I am Shayla Padgett and I am an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist/Job Preparedness Instructor at South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation. My interest in rehabilitation was accidental, and my own need for a Career Exploration Specialist will be obvious.
I attended Lander University to obtain a degree in Nursing. I wanted to help people! I soon discovered that being a nurse is a dirty job and I did not enjoy blood and guts. I wandered over to the Education Department and was an Elementary Education Major for a while. I wanted to help children! After taking the Praxis and student teaching for a few weeks, I developed a dislike for the classroom environment. My next thought was to major in Sociology. I liked the idea of having
5. The Callos Companies is an organization that is linked with various companies to provide a broad range of human resources to businesses.
Some of my interests include flying and gaming. Two of my aptitudes are computers and technical engineering. Two skills I have are figuring how things work and exploring things I have not done before. Some of the good qualities I have are being kind-hearted, patient and having a good sense of humor.
The career I chose to undertake as my profession is that of a mechanical engineer. Why do I want to become a mechanical engineer? Well, for starters, I would be able to design, build and possibly repair many various machines and other technologies that are complex. These technologies can range from being already in use on a global scale to new, futuristic designs that are highly technical. Also, this career includes being a sort of jack-of-all-trades, where I would possess knowledge in mathematics, physics, etc. Finally, this career offers me the chance to expand outside my immediate area since mechanical engineers are well desired around the globe as well.
There are so many choices and possibilities for success. You just have to be willing to work hard to accomplish your goals. As an early college student , I wanted to major in Early Childhood Education and changed my mind. Then I decided to pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management . After getting into business, I felt that my passion was still working with Children. Based on my indecisive educational direction , I decided to consult a counselor which was the best decision I made. She referred me to the (INTS) program and I was able to integrate all the classes I had completely from both Early Childhood and Business Management. I am now pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Integrative Studies with a focus in Leadership and Communication Disorder. I would like to continue at Georgia State University and receive my masters in Speech and Language Pathology. I will be given the chance to work with kids and also have the financial stability I need. Based on my vision , I think my life ten years from now will be very fulfilling. Loving and being passionate about your career always brings you joy and satisfaction
I love sociology because it is a field that is endless. Meaning, there are so many career paths one can go in with this degree and one is never limited to one career choice. I have friends that have a sociology degree that are working in the DFACS office that deal with human resources. My friend went to Albany State, and graduated with a sociology degree and does case work at a local DFACs office in town. She said it didn’t take long for her to find a job and plans on getting her master degree in a couple of months. One of my high school teachers had a master’s degree in sociology and before settling in with teaching she did different things like working in the advising and admissions office at her old college. Sociology, is the study of the
Through my research I have found multiple jobs that interest me, but there are two that stick out the most: Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist and Psychiatric Technician. Before researching, I had no idea about these jobs, but now I know good deal about them. After researching, I found out in what settings people in these positions work, how much they make on average annually, what their job entitles, what the education requirements are, what the growth rates for these occupations are. The jobs’ settings are very similar, but their salaries and duties are very different. I was able to find that if one just looks at the average, annual wage for each occupation, Psychiatric Technicians make about $28,000 while Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialists make about $34,000. The growth rate for Rehabilitation Counselors, in general, is faster than Psychiatric Technicians, but only by four percent. The overall tasks of each occupation, however, differ greatly from each other.
When I was young I wanted to become a teacher; however, that all changed throughout the years. What had motivated me to become a teacher was all the supplies they had like the whiteboards, the markers, and the construction paper. It seemed fun and interesting to me to have all the supplies. I no longer wish to become a teacher. As I grew older I realized that I wanted to do something that has me going to places, seeing new things, speaking with diverse individuals, and for that reason I chose to be involved in Real estate.
I developed an interest in sociology when I first moved to Santa Barbara and started taking my first college course in it. Being fascinated by the many humanitarian and cultural phenomenon the course introduced me to, I decided to take more classes on varying topics pertaining to sociology. I have always liked helping people and trying to understand the world, and the broadness of the subject is what initially drew me in. As I was able to study various groups of people and how everyone is directly or indirectly influenced by society, I started looking at the world differently. I felt as though I had never had the type of insight into my life or the lives of people around me and the new knowledge encouraged me to pursue a degree in the field.

There is no better time than externship to find out what you want to do or where you want to go. The most important part of finding an externship is finding a place where you will have an enlightening experience about what it is like to have a passion for food. It is the first time I will step into a professional kitchen with formal training in culinary arts. I aspire to spend my three months of externship at Restaurant Eve, where I know I will be challenged and leave knowledgeable about a passion for food and staying true to your roots.
My first goal after I graduate from Honokaa High School is to go to community college. I am planing on getting my AA in Counseling or Sociology or transferring into a four-year university to get my Bachelor’s degree. With a Sociology degree I would like to enter into Social Work or be a Career Counselor. With a Counseling degree I would like to pursue Marriage and Family Counselor or a career in Conflict Resolution. These degrees, while they are similar, fall into different aspects of helping out people. Counseling is mainly one-on-one and sometimes with a couple. Sociology is more about how groups of people function. I would like to get a degree in either of these subjects because they both can help me get a job helping people, which is
There was some technical difficulties Tuesday night, so I couldn’t make it to class. Sounds like you had some trouble too! This week we are wrapping up a unit with a unit exam, a writing assignment, and a quiz. The writing assignment is about our possible career choices, we must include four. This new unit is about career exploration, there are many, many careers to choose from. There is a career options worksheet in the dropbox and reading. The four careers we chose can be completely different or similar. There’s many sources we can utilize, websites are the best place for quick and good information. These careers are just suggestions, don’t dismiss them but don’t commit to them either. The best place to start is to brainstorm possible careers
The next major decision I have awaiting me is the choice of a major. I have previously declared biochemistry as a major, but have recently reopened my major on official transcripts. I am currently in enrolled Career Exploration which, in combination with Life Planning and Decision Making, has and will continue to provide me with insight on this upcoming decision. The goal of the career exploration course is to open up my awareness to other interests and major/career options yet explored, and then to funnel this new awareness back down to final decision. My results from the MBTI and CISS have inspired me to explore recreational therapy. I have realized that I value altruism and would like to incorporate that into my major. I also value adventure and would love to be able to travel and/or work outdoors alongside pristine environments. I plan to continue to expand my list of possible majors to about ten. I will then do some research into what types of careers can spawn off of that major. I want to be able to have a vision of what my life would be like ten years down the road if I choose any given major. My happiness as a value has increased in priority as of late since I learned that it takes so much effort to maintain and even more to regain. Because family is such an
Everyone needs to develop skills that will help them in the future. Working to better ourselves, we help better our chances of more enlightening careers. I believe I have developed a certain few of these skills. While working at Ciddici's a pizza place here in downtown I proved such skills.
When beginning my second semester at Whitworth I selected my major to be Sociology, on the track of Social Service and Community Action. I came to this decision after I had been at my first job about six months, in which I worked with people who would be described as in belonging to the mental health population, at the Carlyle Care Center. I was attracted to working with them because my sister was diagnosed with mental illness, and I genuinely enjoyed working with the people in this population and saw that they had needs that were not being met, so I wanted to pick a field of study that I would be able to do the most for them.
