Career Investigation There are many careers within the field of aviation. Today, I have decided to look into what it would be like to pursue a job as a commercial pilot and as a maintenance technician. The airlines that I chose to exam today are Envoy, and SkyWest. Envoy is a regional airline for American, while SkyWest is a regional connection for Delta. As benefits, Envoy employees get $22,100 as a signing bonus, receive travel privileges as members of American Airlines Group, participate in profit sharing, collect performance bonuses, obtain a 401(k) with matching, chose a healthcare plan, acquire sick and vacation days, and fast track to American Airlines. SkyWest benefits include a $7,500 signing bonus, travel privileges, a health plan, …show more content…
Envoy pilots make $37.90 per hour and SkyWest pilots earn $37.23 per hour. Within commercial aviation, the average starting salary is between $20,000 and $40,000 depending on the airline, the type of plane flown, and the pilot’s experience level.
Even though the benefits and salary seem great to a new hire, there are still some disadvantages that need to be considered. These disadvantages include spending little time at home, missing important events, sleeping in crash pads for layovers, un-regular sleeping patterns, always being jet-lagged, needing to be healthy all the time, and boredom in the cockpit on long trips.
With maintenance however, these disadvantages are not an issue. I chose to take a closer look at what it would be like to work for Dynamic Aviation and Textron. Dynamic Aviation offers health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, disability, a flexible spending account, a dependent care account, a health savings account, sick and vacation days, a 401(k), and employee assistance. Textron offers medical insurance (includes dental and vision), a flexible spending account, a 401(k) plan, life/accident insurance, disability plans, and sick and vacation days. An average maintenance technician at Textron earns around $63,000 per year or $30 per hour whereas an average maintenance technician at Dynamic earns $27,000 per year or $17.40 per
