Water Pollution: A Serious Issue in the World Today
Water pollution, a serious incident that is happening currently, is damaging the environment. There are multiple cases if water pollution. "It usually occurs anywhere around the world in lakes, rivers, oceans, and ponds." (Amieddoleh). Just a few include the Colorado River, the New Zealand River, and the many American beaches. "The main places water pollution occurs is in coastal regions and down river from a major city" ("Water"). Water pollution is almost always occurring. Altogether there are many water pollution incidents, it is interesting to learn about the cases and find a possible way to resolve the environmental problem.
Some bodies of water are tremendously polluted. The most polluted river in the world is Citarum River, Indonesia. This river flows through the basin where a numerous population lives. It is so polluted that the water is not visible. The major source of this pollution is from the large numbers of factories that are located near this river. The quality of the water around these factories have turned cloudy and black ("Top"). Although this water is highly polluted, the residents have no choice but to continue using it. Kamilo Beach, Hawaii is one of the most polluted beaches in the world. Kamilo Beach located on the Big Island has nicknames: Trash Beach and Plastic Beach. The currents of the ocean drag the garbage from the sea. Most of the trash is from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This altogether creates a plastic nightmare in paradise (Waldek). Water pollution can be caused all over the world. It is common in areas near factories. There are also many different incidents that cause this.
There are multiple causes of water pollution. "A serious issue is people throwing trash into bodies of water; it is hurting the environment and aquatic life" ("Beach"). There have been multiple cases of oil spills in large bodies of water. In March of 1967, 25-36 million gallons of oil was spilled. This ship hit a reef off the coast of Cornwall; this spill created an oil slick that measured 270 square miles and contaminating 180 miles of coastland (Moss) An enormous number of aquatic animals died.
