Mammalian dissection provides an experience that two dimensional diagrams are incapable of and serves as an indicator of whether entering a profession that involves the application of anatomy and physiology is suitable for students in this course. People perceive dissecting fetal pigs as being cruel and unnecessary. What they don’t understand is the educational purpose behind it by providing students information to help them better understand not only the functions and structures of the fetal pig but also their own body. Since we as humans are also a member of class Mammalia, we have a good deal in common biologically with pigs, although we might not like to think so. Since we have a good deal in common, it is very helpful for us to study these animals both anatomically and physiologically. We do this when we test medicines on pigs, perfect surgical procedures on pigs, and even when we used to use pig valves for replacements in human hearts. Thus the pig is a first-rate example of a mammal and the purpose of this lab is to recognize the specific similarities between the pig and ourselves as humans. To accomplish this we

Instead of taking such a far-fetched approach, I chose to approach my desire by dissecting a dead animal, and it just happened to be a coincidence that I had to dissect a dead cat for my Anatomy and Physiology Class. Of course, a cat is not the same as a human being and a dead cat is even farther from an a human being. Nonetheless, I was content with a cat because according to Animal Corner, “A cat’s skeleton is very similar to that of a human being” (1).
All of the incision were preformed very careful and slow. We tried not to rupture the pig, but it very difficult. The equipment that was given was handy, however, they were not comfortable in our hands. For example, the scissors were too small for our hands and the scalpel was not useful in most of the situations we encountered while dissecting. In courses such as biology, anatomy, and physiology, learning the anatomy of a human is imperative to learning about its functions and processes. Due to a lack of money, resources, and access, UConn cannot provide the use of a human cadaver for educational purposes. Since we lack actual human specimens, the next best thing is the fetal pig. The past two weeks of dissection have been very valuable learning opportunities and extremely enjoyable. Dr Molyneux and the demonstrators were so helpful and caring; I felt they truly made a difference to how much I understood from this dissection experience. As well as this, I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity to dissect a human body and would like to thank the individual who kindly donated their body for this purpose.
For the cat lab, there is no hypothesis as this is a observational activity. The purpose of this lab is to compare the anatomy and physiology of a Domestic House Cat, to that of a human. The references are “New” Lab manual, and Disecction of the Cat. The scale of refrence is one bar = 3mm.
The Black Cat, written by Edgar Allen Poe, is a short story about a man, also the narrator, who starts out by living a “happy” life with his wife and favorite black cat, Plato. Although, he begins to be consumed by his drinking and becomes irritable. The black cat used to be by his side but now avoids him. This irritability leads him into becoming overly aggressive, which results in him hurting and murdering the cat. Then, a second cat appears who looks the same as Pluto but with a white spot on his chest. Eventually, the man starts to feel anger towards the cat and attempts to murder him with an axe, but his wife stops him. Unfortunately, his wife was hit in the head. The man then decides to bury his dead wife in his basement wall. He thinks he has got away with murder, but in the end, one learns that he had accidentally buried the cat alive with his wife. The cat reveals his hiding spot when he is caught by the police. Although it seems that the main character has committed these actions solely from alcoholism, it is obvious that there are signs he is also suffering from a mental illness.
For the past two-hundred years, dissection of the human cadaver has been the gold standard for teaching aspiring medical professionals the networking and layout of the human body. Surprisingly, cadaver usage has had a rather curious history.
