Pueblo Magnet High School Success Pueblo Magnet High School has experienced success in many different ways as a community. The teachers at Pueblo Magnet High School have received numerous awards, due to their driven teachers and student body. Teachers encourage their students to engage in politics and the local government, and encourage their students to get into wellness programs. Thus, their sports teams have excelled and their student body is engaged and motivated. Therefore, Pueblo Magnet High School’s success stems from a dedicated faculty and an ambitious student body. On August 31st, 2015, Charles Campbell, a math teacher at Pueblo Magnet High School, was “informed that he was one of the 25 recipients” of the “MathMovesU Math Hero” award (Pueblo Magnet High School, 2015, p.1). Mr. Campbell received $2500 for the award and that amount was matched and given to school as well (Pueblo Magnet High School, 2015, p.1). This teacher is one example of the …show more content…
In Pueblo Magnet High School, there are signs on display everywhere saying, “We Stand with Rosa” (One Year in Sanctuary: Community Stands with Rosa – No More Deaths, 2015, p.1). Rosa Robles-Loreto has received a lot of publicity because of this incident, but is still in danger of being deported. All in all, immigration issues in the area affect the school and its students (Pueblo Magnet High School, 2015, p.1).
Questions about Pueblo Magnet High School One of the questions that I have about this issue is, “How is HB 2281 affecting the students at Pueblo Magnet High? And how can we make a better learning environment for the students that are affected by the Arizona House Bill 2281?” I would like to know how the Mexican-American students are taking the ban on the Mexican-American Studies program, and I would like to know if they feel excluded in

The school got its name from the Spanish word “pequeño pueblo,” meaning “small town” (Pueblo Magnet High School-Information, 2015, p. 1). The school colors are Columbia Blue and Navy Blue (Pueblo Magnet High School-Information, 2015, p. 1).
The course of MAS in the Tucson Unified School District was created on July 1998 (Romero 1). The struggles of MAS and it’s creations go back to some cases such as Mendez v. Westminster (1947) , Independent Schools District v. Salvatierra (1931), Alvarez v. Lemon Grove (1931) (Romero 1). In Arizona the Tucson Unified School District is the only district that has Ethnic Studies. This program was created to reduce grade retention, to improve special education, expand courses and to have equity for hispanics (Magallon 6). The course gives their students identity, hope, purpose and interest. When the students are interested in a topic they are more focused and motivated to try harder. This has been seen in the Mexican American Studies course. Research on the article At war with the state in order to save the lives of our children: the battle to save ethnic studies in Arizona by Augustine F. Romero have stated that “Our students are three times more likely to pass the Reading section, four times more likely to pass the Writing section, and two-and-a-half times more likely to pass the Math section than their peers not in our program.” Furthermore, the graduation rate when up to a 97.5 percent and more than 67 percent of the students who rated from high school enrolled to a higher education (Romero 1). The equity MAS provides to their students increases the their success in
Leaguetown Independent School District is currently facing a conflict of whether having later start times would perhaps help the improvement of academic performance of Leaguetown Middle School and high school students. I performed my field experience at Chiefland Elementary. Chiefland is a very small town with the population of six thousand. There are over eight hundred students enrolled at Chiefland Elementary. There are fifty-two instructional staff members and two administers. In those fifty-two staff members, there is one African American teacher and one male teacher; the rest are women. This is a white dominate school. In the school there is 73% Caucasian students, 17% African American students, and 4% Hispanic students. There is only 3% of students that are ESOL and 5% are Gifted and Talented. This semester we learned that in small areas and with low income schools, there are more Hispanics and African American people. In this case, Chiefland Elementary

I loved the approach taken by Ms. Barbara Gruener at Westwood Elementary located in Texas. In any number-step program, e.g. 5 step, 10 step, or 12 step, they always say that admitting to fault or acknowledging the problem is the first step. Barbara was fully aware of the daily struggles within Westwood’s community (“Character.org,” n.d.). To begin to solve the deep-rooted problem, she discreetly sought out help (“Character.org,” n.d). Since the faculty was divided, it was difficult to get them involved and create unity at the school. Westwood Elementary bases their learning on the concepts of performance character. I chose performance character because of the disruptive student behavior and the lack of sufficient grades held by each student. Barbara Gruener was determined to help each member of Westwood Elementary.
