the situations, the individuals involved, and approach the student in need in a way that is focused on collaborating with the student will help more than pointing out what they are doing wrong and how they can fix it. Collaborating will take time. But you have to take the time to develop this skill in children that it does not come easily to. It is a process, and it should not be
