A vast majority of the population that is nearing retirement age tend to experience a feeling of "unfinished business" and begin planning their golden years around accomplishing them. As retirees, many may start a new hobby they've always wanted to do, write a book, traveling or even going back to school in some cases. Their services include geriatric care management, skilled nursing in-home care, and nursing assistant in-home care. The Nodaway County Senior Center is undergoing changes after their state and federal funding was cut 100 percent.

My presentation topic is social policy and older people and the key act I’m going to mainly focus on is the NHS & Community Care Act 1990.

Prior to 1935 there were no social programs in America for the elderly, and those that were not able to work. Those who were unable to work relied on friends and family or local charity for help. (Quadagno, 2014) pg 95. During the Depression in the 1930’s, banks failed and many people lost their savings and retirement money. Many older workers especially were let go from their jobs and unemployment among people over 45 years was high. Unemployment was about 25 percent for all workers and 37% for all non-farm workers. (Smiley, 2008).
