The majority of people participating in the march diverted through the Bogside and towards an area known as the Free Derry Corner. A place where British soldiers knew that they were not allowed. A small number of youths split from the main body of the march to attempt to go through the barricades of the British Army. The youths were cursing and throwing stones at the British Soldiers. The soldiers at the barricades responded with rubber bullets, tear gas, and a water cannon. Witnesses said that the riot was not intense due to the small number of …show more content…
This is a lesson we in the US Military have learned multiple times in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Learning that collateral damage can turn former allies or pacifists into extremist enemy combatants. The Case of Bloody Sunday, the events turned Unionists and Nationalists that were accepting of the British rule in Northern Ireland into Irish Republican Army Soldiers. The public outcry from the atrocities in Londonderry created the largest recruitment in IRA
The St.valentine massacre was a brutal killing. People say That Al “Scarface” Capone was the cause of the shooting that night.
At the start of the Civil War, many Irish immigrants traveled to America to seek a new life or escape their old ones in a poverty-stricken Ireland. One of the most well-known and fiercest brigades made up of Irish immigrants during the Civil War was the Irish Brigade. Consisting of the 69th, 88th, 63rd New York, 116th Pennsylvania, and 28th Massachusetts Regiments, the brigade was so fierce and strong willed, that they led the charge in many battles, suffering high amounts of casualties in every battle.
Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave was the leader of the attack. The crowd tossed various items towards the sentry and challenged the soldiers to fire their weapons. Private White Hugh, a soldier, warned Captain Thomas Preston of the riot, who was the officer of the watch. Preston proclaimed that he posted six privates of the 29th Regiment and an officer to aid White. These Soldiers included: Corporal William Wemms, Hugh Montgomery, John Carroll, William McCauley, William Warren, and Matthew Kilroy. When the soldiers went to the customhouse, they spread themselves in formation. The crowd consistently taunted them and threw snowballs. When something hit Private Montgomery he told the troops to fire. Although the crowd left the customhouse, they continued to rise in the streets. [Independence Hall
When fighting the Vietnam War many did not think it possible for the United States to loose. Those fighting underestimated the power of the Viet Cong. With a foreign land and foreign customs Marines struggled to get accustomed to the way the war was fought. Philip Caputo addresses these learned lessons in A Rumor of War. Lessons that were learned in Vietnam also have relevance to the current war in Afghanistan. The men in both wars fought against an enemy that blends in with the locals. Philip Caputo’s first hand account of the Vietnam War shows the mistakes that were made and how those lessons taught the United States not to make the same mistakes in Afghanistan.
The Birmingham church bombing stands as an example of senseless domestic violence. Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair were all little girls whose lives were shortly lived as victims of this tragedy. The fact of it happening at the Birmingham church, which stands as a holy place and a representation of peace; is even more appalling. At the time, numerous bombings of homes and churches were occurring at the same time. Each one's attacking African-Americans and the state of Mississippi just allowed it to happen. Why would those turn to violence in order to reject change?
Others believe that if you fight in a war and you win then you will forever be remembered and honored, also that you should fight for your rights. The quote “Those who have died fighting for freedom are remembered” explains how you shouldn’t let people tell you what to do and if you fighting a war you will be honored and remembered. I reject this because, for the people who lose, nothing would happen to them. They wouldn’t be remembered, they would’ve died and the other side wouldn’t care. Therefore I disagree with the aggressive action.
As the march was going on with the veterans, bricks were being thrown at the marchers and gas was used. Some were killed during their march which was not expected to happen. No matter
Martin Luther King Jr. was one of many great civil rights activists that have fought for equal rights. Throughout the 1960’s he persevered through many things such as, “On March 7, 1965, a civil rights march, planned from Selma to Alabama's capitol in Montgomery, turned violent as police with nightsticks and tear gas met the demonstrators as they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. King was not in the march, however the attack was televised showing horrifying images of marchers being bloodied and severely injured. Seventeen demonstrators were hospitalized leading to the naming the event "Bloody Sunday." Everyone, young or old, gay or straight, women or man, everyone should get equal rights and this man shows why and how we can do it.
Childhood immunization is an important factor in today’s life, which is why it is important to be aware of the facts. After reading two articles, I came up with the conclusion that Ronald Bailey’s article “Refusing Vaccination Puts Others at Risk” presents a stronger argument than Sandy Reider article “The Science Is Not Settled.” One reason Ronald Bailey’s article is stronger is that Bailey has more authority than Reider. Sandy Reider who is a MD, general practitioner and primary care doctor practiced medicine in Vermont.
This action is one that could only come about in war. Due to the war people are more willing to act out of character and in some situations even forced to. This is best represented when Thucydides writes “Ill-considered boldness was counted as loyal manliness; prudent hesitation was held to be cowardice in disguise, and moderation merely the cloak of an unmanly nature” (3.82). The soldiers who are committing these atrocities are simply followers of a democratic regime. The leaders of this regime are in fact giving them the command to slaughter innocent people simply because they stand for an opposing cause. No leaders of good virtue, would command their followers to commit such acts, in modern society acts such as this would be considered war crimes.
Our society praises and respects these kinds of heroic actions. It is rare to find a movie in which a soldier attempts to rescue a fallen comrade and not only fails but loses his life in the process. Another heroic and courageous act is neutralizing a very large threat. This act occurs in Saving Private Ryan when a small squad of soldiers uses teamwork and ingenuity to disable a tank and a group of enemy soldiers accompanying it. This type of scenario can be found in many movies starring American soldiers. Movies tend to portray American soldiers victoriously overcoming their enemies because of their superior training, ability to think on their feet, improvise, and weaponry. It gives the message to the audience that American soldiers are better than any other country’s soldiers and that it is much more common for an American soldier to live through war. America has never admitted to losing a war and the news media usually mentions the deaths of American soldiers only when it seems that the soldiers were defenseless, such as when they are killed by car bombs or hidden improvised explosive devices, more commonly known as IEDs. This causes the perception that America can afford to go to war because American casualties always remain relatively low and America always wins. This perception coupled with America’s value of heroism and courage causes people to join the military in order to be

They were getting sticks and other things to throw at them, beating some of them almost to the brink of death before stopping. The kids should have minded their own business when seeing the soldier walking down the street, and yes he was intoxicated but sometimes people must mind their own business. Not to mention he had a weapon and he was drunk, if anything they should have walked the other direction knowing he wasn't in his right mind.
March 16 saw a demonstration in Montgomery, Alabama in which 580 demonstrators planned to march “from the Jackson Street Baptist Church to the Montgomery County Courthouse” (Reed 26). These protestors included a large number of northern college students. They met a police line a few blocks from the Courthouse and were forbidden from proceeding because “they did not have a parade permit” (Reed 26). Across the street came 40 or so students who planned on joining the group en route to the Courthouse. Eventually a few of the demonstrators dared to cross the street, led by James Forman who had organized the march. When it seemed the whole group would cross, police took action, with mounted officers and volunteers arriving at 1:12 pm. Riding into the small group of protestors, they forced most to withdraw, but a few stood fast around a utility pole where horsemen began to beat them. “A posseman
I always knew what I wanted in life. I liked to plan out my future as much as I could from what I was going to wear the next day to planning my university degrees to planning my wedding. I am futuristic, its one of my strengths. Planning my future is fun for me. I can tell you what university I would like to attend, what my major and minor will be in university, the city I want to live in, the dogs I would like to get when I move out, all the details of my pre-planned wedding, and what my children’s names would be.
