“What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.” In the quote by Confederate general, Robert E. Lee, the manifestation of war is interpreted to be a harsh and cruel occasion that divides and destroys societies. Although this is true, war seems to surface time and time again due to society’s inherent condemnation to opposing beliefs and the lack of altruistic concerns for the well-being of others. The American Civil War is known to be a harrowing period of the bloodiest battle America has ever seen because of the division and detestation between two regions of the United States. The Northern and Southern disputes against state’s rights, the abolitionist movement, Abraham Lincoln’s controversial election, and whether slavery should be tolerated with no consequences were all momentous events that led to the inevitable war between the two regions. Several disagreements on political, social, and economic ideologies between the Union and Confederacy in early America led to the commencement of the Civil War. With tensions increasing between the Northern and Southern regions of the United States before the commencement of the Civil War, a precursor to this event was the dispute of state’s rights versus the federal government.
