Population in different countries in different areas have the environmental impact. The ecological footprint is the inverse of carrying capacity and represents the amount of land needed to support a given population. An example for ecological footprint is, the Dutch need a land area 15 times larger than that of the Netherlands to support their population.

Carbon emissions are changing the planet for the worse. Energy production (mostly coal) is producing a one third of the US 's global warming emissions. Renewable sources produce little to zero percent. The balance of coal and renewable energy in the U.S. needs to be evened out with renewable techniques. Statistics from the Union of Concerned Scientist’s “Benefits of Renewable Energy Use” show that most renewable resources emit less than one pound of CO2E/kWh. These have significantly less of a carbon footprint than coal, which emits 1.4 to 3.6 lbs. CO2E/kWh or natural gas, which emits .6 to 2 lbs. CO2E/kWh. Introduction In order to preserve Canada’s natural capital, it is imperative to improve Canada’s ecological footprint. A country’s ecological footprint consists of that country’s impact on their environment via their use of resources2. Canada has a small population which results in a much lower ecological footprint than countries with bigger populations¬6. Canada’s total ecological footprint is 224 global hectares (gha)6.

Last night’s plenary speaker, Tensie Whelan, former President of the Rainforest Alliance, discussed the issues of sustainability and the natural environment. Currently the Earth’s ecological footprint is 1.6 planets. Whelan and Rainforest Alliance have sought to transform land-use practices, business practices, and consumer behavior through their use of a frog seal on certified goods. The standards set by them have made social responsibility profitable by reaching out to millions of consumers through responsible businesses.

Recently, Carnegie Mellon University did a study on people’s ecological footprints during the Thanksgiving holiday. In their article titled “Thanksgiving dinner’s carbon footprint: A state-by-state comparison” published on ScienceDaily.com, the University discussed and compared the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our earth’s atmosphere during the Thanksgiving holiday.

On the demand side, the Ecological Footprint measures the ecological assets that a given population requires to produce the natural resources it consumes (including plant-based food and fiber products, livestock and fish products, timber and other forest products, space for urban infrastructure) and to absorb its waste, especially carbon emissions.

In order to reduce the ecological impact of Macquarie University’s Arts Department the ecological footprinting tool is used to highlight problem areas and provide clear information on usage. By using this footprinting tool and related academic literature seven potential strategies have been identified.

This essay reviews my personal carbon footprint and discusses ways to manage it and reduce some of the biggest areas of my resource consumption. The footprint calculator that I used required that I answer a series of questions about my consumption habits, and based on the answers I provided, showed the impact of my lifestyle on the planet.
