SHREVEPORT, La. – The Gents were able to score first and each half, but Southwestern answered with the equalizer both times as Centenary (0-4-2, 0-2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) and Southwestern (3-2-2, 1-0-2) tied at two goals each Sunday afternoon, September 17.
Centenary lit up the scoreboard in the 15th minute when sophomore Gabe Rodriguez’s corner deflected off classmate Nic Douthit to the far post. Sophomore Scott Halper cleaned it up center of the net for his first goal of the season and the third of his collegiate career.
After Southwestern tied the game seven minutes later to send the match to halftime tied at one, junior Chase Clark netted his second goal of the season to put the Gents ahead. In the 62nd minute, the
Freshman Cody Crowder’s single put runners on the corners, and an error on a sacrifice bunt scored Zapata. Trinity then threw an error trying to turn a double play to allow another runner to score, and Guin’s two-out single put 11-0.
Centenary (1-1) tied the game in the fourth inning and the YellowJackets stranded base runners in the fifth and sixth inning.
LeTourneau capitalized on a pair of defensive miscues by UT Tyler in the fifth to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. In the inning, senior Dylan Wadyko reached on a fielding error. Then, he moved to second on a LETU sacrifice bunt. Next, senior Sean Sellers reached on a wild pitch on strike three and Wadyko moved to third to put runners on the corners for senior Taylor Empkey. A bloop single by Empkey plated Wadyko for the first LETU run; then a fielder's choice by junior Kyle Jacobs brought in Sellers to make it a 3-2
Texas Lutheran scored the next five, but another seven unanswered gave Centenary its first lead of the game. Morris and freshman Deunya Small made layups and junior Peyton Hurst hit a fastbreak triple with 5:18 left in the second. Centenary never trailed the rest of the half.
With the Maroon and White down 2-1 in the fourth, they scored three runs to take the lead. A hit by pitch, single, and a dropped liner to third loaded the bases for Centenary. After a lineout, a sarifice fly by junior Michelle Tasin tied the game at two. Freshman Hallie Smith followed with a double. Despite being thrown out trying to take third, both runners crossed the plate to give the Ladies a 4-2
Tied at two after an inning in game one, the Ladies scored two in the second and two in the third to open up a 6-2 lead. With two outs and no one on in the second, infield singles by junior Payton LeBlanc and sophomore Haley Campbell put two on for senior Anna Dunn. Dunn doubled to left center to clear the bases and put Centenary up for good.
Martin St, Louis scored the game’s 1st goal of the game, but, the period ended tied at 1.
With two outs in the second, Josh Watson singled through the left side, plating two and giving the TCU a 3-0 lead.
The Gents led by nine in heading into the second period, but a 12-3 run by Rust in the first six minutes of the final period tied the game. After neither team scored in more than 1:30, Dominique Brown made two free throws and Antono Jones made a layup. Kirkendoll took a defensive rebound coast-to-coast, but a layup by Jones and two free throws by Allen Potts cut the lead to three. A Jones layup cut the Centenary lead to one.
Travis Jones led off the third with a triple to center field. Joe Baker's sacrifice fly to center field scored Jones. Tres Barrera's solo shot down the left field line cut the Longhorns' deficit to 5-2.
Despite being ranked #16 Perfect Game, the Gents are not yet in the top-25 in the D3Baseball.com poll. However, Centenary received 28 points in the poll to be the top “Also Receiving Votes” team in the SCAC. Trinity received 26 votes, while Texas Lutheran garnered three votes.
With Centenary leading game two 10-8 in the top of the seventh, sophomore Kylie Bradley blasted the first pitch she saw over the leftfield fence. However, Grambling State answered with three runs of its own to tie the game. With one out, McKenzie Johnson homered and Kenyshae Beasley singled. She stole second and scored on Mercedes Williams double. Tia Coleman followed with the game-tying single, but did not advance past first after sophomore Mackenzie Stewart struck out the final two hitters.
SHREVEPORT, La. – Despite the steady rain falling all day, the Gents offense failed to cool off as they scored 31 runs as Centenary (13-3) took game one 19-2 and beat Northland College (0-2) 12-2 in a pair of run-ruled, seven-inning games Sunday, March 5.
After Centenary tied game two at three, Dallas took advantage of a dropped popped up bunt. With one out and two on base, Jade Miller doubled to score the go-ahead run and put a pair in scoring position. Allie Driskill added an infield single that cleared the bases.
The contest against the Crusaders are also important for both teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament picture. The Ladies (3-8-1, 2-5-1 SCAC) currently sit tied with Dallas (3-8-2, 2-5-1 SCAC) for the fourth seed as both teams have seven points. Sitting right behind, tied for sixth, is Austin College and Southwestern at 2-6 (six points). All four teams are fighting for the final three spots.
