Cellphones are most common in society. The ease of access allows us to have the world at our fingertips 24 hours a day and we never have to unplug. We can surf the web, book a flight, check the weather, and message a friend 1000 miles away without leaving our bed.

Cell phones bring people together. “The idea behind Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram is to make us feel connected all the time” (Document 1). Technology has advanced at a rapid rate over the past decade. We can now do things on the go, including social networking, shop, check email, not to mention, make a call. As technology develops, electronics get smaller and smaller. Over 10 years ago, cell phones were the size of (if not larger than) cordless house phones. We would only see them being carried by business men or lawyers. Now there are 8 year olds with blackberry’s. Cell phones are a huge part of most of our lives, But what effects have they had on American culture?

In 2008, sales of cell phones across the world reached 1.28 billion (Solomon, 2011). As the cell phone industry grew, so did their features. Now, cell phones come equipped with GPS tracking, various types of applications (apps), e-mail programs, usage of the Internet with high speeds, and cameras. Different cultures have different wants and needs for what they desire in a phone.

Nearly everyone is using cell phones in their day routine lives. Cell phones have now become less of a novelty and more of a communication tool providing many utilities all in one package, from camera, video games, internet and apps; they combine business and personal convenience.

Cell phones are becoming a modern day necessity, to the point that they are a must have for every teenager and adult.  Human beings are growing increasingly attached to these devices, depending on them more and more for their communication with other people, job duties, and other daily activities that they must accomplish.

In the past it was never clear that the cell phone would have such an important status in today’s society. But the development of the cell phone into a smartphone proves this statement right. This includes transformations, besides the normal functionalities of a phone like text messaging, receiving and making calls.

Thesis: The usage of cell phones in modern day society has caused quite the problem for citizens in this generation by being a major distraction, causing addictions, and has sadly became the main resource of communication.

Throughout the history of the world, people have thought of new and innovative ways to communicate. In the past, people used smoke signals, telegrams, home telephones, and car telephones. Now the primary form of communication typically occurs on a cell phone. Cell phones have improved and developed a significant amount over the years. In 1973, the first cell phone, the Motorola Dyna-Tac, hit the market. It weighed an astonishing two pounds, and only had one feature—voice calls. Fast forward to the present day, most consumers not only own cell phones, but they own smartphones. These smartphones are now capable of incredible things. Throughout the years, technology has seen major advancements and improvements. New technological innovations have sparked the interest of many of us throughout the world. From the television in 1927 to the first computer in 1946, technology was experiencing changes that were vital for the basis of the modern world’s success. After the invention of the first computer, many people of all ages and genders throughout the world became vastly intrigued by the innovations and wanted to become a part of it. From there, portable cameras, cassette tapes, laserdiscs, laser printers, were invented, all leading up to one of the most widespread and commonly used communication device of the twenty-first century, the cell phone. The cell phone was first invented in 1973 by a man named Martin Cooper. This specific cellular device originally weighed 1.1 kilograms and was an astonishing twenty-three centimeters long and thirteen centimeters deep and with a width of 4.45 centimeters. In comparison, one of the more modern phones of the twenty-first century, the Iphone 5, weighs around four ounces and measures at 5.5 inches long and 2.5 inches wide with a thickness of around 7 millimeters thick, making it significantly smaller in size compared to its early predecessor.
