Coming to America was very scary and dangerous. Children had to leave their leave moms and dad and ride on boats alone. They faced many challenges such as sickness. People on the boat got sea sick or got the flu. They were contagious so they gave it to others. The sea was rough, some boats never made it to the New World. Many people died on the way to the New World. They survived on very little food and water they could only store as much as what would fit on the boat. They couldn’t drink sea water because it would dehydrate them even more and when they got to America they would have to find money to get a house and food. Life was very difficult because parents had to find a job. By the time some of the kids reached the New World the parents
But, in order to get here, they had to go through the voyage. It was full of dreadful conditions, from eating “old and sharply-salted food and meat” to disease and death at a high rate. He explains that some women had to die because they, “could not give birth under the circumstances, was pushed through a loophole (porthole) in the ship and dropped into the sea.” This was horrible but that’s not it, children had to see their parents die or vice versa. These conditions explain that coming to the American colonies was not that simple but rather difficult due to the horrifying conditions one had to face during the voyage and then when they had
For some the hardest part of their journey was arriving at the port. Many had to wait for paperwork, or had to travel long distances just to get to the port. This paperwork consisted of 31 questions of personal intent. Then they were finally led to the ship or maybe cargo ship and then to steerage where they were then transported to America. Steerage was the hardest part for some passengers because of the dark crowded spaces and the cold bitterness. Once on board of the boat or cargo ship there were three types of passengers, first class, second class, and third class. First and second class did not need to go through any form of customs or check out they just boarded and exited into New York. Third class passengers were not as fortunate and had to be inspected and registered into Ellis Island. During the boat ride the passengers played cards talked and learned the new language. Before these passengers left the ship medical examiners came onto the boat and checked everyone for diseases and personnel. After the immigrant exited the boat he approached a customs officer to be checked, after that they went to the money station where any foreign money you had could be exchanged for American money. From there on most immigrants were on their own and had to find a way out of Ellis Island and New
Many helpless African Americans lives were torn out by the beatings but they also died on this un real voyage from sickness because of the new air and diseases they weren't used to from this world and malnutrition. Many lives were gone when reached on shore about 13 to 15 % died from the voyage
The early British colonists risked it all for a new life and religion scared for their life as they sailed to the New World. “After they had enjoyed fair winds and weather for a season, they were encountered many times with cross winds and met with many fierce storms with which the ship was shroudly shaken, and her upper works leaky; and one of the main beams in the mid-ships was bowed and cracked, which put them in some fear that the ship could not be able to perform the voyage.”(Bradford pg.78). As quoted by William Bradford, how as they sailed it was smooth at first ,but then things changed for example the weather the people aboard the mayflower were not expecting such harsh weather.
Even though it hasn’t been a long time since our family has moved to America, it feels like a lifetime ago. I can barely remember the days of walking around barefoot and only having a small piece of bread to eat, while here everyone has shoes to wear and eats pasta multiple times a week. How my life has changed in such a short time. Everyone and everything moves at such fast pace here, if one blinks they can miss a lifetime. Back in Sicily, the days drug on while everyone went through the motions of their days on the farm. There are many differences between Sicily and here in America, but the first time I laid my eyes on the Statue of Liberty, I knew I was meant to be an American.
The taking of Africans and the transportation to the “New World” is called the Middle Passage. This was the most cruel and tortuous trip anyone could imagine. Africans would be forced to march up to one thousand miles to the coast line. There was a fifty percent survival on this march. Once on the ships the slaves would be bound together, made to lie side by side. Disease was rampant aboard the ships, because of the vomit, feces and death. If you were fortunate enough you would receive two meals a day which would include rice beans and maybe a piece of meat. Slaves were forced to exercise so they would appear to be healthy when
While traveling to the New World, the colonists took extreme dangerous risks to get here. They fought strong storms, which caused some of them to drown and get buried at sea. When the colonists got sick, some caught more
There are events in life, which can change yourself or your way of thinking. As for me, I think the major change in my life occurred when I moved from France to America. This change has entirely affected my personality. Why? I arrived in the United States during the summer of 2002. It was really hard for me since my parents had only told me about the move in April of that year. Therefore, I did not have the time to prepare myself psychologically. My parents had talked about coming here for a very long time, even before I was born. Everything started in 1973. Indeed, my parents came from Iran to Europe in order to finish their studies and then to return back home. However, even at that time, they had not set their mind as to where they
The first time I’ve met my parents was when I was five. When they approached me at the airport, I did not know who they were. When I found out that they were my parents, I did not know how to react — I was excited, but also scared. Standing in front of me were two people whom I listened to the voices of for the past five years and spoke casually with on the phone, but meeting them in person was a whole different story.

Life is about making choices, but some of them can even change our life. Two years ago I decided to come to America for my higher studies in Western Kentucky University. Although I knew it was really a challenge to me, this significant decision that I’ve made was going to change everything about my life and me. There are many things in life that can change the course of a person’s life. It can either make a positive impact or a negative impact on a person’s life. It’s always best to have the positive impact though. For me I have had a positive experience that has changed my life forever and that is coming to a different land and culture.
Transitions are never an easy thing to conquer. It is often hard and stressful to cope with changes to one’s surrounding, but in the cases in which one manages to conquer this obstacle, elevation of knowledge and experience are great results gained from this achievement. I originally came from Africa and recently moved to the United States to join my mother and my step father. This great change in the things I had become accustomed to in my daily life was not easy, furthermore taking into account the fact that I had never experienced a transition so little as shifting from one residence to another.
One thing was certain - I could count on was the advice of my family. Coming from a closely knit community, family support was a surety. They provided the support needed to my many cousins who embarked on this journey before me. No matter what doors being a Hamptonian was about to open, I could never forget them. Their sheer determination to see me succeed at anything I put my mind to provided me with enough motivation for the mission.
There are many significant parts of my life that have had a huge impact on my personality, but there is one that has not only affected me, but has changed me for the better. My personal life changing experience was coming to America. For me, this bridge between my old life and new life is a shaky bridge that I attempted to cross and entered a whole new realm of life which changed everything. The decision about coming to America has taught me how to respect other people, be more responsible, and be more loving towards various friends and families. It has also helped me adapt to the new life that I’m about to begin. It was so unexpected. Out of nowhere my parents broke the news: “We’re going to America!” Living in a big town of Bhopal,
The journey from the docks of Liverpool to the harbors of Ellis Island was extremely dangerous and unhealthy for the passengers. The treatment was poor with minimal facilities. Often, families would be able to buy tickets with the money their relatives sent from the U.S. Once they had the money, they would go to Liverpool, England to board on the ships. Usually, they would spend about 24 to 36 hours packed on the decks of cargo ships and unsheltered from the weather to arrive to Liverpool. From Liverpool, they board for Pennsylvania, New York, and Boston. The ships that carried the immigrants were called “coffin ships” because many grew sick of cholera and died on the ship. The death rates were approximately 5-12%. For the journey, some passengers brought food such as a sack of potatoes. Often there was not much space to walk around, enjoy the breeze, breath fresh air, or get some sunlight. They were all packed below the deck and away from the ship’s crew to prevent the spread of diseases. Usually the captains and companies were dishonest and promised great care for the long journey to make more money. Unfortunately, there were few legislation passed that fulfilled the bare necessities for the passengers on board.
