Cassie Dawin Campbell was born on November 22, 1973 in Richmond hill, Ontario, Canada. In the early 1990’s she was a defensemen in hockey and was the captain for the University of Guelph’s team. During the time that Cassie played for this team she took them to a collegiate championship in 1995. She was also a member of the Canadian women’s national ice hockey team, and played for both teams respectively at the same time. My series of oil painting and prints, About Jennifer Chung, Except Not, combines the exploration of the self with motifs to convey a message. My initial series encompassed myself and the mirror to tell a story. My personal intentions when creating those series was to express a repressed memory. I experienced unrequited love with another girl during my high school years, and the events that transpired drastically changed how I viewed the world. The first instance occurred when I started to look at myself in the mirror. I eventually found the theme mundane, however, and desired more to discuss ideas while trying to come up with innovative methods to communicate them. This began when I discovered this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt: “Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people”. Susan McClary’s scholarly article, A Musical Dialect from the Enlightenment: Mozart’s Piano Concerto in G Major, K. 453, Mvt. 2, starts off with her recalling a time after watching a performance of the concerto with a colleague and the two of them confessing different opinions about the soloist’s performance. By reading the story ‘The boy who saved me from myself’, we learned that we need to have grit while confronting a problem and get over it by ourself. To have grit is important because it helps people to develop their growth mindset. For one the protagonist, Ryan White, had shown his grit in the story. Although he had two horrible diseases, instead of defeating by them, he was still struggle with them. Unfortunately for Ryan, people around him were not kind.
