Probation officers who are infrequently alluded to as group supervision officers, regulate individuals who have been set on post trial supervision rather than sent to jail. They work to guarantee that the probationer isn't a risk to the group and to help in their recovery through continuous visits with the probationer. For those who work in the federal probation system, there are many skills needed. The knowledge used by these individuals and the abilities they can offer to their field are vital if they are going to be successful in what they do and in caring for offenders who are on probation and need to be monitored closely but also treated with respect and decency. Probation and supervision are not the only areas where these individuals are needed, however, because they can also work in pretrial services, corrections, counseling, and case management. The skills they use in one of those disciplines often transfer over to other disciplines, but not every individual is good at more than one area of work. The environment in which these workers operate is one of pressure and stress, and that environment is always changing. That makes it something worth focusing on and working for, and also shows just how dynamic the workers must be in order to remain calm in the face of stressful events and situations with which they must deal - often on a daily basis.

What interests me the most about being a juvenile probation officer is being able to go into court

The duties of a probation and parole officer are pretty universal nationwide and an officer must carry a high ethical standard in order to be successful at the job as well as values such as honesty, fairness, and consideration of others. Probation is an alternative that permits the offender to live among society with certain restrictions that are ordered by the courts. When prisons are overcrowded, an offender can be granted parole and they are given the opportunity to finish their sentence and live in society, with restrictions. Probation and parole officers both strive for the same goals: aid in rehabilitation, supervise, and protect the community as well

There are several steps to the criminal justice system, one of them is Probation; a program where the offender’s freedom is limited; usually they have a curfew, and have limits on the things they do. Probations Officers are a huge factor in getting the juvenile offender back on the right track following their sentence. One of the problems with probation is that rather than helping the offenders, sometimes it can hurt them. Some scholars argue that the officers do not take the juveniles, specifically females, seriously when it comes to referring them to receive mental health treatment. In contrast, other scholars argue that Probation Officers are the key to connecting the offenders with mental health care. I will begin by talking about how the gender of the juvenile contributes to the unjust treatment of juveniles on probation, then I will talk about probation officers as “the problem,” and lastly I will talk about a solution. I will conclude by stating my research question and making some contributions as to what can be done to build a stronger relationship between the offenders and the probation officers.

See last page (court hierarchy). As a Chief P.O. I have administrative responsibilities including personnel evaluations/discipline/work schedules. We have a total of 13 probation officers. I 'm also the liaison to all the Judges, if they have concerns about anything, they tell me and I address it. In addition to administrative responsibilities, I also am in charge of our drug testing lab and the Domestic Assault Response Team. I also am the P.O. for anyone on probation and in our drug court program (45 as of today) that I supervise and hold accountable.

Probation and Parole is apart of community policing that deals with ethics, integrity, values. This promotes and supports organization strategies to address the cause and reduce the fear of crime and social disorders through problem solving approaches and community partnership. Ethics is used when addressing moral conduct. Integrity is used when one if true to themselves and would not do anything dishonorable. Values are social principles that are being upheld.The main roles of an officer in the criminal justice field is to maintain order, crime prevention, public education, delivery of service and enforcement of laws. The officers work hand in hand with community groups and social service agencies to provide offenders and victims with the support and services they need. Probation Officers maintain partnerships with law enforcement and other justice agencies so the agencies can benefit from the expertise of each other and share information on criminal activity.

As described by Kelly Peterson juvenile probation officers work with high risk teens along with their peers, family, work, school and involved activities. People like Kelly do there best to try and keep juveniles out of the adult system and further criminal systems. Over the course of Kelly’s visit she talked about many things some main points being; Her caseload and how she manages it, the main kinds of cases she deals with, and the court experience of people in the juvenile system.

While trying to become a probation officer, there are education requirements that are needed to be considered for this career. Normally, only a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or psychology is required but to advance your career a master’s degree is needed.

A parole officer has a dual role and “is responsible for protecting the community" as well as helping the parolee "to reintegrate into the community" (CDCR's Division of Adult Parole Operations, n.d.). If an offender is ordered to supervision rather than prison- they would be under the supervision of a probation officer. Normally, a probation officer "performed both rehabilitative and law enforcement functions" (Nieto, 1996). According to the, "probation strives to protect the community through rehabilitation of the offender"(Nieto, 1996).

Can a Probation/Parole officer “P/P” be a law enforcement officer? Can a P/P be a social caseworker? The two careers have different outlooks on their paths, but yet, can they exists together in the same person to achieve the goal of lessening the recidivism rate in the criminal justice system. A P/P officer have to have a number of qualities in order to function in a dual-role relationship. By taking a personal stake in each parolee/probationer’s life while that person re-adjusts to his/her new found freedom.

Entering into any field of law enforcement in this day and age requires a much more advanced understanding of our legal system and constitutional privileges. With such an enormous amount of recent scrutiny on law enforcement personnel due to the vast amount of negative publicity that has begun to surface through the media, becoming a probation officer seems to have inherited a similar meaning to that of any type of law enforcement representative. Being an advocate for the innocent victims of often times, violent crimes, holds some level of reward. It also forces new and established officers of the courts to maintain professionalism and lawful duties. A career in probationary duties is a great substitute to serving as a sworn officer; still, it is not for everyone. Civilian or non-sworn positions flourish in most probation and parole agencies these days, especially with the higher demand for space needed in prisons and jails and an increase in statistical criminal activity. Looking at the major I have selected at ECPI, Criminal justice, has been my interest and I am looking forward to my future within my career as a probation officer specializing in the juvenile detention center as a Long term goal. As for a short term goal I strive to be a police officer. There are various jobs that fall into the criminal justice category mainly in law enforcement agencies.

As we know, probation and parole officers play a major role in shaping an offenders perception of reality as well as changing their behavior. The question that many will ask is “is the role of the PO that of a social worker or cop?” In my opinion, probation and parole officers have a huge weight on their shoulders due to the caseloads that they receive. Since the recent police brutality cases the mentality of an officer needs to change with the times. I believe that officers should lean more towards being a social worker/cop because they should be able to gain common ground with citizens while keeping their best interest and public safety at heart.
