My passion for medicine continues to grow with each patient that I’ve had the privilege of caring for through shadowing, volunteering and my job as a CNA. Being my grandma’s translator has inspired me to pursue a career as a physician assistant, and beyond becoming a physician assistant, I aspire to practice in underserved populations so that everyone has an equal opportunity to access the health care they need.

After I graduate I plan on attending National Park College for their RN to BSN degree program. I wish to do that and gain some field experience before I go back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner has always been a dream of mine and each day I get closer. To stay close to home to attend National Park for the first part of my goals is a definite plus. I would like to become a DNP Family Nurse Practitioner. The requirements I will need for this degree will be RN licensure, followed by a BSN program, then a Nurse Practitioner doctorate program in family medicine. The road that will take me to this goal will be graduating Columbia Basin College with an ADN, take and pass the NCLEX, followed by one year of clinical experience. My second professional goal being long-term in is to go from a registered nurse (RN) level II to a level III RN. The hospital that I work for offers room for advancement through a three level tier program. Starting with my basic RN license, moving toward level II and then onto level III, each advancement comes through educational and specified guidelines established by the hospital and set forth in a hospital policy. Prior to going back to school I was able to attain my level II status. However, the requirements for a level III require the achievement of a Bachelor’s degree and certification in a specialized field. This means acquiring a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certificate. I anticipate my graduation from the BSN program to be in May 2012 and then giving me six months to study for and mastering the CEN test. At that time I will obtain an updated copy of the policy and requirements and revisit the application process to becoming a level III RN. Things I can do to research to assist me with my transition from an entry level position to a more advanced position is always going to be school. I have been an LPN since 2007 where I have spent 9 years in the Emergency Department at Welch Community Hospital. I have absorbed a great deal of knowledge in the time I have worked, in addition will continue to endure more information daily. I want to be an Advanced Practice Nurse. I complete similar work every day so I thought to myself, why not get the certification for it? As I called medical doctors and physicians assistants about sick patients, I found myself suggesting and telling them what orders the patient needs. I was struck with a sudden realization; I needed to go back to school.

Because of my mother’s and sister’s involvement in the medical field, I have gained a personal connection with wanting to continue in their footsteps. I am going to attend The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to pursue my career as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I would like to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in order to provide the best care for small children. I recently obtained my Certified Patient Care Technician certification while in high school, which means I am certified to work in a hospital. I have many goals I would like to pursue in my adventurous journey to becoming a nurse practitioner. First, I will be entering the Traditional Nursing Program next fall. I'm very excited because this will give me a chance to start out by getting my RN (registered nurse) degree. This program is supposed to have rigorous classes and will have a lifelong term care. This degree will approximately take two years. As well as enrolling in the nursing program, I will be completing my AA Degree. I currently have sixteen credits from college credits from CIS (college in the school) credits. I currently am taking fifteen credits, so I only have to take twenty-nine more credits to graduate will my AA Degree.

Over the past three and a half years of undergraduate education, I have received a very comprehensive education that has prepared me to function as a professional nurse after graduation next week. As my career advances I want to use my Master’s degree to help me propel myself above other. Furthermore, I am looking for the next step to improve my resume when promotions come around for the Dearborn Heights Fire Department. Starting the Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelorette of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Jacksonville University in June 2015 was a simple transition for me. I had graduated an Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) program in December 2014 and became a licensed RN in January 2015. I had just gotten hired for my first nursing position the month prior to the start of class and had not yet started working. I was very much still in student mode. While this makes it a bit easier to learn and process information in a classroom setting, I had no real world experience to help guide me. Through the knowledge I have gained as a student at Jacksonville University I have become a competent and well-rounded nurse. I am able to quickly problem solve and utilize critical thinking to identify and rectify issues. I have even put together, and will be presenting, and presentation about nursing practice for staff members at the facility where I work.
