Questioning reality is something that has been seen many a time from philosophy but recently films such as "Inception" and "The Matrix" introducing false or alternate realities prompting the audience to question reality. In fact, in 2011 a film named Source Code has intrigued philosophical questioning due to its premise. "Source Code" is a film in which a U.S. pilot, named Captain Stevens, is tasked to enter the memories of another person named Sean Fentress via the source code program in order to discover a bomb and learn who set it in order to prevent this individual from killing more civilians. Throughout the film, Stevens discovers the memories he is entering are those of a victim of the bomb he is currently trying to find and that he himself is dead, with his brain frozen so it can enter the source code program when necessary. Now why this film is so fascinating is that near the end of the films Stevens' actions within the victim's memories seem to change the real …show more content…
Reality A is where the initial explosion took place and the possible second explosion will take place, in addition to this, it is later revealed a frozen Captain Stevens is hooked up to the source code program. The second reality (later to be referred to as reality B) in the film is the source code reality which Captain Stevens resides in, this reality can change from the memories of Sean Fentress to a being inside a capsule which Stevens subconsciously creates. Now the last reality (Which will be identified as reality C) is the reality which is where the first bomb was averted due to Stevens' actions while inside the source code. It is also important to note that in Reality C Stevens' body is still frozen waiting to be placed into the source code but with all that said the question concerning which reality is the true reality in the film "Source
It’s Your Ship, by Capt. D. Michael Abrashoff is good read on understanding the basics of what he calls grassroots leadership he developed while a Commander in the Navy. He takes the reader through the journey of having a cutting-edge ship handed over him, while finding his own leadership lacking his expectations. While defying conventional Navy leadership tactics, Abrashoff created “a crew of confident and inspired problem-solvers eager to take the initiative and responsibility for their actions.” He ultimately succeeded in turning the USS Benfold into the “best damn ship in the Navy” in a
In the review of the case of Sam Stevens concerning the agreement to deliver 1,000 units of a dog barking machine, an evaluation will be made to determine if a valid contract was created and if a quasi-contract or a promissory estoppel was formed. Also, Sam has received an eviction notice from his apartment due to noise complaints, and for running an illegal business. Therefore, the rights and obligations under the lease agreement will be evaluated to determine if Quinn had grounds and defense against the eviction.
On November 10th, 1775, the Continental Congress passed a resolution that stated "two Battalions of Marines be raised", which established the Continental Marines, and is now considered the birth date of the Marines. The newly formed Continental Marines served on both land and sea, and took part in many major engagements, which helped establish them as an important branch of the Armed Forces. The first Commandant of the Continental Marines was Captain Samuel Nicholas, who was born in Philadelphia in 1744. He was commissioned to be a “Captain of Marines” by the 2nd Continental Congress on November 5th 1775. Nicholas soon established Tun Tavern as the recruiting headquarters. Tun Tavern’s owner, Robert Mullen, was so successful at recruiting
On the east side of Massachusetts, there lies a city that has been around for almost four hundred years, Boston. Boston is one of the most famous cities in the world. In 1999, Larry and Andy Wachowski directed The Matrix, a movie featuring the future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality or cyberspace called "the Matrix”. This fake reality was created by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population. To some, this movie represents just another brilliant Hollywood sci-fi action film, but for others, it challenges the understanding of perspective, reality and appearance ("The matrix 101," 2003). The Matrix heavily relies on the concepts of Irish Philosopher George Berkeley who believed reality, or reality as humans perceive it, is fundamentally mental and therefore immaterial which is known as Idealism.
In the movie The Source Code, the main character Capt. Colter Stevens is shown in three settings: in a life support pod at Nellis Air Force Base, in a cockpit capsule in an unknown location, and on a train outside of Chicago. While all three of these settings appear real at first, we are shown that some of them are only illusions. There are similarities to these realties and parts of Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy. The cockpit capsule is basically a dream world, an ever-changing but familiar construct that Capt. Stevens’ mind is producing to interact with the people in the real world. Like Descartes’ evil demon, Dr. Rutledge’s Source Code project creates an eight minute long snippet of virtual reality that, from Capt. Stevens’s point of view, is indistinguishable from real life. Although Capt. Stevens never perceives it, we are shown that Capt. Colter Stevens is a man, on the verge of death, ensconced in a high-tech life-support pod.
Crude oil is one of the world’s most valuable resources it is a multi-billion-dollar industry, has caused more problems ,each day we use this energy source. Causing severe damage to our surrounding environment. Gray harbor the largest city in Aberdeen, is being targeted by oil companies wanting to build Three New Oil-By-Rail terminals in this fishing industry part of Washington causing more traffic land and sea. Grays harbor offers great selection of fish both fresh and saltwater, the ecosystem within grays harbor is outstanding. By building new terminals in this location, it will not only damage the Grays Harbor's environment but also its economy. Washington government should not allow developers to build three new Oil-By-Rail Terminals in Grays harbor because it will impact the fishing industry.
Neuromancer came up with a novel approach towards science fiction, and was instrumental in spawning multiple movies of similar genre. One of such movie is “The Matrix”. The reason I chose this movie for the review is the very concept of stimulated reality in this movie being quite analogous to the one slowly budding towards the end in the Neuromancer.
In The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allen Poe, Montressor is able to successfully manipulate Fortunato 's arrogance and pride and use it against him as revenge. Montressor knows that Fortunato has a love for wine. Montressor tells Fortunato that he may have acquired Amontillado, a very nice wine. Montressor is not quite sure if the wine is Amontillado, but since Fotunato appears to be occupied Montressor says he will ask Luchesi instead. Fortunato believes his taste for wine is far superior than Luchesi 's, thus does not pass up the opportunity. Another way Montressor successfully manipulates Fortunato 's arrogance and pride against him is when Montressor brings up Fortunato 's health. Fortunato has a bad cough and Montressor believes the catacombs are making it worse. Montressor says they can leave the catacombs and he will have Luchesi taste the wine instead. Again, since Fotunato believes his taste for wine is superior to Luchesi 's, he does not pass up the opportunity. This arrogance and pride later results in Fortunato 's death.
The city of New Haven, Connecticut has been a long-standing settlement. Established officially by Europeans in March of 1638 (Source 3), New Haven has a detailed history of population declines and growth. The territory that is now New Haven was once inhabited by the Native American group the Quinnipiack (Source 6). The accrual of land was easy for the English settlers in this territory due to the conflicts between the Native American groups. The Quinnipiack tribe occupied the area near the harbor and the Mohawks and Pequots occupied the surrounding area and constantly harassed the Quinnipiack. When the English arrived the Quinnipiack traded their land for protection, which the English agreed to immediately. Through the years the settlement of New Haven has grown and declined in population due to different factors including political, economic and many more.
Millions of people flock to the movie theater year after year on a quest to be entertained. Even a mediocre movie has the ability to take the audience to another place, escaping the realities of their own life, even if for just a few short hours. Some movies are simply pure entertainment. And then, there are those movies that provoke conversation long after the film has been viewed. Despite the popularity of the recent films The Hunger Games and Divergence, the dystopian theme in film is not a new one. The Matrix shows a society where humans exist without any freedom. The film, not only entertaining but thought provoking as well, paints a world with two different dimensions, a world very much like today’s when the film is closely examined. The Matrix questions the benefit of technology and influence over society.
In a story, things are often not quite what they seem to be. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and Michaelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up are good examples of stories that are not what they first appear to be. Through the medium of film, these stories unfold in different and exiting ways that give us interesting arguments on the nature of truth and reality.
Inception, a science-fiction thriller, was directed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2010. The film’s protagonist, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, works for various corporations, stealing information from the subconscious of each of his subjects. He is tasked with planting an idea into the mind of an heir to a business empire, a process known as inception. Nolan’s use of cinematic techniques fully engages the viewer and leaves the audience speculating about the film’s conclusion. In this essay, I will analyze the various film techniques used throughout the film to portray the separation of order and chaos, the perception of time, and the idea that absolutely nothing is certain.
From the beginning of the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, the audience comes to a realization that the pigs will become the leading power. This book takes place on Manor Farm where the animals kickstart the revolution with a rebellion against Mr. Jones. Napoleon pushes his way up to dictatorship where, while he rules, many lives are lost and in the end human and pig are indistinguishable. The animals obtain the idea of rebellion after the long night of starvation which is endorsed by the wise and all-powering Old Major who is, a pig. Throughout the novel, the animals’ actions are determined by the pigs. They then support the idea that it is best for them to have the power by referring to what could happen if they did not lead the party of
The Matrix, written and directed by Lary and Andy Wachowski, is a 1999 science-fiction action film that has been regarded as one of the most igneous and highly imaginative films of all time. It depicts the complex story of a dystopian future in which the reality perceived by most human beings is actually a simulated one created by AI machines who use the suppressed humans as energy sources. Though the main characters of the story have freed themselves from the matrix, one character named Cypher (a.k.a. Mr. Reagan) regrets learning the truth and wants to return back to the dream world. Cypher is an example of antagonist Agent Smith's belief that "as a species, human beings define their reality through misery and suffering" as he believes
