The Cleveland Cavaliers entered Thursday night’s matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks with the best record in the Eastern Conference and the third-best record in the NBA, all while missing their starting backcourt for every game so far this season. However, according to LeBron James, the Cavs needed to “play better ball”. James recently publicized his belief that the Cavs needed better performances than the ones they’ve put forth through the early part of the season. Cavs head coach David Blatt backed his star player and praised James’ leadership following James’ comments regarding his team’s effort. “This league is a tremendous league and it’s full of great teams that all have great players, but it’s the teams that have that kind of leadership …show more content…
The win pushed Cleveland’s record to 6-0 in The Q this season, while the Cavs (9-3) have also won 26 of their last 27 regular season games in the …show more content…
Leading 28-23 after the first quarter, Cleveland stretched its lead to as many as 21 points in the second quarter. When Cavs power forward Tristan Thompson converted a layup and free throw following a foul on the play, Cleveland secured a hefty 61-42 lead. When Thompson threw down a dunk in traffic on Cleveland’s next possession, the Cavs had their largest lead of the half, 63-42. Cleveland took a 63-48 lead into halftime. The contest with Milwaukee was Thompson’s 300th consecutive game played as a Cavalier, which is also the second-longest active streak in the NBA, behind only DeAndre Jordan (332) of the Los Angeles Clippers. Thompson became just the fourth player in Cavs history to play in 300 straight games, joining Jim Chones (361), Austin Carr (351) and Danny Ferry (301). The Cavs power forward finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds against Milwaukee, his second double-double of the season. “I know this,” Blatt said. “He got banged pretty good in the last game, and the trainer was talking to me about it. I said ‘Well, is he going to be alright to play tonight?’ He looked at me like I was crazy — Like ‘What are you kidding me? Of course he’s gonna be out there. It’s
Kirkendoll added his third double-double of the season and his ninth of his career with 16 points and 14 rebounds. He was 1-for-4 from beyond the arc, saving the best for last on the buzzer beater. Kirkendoll narrowly missed double-digit assists, adding seven against
Junior Travion Kirkendoll reached the 30-point plateau for the first time in his career, scoring 35 points on 10-for-26 shooting and hitting all 10 from the charity stripe. He scored 31 points in the second half alone on 9-for-14 shooting (5-for-6 from behind the arc).
First and foremost, two of Cleveland's big three must perform better. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love shot a combined 14.3% (4/28) from the field. This kind of efficiency is detrimental to the Cavaliers offense. It is their worst combined shooting percentage since becoming teammates. This poor shooting night shouldn't happen again, but for Love this isn't a new struggle. The forward is averaging 17 ppg, but is only shooting 36% from the field. He usually gets to the foul line, but failed to get there in game 3.
“If we are shooting the ball well, we can beat anybody. The playoffs are fun and the kids are excited.”
Cleveland's fourth ranked offense challenges Atlanta's second ranked defense. Per 100 possessions, the Cavs score 108.1 points while the Hawks allow 98.8 points per. During the regular season, Cleveland shot 36.2% from deep and Atlanta countered by holding opponents to
"We have a new team and a lot of different faces, but even for the returning guys, it's a different mix."
This game is a difficult one to predict because the Cavs' looked like they have regrouped
The league’s second leading scorer dropped 19 points in the final twelve minutes of the rubber match alone and converted 10-of-13 free shots from the foul line during the entire 48 minutes of the game.
The Cleveland Cavaliers that swept the top-seeded Toronto Raptors out of the postseason in dominant fashion looked completely different from the Cavs team that eked out 50 wins in the regular season. And with good reason: The bulk of Cleveland’s postseason minutes have gone to, quite literally, a different team. Through the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Cavaliers have leaned heavily on a five-man lineup that had never shared the court before.
The Cavaliers tried their best, have pulled within 70-65 late in the third period, but the Raptors managed to extend their margin to 80-70 by taking a 3-point buzzer beater courtesy of
Commenting about the strong performance from the team's three superstars is Paul (2012) who observed, "For the Heat (15-6), it was the perfect remedy after losing three of the past five games. It was also their chance for redemption, after falling to the Wizards (3-18) 105-101 on Dec. 4 in Washington. LeBron James led the Heat with 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Dwyane Wade added 13 points and Chris Bosh had 12. The Heat led for most of the way behind strong play from their three superstars and a solid defensive effort. It was one of the few times they were able to produce a balanced scoring effort. Despite James leading the way again, they had four starters score in double-figures. Miami took control in the early stages of the game and never trailed. A jumper by Wade made it 20-7 with 4:30 left in the first quarter." ("Saturday December 15, 2012," 2012)
The Bucks size, length and athleticism will present a problem for the Lakers. Offensively, the Lakers need a solid performance moving, passing and cutting to make the Bucks defense work as well as find the open shot. Defensively, the purple and gold must get back in transition, stop the ball, do a solid job against the pick-and-roll play, surround Greg Monroe and make him play in a crowd, quickly rotate out to open shooters, limit the Bucks to one shot per possession, box their men out and
The elephant in the room can’t go unnoticed. The Cavs haven’t won an NBA title since the franchise came into existence, and the last time any professional team from Cleveland captured a championship was more than 50 years ago. Media day 2015 was simply the first event of what should be an undeniably eventful 2015-16 Cavs season.
Matt Moore, CBS Sports news writer, claims “The Cavaliers, meanwhile, looked like they had the best team they’ve put on the floor. They were dominant, dynamic and looked like they had built chemistry and continuity.” True Lebron James played with the Cavaliers his first year off of college and had chemistry with his team, however no one likes a team with only one person running the court and thinking he can tell everyone what to do. When people watch basketball they look for the effort that each team put into working together.CBS Sports stats states “That sequence is bonkers. It’s brash, arrogant, fun and brilliant. It is everything the Warriors do wrapped up in one sequence..”
