Immigrants into Italy and the United States have more in common than one might think. Both are fleeing poverty, both have been excluded from full citizenship for political reasons and both experience very similar lives because of that exclusion. The struggle for citizenship is an inherent struggle of the modern UFW. The lack of a working immigration system has put the UFW in the situation it is in today, and meaningful immigration reform will directly benefit the union going into the future. Real families in both the United States and Italy are experiencing the effects of a broken immigration system. This is an issue that needs to be addressed.

My grandmother's name is Maria Fazio. She’s very thin and short. You can tell she had worked hard her whole life. She grew up being one of five siblings and lived with her two parents. Today she is 72 and lives in berkeley but 63 years ago she was just a little girl living on a ranch in Mexico. She used to be a little girl who restocked the shelves in her parents store. Today she is strong and powerful. She puts everything into what she is doing and never gives up. I have never known her to quit, to give up, or to do things the easy way. I remember one time when I was really little she worked three jobs just to help me and my mom out. On top of her three jobs she used to take care of me while my mom was at work. She used to make my mother and I lunch and dinner every day. It was like she never ran out of energy or never wanted to give up.
