NIOSH investigators concluded to minimize the risk of reoccuring events, fire departments should include pre-plan surveys of buildings throughout the districts. Often times, during the pre-plan phases, fire departments will make suggestions to business owners about the hazardous materials and not following up on the suggestions that they make. Pre-planning older buildings should occur often to promote safety to the firefighters. Basic walk through measures will give the fire personnel a better picture of the building and what hazards are present in the building. Ensure that all the fire crews coordinate ventilation with fire attack. Ventilation should occur prior to interior fire attack, to reduce the heat, smoke and other toxic gases inside the …show more content…
One example of this was the fact that the hardware store did not present an active sprinkler system and if the system sprinkler was in place at the time of the incident, chances of the explosion would have been less that what it was. Sprinkler systems in buildings reduce the chances of fire growth significally, also resulting in a successful interior fire attack. Consider to the building owners that if they do have hazardous materials located in the building, to either store them outside in a cage where it is marked and labeled accordingly with placards or have placards attached to the building if the materials are located inside the building. Having that in place will give the fire department a good judgement on whether to go inside the structure or go defensive attack during a fire. This fire was a tragic fire that could have been prevented if the kids that were in the back yard had not had knocked over the gasoline can. Hopefully, fire departments across the nation learned from this fire and is more proactive in better pre-planning older style buildings in their
Nowadays, it is almost impossible to find a building that does not have exit signs or fire extinguishers in America. Whether in a university or at the work place, exit signs and fire safety instructions can easily be found by anybody. Fire drills are regularly practiced to ensure the least amount of casualty will occur if something goes wrong. However, a hundred years ago safety issues were barely taken into considerations and safety regulations were most of the time inexistent, as illustrates the terrible fire that happened a hundred years ago at the Triangle
Making sure that the fire exits are kept clear and fire prevention equipment is kept maintained.
The Golden Fire Department (GFD) is proud to introduce our newest employee Kathleen (Katie) Quintana! Katie Joined the GFD Fire Prevention Bureau staff in mid June 2015. She worked for the City and County of Denver for 10 ½ years, there she held a variety of clerical and administrative positions. Her last few years with Denver, Katie worked for the Denver Police Department doing photo enforcement, after that she was a 911 call taker. In 2005, she accepted a position with the Aurora Fire Department (AFD) as a front desk receptionist. Shortly after she was hired, she was promoted to fire inspector. Katie spent eight years with the Aurora Fire Department. During her tenure, she became an ICC and state certified Fire Inspector II, she also received
The LA County Fire Department needs to implement an anti-nepotism program. The OCI reported that 27 sworn personnel had access to oral interviews test questions and answer, and use the material to distribute to some of their relatives (Naimo, 2015). According to the OCI, these 27 sworn personnel were two Battalion Chiefs, 17 Fire Captains, one Fire Fighter Specialist, and seven Firefighters (Naimo, 2015). These 27 sworn personnel had no authority to distribute the examination material so it’s important to implement an anti-nepotism program for the whole department. Having an anti-nepotism program can help, especially Fire Captains to understand and follow the department’s series of guidelines, laws and regulations. Furthermore, they can formulate a great judgment, and their leading principle must be accountable to and within the rule of law. Accountability is an element of bureaucratic responsibility that involves public officials to obey the law (Hill & Lynn Jr., 2016).This accomplishes as Mark Bovens argues, increase performance in the workplace, reinforcing integrity, encourage democratic domination, preserving lawfulness and contributing purification after a misfortune (Hill & Lynn Jr., 2016). Discussing the rules and procedures can help employees at the department to perform their task
Since there has not been a train derailment in the city of Oxnard before, first responders and partnering agencies were facing an unfamiliar incident. In the hours post-collision a number of major tasks were achieved. The Oxnard Fire Department (OFD) responded and the Battalion Chief assumed Incident Command (IC), he immediately declared a level 3 Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) and set up a unified command structure, requesting numerous additional resources (National Transportation, 2016c, p. 10). In accordance with the Ventura County Emergency Medical Services (VCEMS) MCI plan “A medical communications officer (MEDCOMM) was assigned at the scene and base hospital contact was initiated with Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC)” (Ventura County,
Dion spoke with CoMB Fire Department: Joe with Fire Department mentioned that the Fire pump shouldn't be tested at the roof and needs a test header at the pump.
A new national holiday I would like to honor is National Firefighter day. A national holiday is usually a day off of school and-or work. We take these days off to honor their accomplishments and impacts on society! Firefighters have been around for God knows how long and have put out more fires than you can count!!
“Kill it!” Luke exclaimed “Aim for the head!” Cody screamed.“Well I’ve never shot a gun before!” I screamed as we ran as fast as we could. “Are there anymore shots?” They all asked. “Why do you think I threw it at it!?” I shrieked. Everyone here was screaming and panicking. Nobody knew what was going on.
After the tragic loss of his cousin and a childhood friend, Denis Leary set out to establish a foundation to ensure firefighters across this country had the resources needed to carry out their assigned duties. The foundation was established to benefit those who protected the citizens of the country along with their families when needed. Within the foundation, you can see the values of Leary and how meaningful the cause is to him along with the leadership integrity he brings to it. Not only does establishing a foundation benefit those it is intended to serve, but it also enhances the image of the founder being it. Lastly, possessing integrity and managing an image are compatible based on the individual.
Fire safety is everybody’s concern. Poor fire safety practices and improper planning for fire emergency can consequently lead to critical situations. This is more threatening particularly for buildings which accommodate laboratories, chemical stores or server rooms. Observance and application of fire prevention principles can help to reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards. Moreover, much emphasis must be put on elaboration of a well designed emergency plan that defines the appropriate procedures to be followed in case of a fire. Implementation and practice of this plan through fire emergency drills is vital. The main focus of this study being importance of fire drills and setting up of an
The NFPA was established in 1896 with the primary goal of eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire-related hazards. To do this, the organization developed codes and standards along with training and educations to help firefighters perform skills and other objectives safely. Since the formation of the NFPA, 300 codes and standards have been created to reduce the risk and effects of fire by focusing on decisive factors for building, processing, design, service, and installation in the United States (NFPA, 2015). Although these standards can help reduce the number of injuries and deaths to firefighters, these codes and standards are not laws. Instead, the fire department or authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) must adopt the code and standard in order for it to be implemented into that fire organizations SOPs. Consequently, the fire services should analyze these codes and standards and determine which ones if not all, could further decrease the number of LODDs.
Candidate Maley's brief of the five paragraph order to his fire team covered all the main key points, but he had all three members face outboard (to provide security) which could have caused his brief to be ineffective and unclear. SNC did however display a good leadership trait after the brief by having the three team members repeat their individually assigned tasks prior to the start of the course. SNC did not brief an initial plan of execution which could have caused a friction point upon execution. Upon start of the problem, SNC was able to make a hasty adjustment to his original plan after the rope and a member of his team were penalized for touching a red area. SNC displayed effective and constant communication throughout the course.

I truly enjoyed reading the material for this week 's discussion. I found it fascinating to read how these people of passion were so revered as leaders. Something I found difficult while reading the stories of these various leaders was the details of what they did within their respective industries that made them successful. Although I recognize the importance of the details, I found myself continually fanaticizing about how the many different approaches would directly translate to the fire service. Because of the uniqueness of the fire service as an industry, I found it easier to relate to themes and concepts rather than the details. 'Strengths Based Leadership ' by Tom Rath and Barry Conchie For example Simon Cooper stated: "people create memories, not things. If we ask guests what color the carpet was in their guest room, they probably won 't know. The real value comes from the ladies and gentlemen (employees) who bring that hotel to life. Ten percent is the platform, but the rest is people. (Rath & Conchie, 2008, p. 43) As I read this I couldn 't help but think of the fact that our customers in the emergency response world (fire service) likely remember more about how we treat them than what uniform we wear or what kind of apparatus we arrive in, so long as we bring true caring and compassion to their bedside. In addition Cooper 's people over platform approach was obvious in this Rath & Conchie description: "then when he talked of the night-and-day difference that a
In order to evaluate common fire hazards within a building and the risks presented by these, it is essential to have an understanding of where fires start, and what causes them in varying occupancy types. The best process to fulfil this aim is to review existing statistical data. Existing data is a vital tool in analysing areas or functions of a building which have the greatest risk to occupants. In particular, those functions or areas of a building having higher fatality rates historically in buildings of a similar type should be treated with special consideration (i.e. Class 2, Kitchen). It is important to be familiar with these statistics as they play a key role in predicting outcomes of future fires. Using this knowledge, fire safety engineers can identify patterns and high risk factors; and apply appropriate building fire safety systems in an attempt to reduce fire
