Capstone Project Reflection
For my capstone project I worked with Katie and Emma. Our goal was to make a contraption to help a dog from the Humane Society named Ceiley. Ceiley is a puppy that is going to have some, or all, of its front legs amputated in the future. We decided to first make a walker in which the dog could use if she ended up using a prosthetic leg. The walker was not made for everyday use. It’s purpose is only to teach Ceiley how to walk on her own using a prosthetic. The walker had a frame made of pvc pipe and we used office chair wheels so that the walker could move in all directions. Furthermore, there is a padded fabric piece that runs across the frame and is attached with velcro. The velcro allows the walker to be adjustable

It is very difficult to produce a product for a dog that is still growing. We conquered this issue by making every component of the designs adjustable. For the wheelchair we were able to do this by making each length two pieces of pipe. The pieces of pipe have multiple holes cut on one end and they are attached in the middle by a wood black and two screws. For instance, to make the wheelchair longer you would place the screw through the holes closest to the outside of the pipe. To make the wheelchair shorter the screws would be placed on the screws on the pipes towards the middle of the pipes. Our first unexpected difficulty we faced during our capstone project was with the wheels of the walker. We didn’t really know what to expect with the wheels once we got them off of the office chair so we had to brainstorm ways to attach them after we already acquired them. This was probably the easiest problem to overcome during this project. Later, we faced a problem making the wheelchair because we couldn’t figure out how to connect the harness to the copper frame. We overcame this problem by taking some of the extra rubber tubing we had and connecting that to the harness through a metal ring and attaching it to the frame by putting a screw through it. Similarly, we had difficulty figuring out the best way to out the pieces of the frame together. We decided to buy a SharkBite T to …show more content…
Moreover, I think the goal of the project was to make us really apply ourselves. There was no easy way out of this project and you really had to commit to what you were doing. If you changed your project part of the way through it would make it very hard to finish on time. Overall, I am very happy with how this project went. Our group was quite on task and we were able to be very productive most days. We had very little free time or times when there was just nothing else we could do that day, though those times did occur. I am very proud of how the wheelchair turned out. If Ceiley does end up with a prosthetic I think our walker will actually be a useful tool in her rehabilitation. On the other hand, I am not as proud of the wheelchair. It didn’t turn out the way I was hoping it to. The problem with the SharkBite Ts caused us to use a less than professional supply, duct tape. Even with the use of duct tape I am not sure how practical the wheelchair is for use by Ceiley. That aside, I really enjoyed this project. It is impressive what students our age can create when we our given the time and a little

My invention is a wheelchair that has a bag attached to it. When you push the button that is on the armrest, the bag automatically goes from the back of the wheelchair to the front of the wheelchair onto the person’s lap. This is helpful because if you were in a wheelchair and you needed something from your bag instead of carrying your bag on your lap you could just push a button and the bag comes to your lap. I think this would especially help Chava Willig Levy who gets around in a electric wheelchair. If her bag was able to be in the back of her wheelchair and only on her lap when she needed it Mrs.Levy would me much more comfortable. Mrs.Levy had to get around by herself, and with this invention she could make everyday tasks, like going
First was to use public transportation. My partner and I chose to ride the bus to catch a glimpse of what using a wheelchair in the bus would mean. I was the assistant in this case. At first I thought it would be an easy time working as an assistant. I expected to be given priority and special treatment as I had a ‘person on the wheelchair’ with me; but no. Boarding the bus was a bit difficult since the bus did not have enough space to accommodate the wheelchair. We needed help to get in as the floor of the bus was higher than the ground we stood on. In the bus, the wheelchair had to be folded while in the bus since the space to put it was limited.
• Client will transfer from the bed to bathroom with minimal assist and 2 or less verbal cue for safety awareness by D/C. • Client A will use a Reacher to don and doff putting pants on with minimal assist with minimal trunk support. • Client will be able to identify and demonstrate three ways to cope with depression by D/C. • Client will perform UE stretching routine independently daily by D/C The activities that would benefit client A is balancing in parallel bars and wheelchair push-ups. The wheelchair pushes up activity is for the strengthen of the triceps and shoulder blade muscles to help client transfer from his wheelchair to his bed. The client places their hands-on top of their chair wheels, lean forward at their hips, press down through their palms and straighten their elbows, pushing their shoulder blades down at the same time and try to lift to lift their backside from their chair seat.
Currently, if not using her wheelchair, Lucia requires physical therapy and support for sitting on the floor or at desk or table. Sometimes a teacher aide will sit by her to support her. I would like to request that Lucia is provided with a sitting device that will allow her to participate in activities with comfort and increase independence (minimal support). Through my research, i have found a siting device for children with physical challenges called Rifton Activity Chair(2017). The Rifton Activity Chair(2017) is created by Rifton Equipment and is perfect for feeding, speech therapy, and active learning. According to Rifton (2017) the chair has two chair base
Man Takes First Steps On The Moon.Winning the race to the Moon gave people pride in being an american, being the first country to have someone on the moon. It gave US citizens pride knowing they beaten the soviet union in the end. This event had a large impact on United States Citizens as they thought it was impossible to get to the moon, of course with great things comes many conspiracies, like how some people think the moon landing is fake, or people that still think the moon is flat.
Paraplegics of the public are continuously facing barriers of getting about their local area and region. For that reason the Sunshine Coast Regional Council needs to constantly make modifications to cater for their accessibility and freedom of movement. Equipment and specialized items that need to be essential in the community for paraplegics include:
Mobility aids- such as braces, canes, walkers, and wheelchairs provide support and also help maintain mobility.
In the video they follow a man who has a spinal cord injury and how he gets around in the community now that he is wheelchair. The man discus how things are different for him now that he is in the wheelchair. Now when he goes out with friends he needs to know if the places a wheelchair assessable, do they have ramps, and where the bathrooms are located. He knows when he goes out he have to consider the fact many people will just look over him. When shopping for clothes he don’t fit into most dressing rooms. He also points out that taking public transportation is easier for people in wheelchairs now that buses have ramps. Seeing this video made me consider more things people in wheelchairs deal with. Seeing how he is able to get himself in and
April: Each day we see Harrison becoming more confident with cruising the furniture and moving around the environment independently and over the past few weeks Harrison has been pulling himself to a standing position and hold on to objects for support. To support Harrison in the transition to walking we have been providing the low bridge and Harrison uses the rail to support himself as he squats up and down. Harrison has used the climbing equipment for support along with our wooden walker and toy lawn mower.
Afflicted by left-side Hemiplegia and bound to a wheelchair, my grandmother’s life was not one of ease. By the time I was born she had been living with her barriers for thirty years and had learned to compensate due to her astounding will and surrounding subpar medical practices. As a child I thought nothing of the fact that my grandmother was stricken with paralysis until I witnessed her take a turn for the worse and suffer another hemorrhagic stroke. Her recovery was long and arduous yet, it was a blessing that brought us closer together and nudged me down the path of Occupational Therapy.
For my Capstone project topic, I chose community design. Specifically, I desire to create a community plan for the Blackman community with an emphasis on making it healthier and then present it to . I chose this topic due to my lifelong love of active community design. When I was younger, I would draw up different communities where me and my friends could live, work, and play. Naturally, this early pastime became my life purpose. I have always loved active, walkable communities. Not only that, I have also cared about staying healthy for many years. During my middle school days, I was very unhealthy. I still remember being made fun of for my weight and now I don’t want anyone to have to deal with that. In doing this project, I will gain experience in the field, I will learn what makes a healthy community, and I will leave a lasting influence on the Blackman area.
This project opened my eyes to the struggle that people go through every day. It was very difficult for me not to use my left arm, and I cannot imagine having to not use it forever. I have respect for people with disabilities, and it is amazing that they can overcome their disability. I am happy that I did this project because I learned more about the struggle that my friend goes through as well as what many people go through every
It was recommended for Ethan to receive a new Group 4 power standing wheelchair due to the fact that he is now a college student and is required to be more independent than he had been since his injury. The standing feature of his power wheelchair would allow him the physiological benefit of standing and avoid skin breakdown as well as the other know complications and risk of immobility that Ethan stated in his own
Electric Wheelchairs being one of the most commonly used piece of equipment. Electric wheelchairs help millions of people across the world that are unable to walk on their own. These chairs help people with Cerebral Palsy by allowing them to control the chair by just using finger tips to move the chair in whatever direction, or speed they want to go. Other equipment involves voice sensors that connect to the chair and can steer any direction the person wants to go. Voice sensors can help in many different ways, they can be used on the computer for someone who uses one regularly, they can just say what needs to be typed if they do not have the
