In 1972, the novel Catch-22 by Joseph Heller was successfully banned in Strongsville, Ohio, and remained banned for four years (“Banned Books that Shaped America”). The American Library Association mentioned multiple challenges against the book in 1974, and 1979. Catch-22 has faced a history of censorship, but has still been included at Astoria High School for study in U.S. History curriculums. The book Catch-22 offers many opinions to the readers about the practice of war, but discredits our soldiers in doing so, and often unnecessarily refers to women inappropriately. Lastly, Catch-22 mentions illegal trade without repercussions, qualifying the novel for censorship. School libraries, and educational curriculums should take action and ban this title. …show more content…
The citizens of the United States should see their soldiers represented with bravery for protecting us, but in the book Catch-22, Yossarian, a fighter pilot, “knocked on wood, crossed his fingers, and tiptoed out of his tent to move the bomb line over Bologna” showcasing cowardice characteristics to the readers of this novel (Heller 129). Many of Heller’s characters display a weak and unstructured army, damaging citizens’ confidence in the safety their army provides.
Multiple times the novel Catch-22 describes women very rarely by name, but by their relationship to men. The character, Nately, falls in love with a prostitute whose name is never mentioned. Repeatedly Joseph Heller refers to this woman as “Nately’s whore”, as often as three times in a single paragraph (Heller 407). Representing her as a possession, and a prostitute, even when Nately had “fallen so deeply in love with [the woman]” (Heller 251).
