Casu: A Short Story

It was Wednesday, August 12th and I was just about to enjoy lunch with Sarah Lucas when I received a message on my phone, “PIPING PLOVER AT CONNEAUT.” Lunch was over - I quickly grabbed my Binoculars and my camera and I was off!!!

Ernie has always been a little messed up, he has lived in Missouri for the 32 long years of his life. On the day that changed his life forever, November 22, 1996. Him and his family were driving to the mall and they got into an accident. His Mom and Dad both died and Ernie was very depressed. He got the notes, of what made the car accident happen, an inspection failure with the Engine. He did not know what to do with his life. He almost committed suicide, but then out of rage, the decided he was going to make the person who caused the car accident. He went searching for months, and finally came to the conclusion that the person that last assessed the car was Eddie Thompson.

In Will Yandik’s article, “Riding The American Landscape Of lawn,” he attempts to persuade his readers that lawns are outdated and need revamped due to their effect on the environment. Yandik writes about “chemical pollution and runoff, a voracious appetite for water, mowers that belch hydrocarbons,” (Will 539) all of which have been documented for. Yandik struggles with “the aesthetic problem with the lawn is that it allows no room for innovation, growth, or art” (Will 540). In the text “Ridding The American landscape of lawn” he persuades the reader to think differently about “the lawn”, however, I feel as if the lawn is a vital key to our environment along with the way we live by providing an inviting

It was the spring of mid may traveling to Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Rolling down my window to get a hint of fresh air, the smell of trees,leafs and grass filling up my nose and filling up the car. Hearing the birds chirp and the cars passed while looking out the window to see miles and miles of trees weirdly calmed me.

There once was a girl named Bailey, she was known for her rich family. She lived with both her parents and her three siblings; Alexander, Christian and Dominic. Alexander, 20, was the oldest of the siblings. Christian and Dominic, 19, were twin brothers. Although they were identical twins and looked so much alike, you could differentiate between them. Christian always acted like a buffoon anywhere the family would go. Sometimes he would use his silliness to get a girl. On the other hand, Dominic always kept to himself, he would give people a baleful look when they stare or try to start a conversation with him.

“You didn’t have to convince people the place was haunted. Because as we all know the house has been rumored to be haunted for years,” I explained. “You just had to stir things up and add to the existing fears.”

Nick was there when Dulce was eating breakfast, smiling at him, and laughing at the jokes Nick thought was stupid, but Dulce thought they were clever. Nick were there when she was asking the old woman to pet her dog, and Nick saw the happiness in Dulce’s eyes when she said yes. Nick were there when she was over the moon with joy because her half-assed essay got a eighty-five percent. Nick wasn’t there when Dulce tried to cut open her wrists with push pins and when she gulped down a handful of sleeping pills.

Born and raised on a farm in Knott County, I was used to acres of farmland and grass in every direction. The porch was shaded by a large silver oak in the summer and became a nightmare of leaves in the fall. Weeping willows grazed the ground, swaying to and fro when a breeze blew through the thin branches. Pine trees lined both sides of the driveway leaving the ground littered with pine cones and needles in winter. My dad was a perfectionist in all things and our yard was no exception as no weed or dandelion ever lasted long enough to plant roots. The grass was cross cut in a different direction each week no matter how hot the weather or how tired he was. He never allowed me to the cut the grass and as a teenager, I was happy about that. I never dreamed one day I would purchase a place that would be just as much work to maintain. Over time, I forgot (or ignored) the fact that his lawn was flat and the place I ended up calling home was the side of a mountain, sloped top to bottom.

Was it a normal, ordinary day. Also, it’s my first day at high school and new friends Awais met. Around Awais walked, saw a teacher, asked how his day was. Never responded. Maybe Awais should make sure he could see me, but at least he knew his name, it was Randy. By me, many teachers walked, but they also never responded. It also seemed like Randy had a gas tank with him.

“It's just another game,” Luke breathes out, knuckles white with the tight grip on the sink. He stares at himself in the mirror, and repeats, voice a little steadier and louder: “It's just another game.”

In the back of my high school, there was a dirt plot, fenced in, covered in weeds, and it was going to concreted over. I walked past the dirt plot and wondered “Why doesn’t anyone do something with it?” I thought about it on the way home from school and I talked to my friends about it. I told them that I wanted to do something with space, we came up with many things to do with the space before but then I realized that we could use the space for a garden. I remembered that I love gardening, when I was young my mom and I would always garden together, we would have the best time harvesting our plants and we bonded so much over our garden.
